1 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Σωπάστε μπρος μου εσείς, κάτοικοι των μακρινών χωρών κι ας ξαναβρούνε οι λαοί το σθένος τους. Ας πλησιάσουν κι ας παρουσιάσουν την υπόθεσή τους· ας συναχθούμε όλοι μαζί, να δούμε ποιος έχει δίκιο.

2 »Ποιος έφερε απ’ την ανατολή εκείνον,*εκείνον. Εδώ ο προφήτης φαίνεται να υποδηλώνει, αλλά χωρίς ακόμη να τον κατονομάζει, το βασιλιά Κύρο των Περσών, ο οποίος κατέλαβε αιφνιδιαστικά το ανατολικό τείχος και κυρίεψε τη Βαβυλώνα το 539 π.Χ. (βλ. κεφ. 41:25· 44:28· 45:1 κλπ.) που η νίκη τον ακολουθεί όπου διαβαίνει; Ποιος του παρέδωσε τα έθνη και τον ανέδειξε των βασιλιάδων κυρίαρχο; Το ξίφος του τους σύντριψε σαν να ’ταν σκόνη· τα βέλη του τους σκόρπισαν σαν άχυρα στον άνεμο. 3 Τους καταδίωξε κι ανέπαφος προχώρησε με βιάση, λες και στα πόδια του φυτρώσανε φτερά.

4 »Ποιος τα σχεδίασε όλα τα παραπάνω και τα πραγματοποίησε; Κείνος που πλάθει τις γενιές απ’ την αρχή· εγώ, ο Κύριος, που ήμουν παρών απ’ την αρχή και θα ’μαι ως το τέλος».

5 Οι μακρινές οι χώρες είδαν αυτό που έγινε και τρόμαξαν, ταράχτηκαν τα πέρατα της γης· όλοι μαζί πλησίασαν και ήρθαν. 6 Ο ένας τον άλλο βοηθά και λέει: «Κάνε κουράγιο!» 7 Έτσι εμψυχώνει το χρυσοχόο ο ξυλουργός κι ο χαλκοπλάστης λέει σ’ αυτόν όπου σφυρηλατεί στο αμόνι: «Είναι καλή η συγκόλληση». Και με καρφιά το είδωλο στεριώνει, ακλόνητο να στέκει.

8 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Εσένα, όμως, δούλε μου Ισραήλ, Ιακώβ, εκλεκτέ μου, απόγονε του Αβραάμ, του φίλου μου, 9 εγώ απ’ τις άκρες σ’ έφερα της γης, σε κάλεσα απ’ τα πέρατά της, και σου είπα: "δούλος μου είσαι". Εγώ σε διάλεξα και δε σε περιφρόνησα. 10 Εγώ είμαι μαζί σου, μη φοβάσαι. Εγώ είμαι ο Θεός σου, μην τρομάζεις. Θα σ’ ενισχύσω, θα σε βοηθήσω, θα σε στηρίξω με το δίκαιο χέρι μου, το δυνατό. 11 Θα ντραπούν και θα γίνουν καταγέλαστοι όλοι όσοι είναι εναντίον σου οργισμένοι, θα εκλείψουν και θ’ αφανιστούν όσοι μ’ εσένα αντιδικούν. 12 Θ’ αναζητήσεις εκείνους που σε μάχονται, αλλά δε θα τους βρεις. Θα εκλείψουνε και θα χαθούν όσοι σε πολεμούνε. 13 Γιατί εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος ο Θεός σου, που απ’ το δεξί σου χέρι σε κρατώ, και που σου λέω: Μη φοβάσαι, έρχομαι να σε βοηθήσω εγώ.

14 »Λοιπόν, μην τρέμεις, Ιακώβ, φτωχέ λαέ Ισραήλ! Εγώ θα σε βοηθήσω, έστω κι αν είσαι ανίσχυρος σαν σκούληκας που τον πατούν. Εγώ, ο Κύριος, ο Άγιος Θεός του Ισραήλ, εγώ είμ’ ο λυτρωτής σου. 15 Άμαξα θα σε κάνω αλωνιστική, καινούρια και με κοφτερά τα δόντια· και θ’ αλωνίσεις τα βουνά και θα τα κάνεις σκόνη, τους λόφους θα τους κάνεις σαν άχυρο λεπτό. 16 Θα τα λιχνίσεις και θα τα σηκώσει ο άνεμος, ο ανεμοστρόβιλος θα τα διασκορπίσει. Τότε εσύ για τον Κύριο θα χαίρεσαι, θα δοξαστείς για τον Άγιο Θεό του Ισραήλ.

17 »Όταν οι αδύνατοι, οι φτωχοί, θα γυρεύουν νερό κι εκείνο δε θα υπάρχει κι η γλώσσα τους από τη δίψα θα ξεραίνεται, εγώ ο Κύριος θα τους εισακούσω· δεν πρόκειται να τους εγκαταλείψω, εγώ ο Θεός του Ισραήλ. 18 Απάνω στα γυμνά βουνά θα κάνω να κυλούν ποτάμια και μέσα στα φαράγγια ν’ αναβρύσουνε πηγές· θα κάνω η έρημος να γίνει λίμνη, η γη η άνυδρη τρεχούμενα νερά. 19 Την έρημο με κέδρους θα φυτέψω, με ακακίες, με μυρτιές κι ελιές· στη στέπα θα φυτέψω κυπαρίσσια, πεύκα και πλάτανους μαζί. 20 Έτσι όλοι θα δουν και θα γνωρίσουν, θα σκεφτούν κι όλοι θα καταλάβουν πως του Κυρίου το χέρι τα ’κανε όλα αυτά, πως ο Άγιος Θεός του Ισραήλ τα δημιούργησε».

21 Ο Κύριος, ο βασιλιάς του Ισραήλ, λέει στους θεούς των εθνών: «Παρουσιάστε την υπόθεση, προβάλετε τα επιχειρήματά σας. 22 Πλησιάστε να μας αναγγείλετε τι θα συμβεί· εξηγήστε μας τα όσα έγιναν*Πιθανότατη αναφορά στην προέλαση του βασιλιά Κύρου (βλ. υποσ. εις στ. 2). και πέστε μας τη σημασία τους ή ανακοινώστε μας τα μέλλοντα, για να παρατηρήσουμε την εξέλιξή τους. 23 Πέστε μας τι είναι να συμβεί στο μέλλον, ώστε ν’ αναγνωρίσουμε ότι είστε αληθινοί θεοί. Κάντε να ’ρθεί κάποιο καλό ή μια δυστυχία, για να γεμίσουμε τρόμο και θαυμασμό. 24 Αλλά εσείς είστε μηδέν κι είναι ένα τίποτα το έργο σας· είναι αποκρουστικό να σας διαλέγει κάποιος για θεούς του.

25 »Όμως εγώ ξεσήκωσα κάποιον απ’ το βορρά και θα ’ρθει απ’ την ανατολή του ήλιου· με τ’ όνομά του τον καλώ.*με τ’ όνομά του τον καλώ, το πιθανό κείμενο, που υποστηρίζεται κι από το χειρ. του Κουμράν. Το παραδοσιακό εβρ. έχει: «αυτός καλεί το όνομά μου». Τους ηγεμόνες θα τους πατήσει σαν το χώμα, όπως ο κεραμοποιός πατάει τον πηλό. 26 Ποιος από σας τα ανάγγειλε όλα αυτά από την αρχή, ώστε να τον αναγνωρίσουμε, κι από τα περασμένα χρόνια, ώστε να πούμε «Έχει δίκιο;» Όχι, κανένας δεν τα ανήγγειλε, κανένας δεν τα διακήρυξε, ούτ’ άκουσε τα λόγια σας κανένας. 27 Πρώτος εγώ τα ανήγγειλα στη Σιών κι έστειλα στην Ιερουσαλήμ αγγελιοφόρο με τις ειδήσεις τις καλές.

28 »Κοίταξα, μα κανένας δεν υπήρχε ανάμεσά τους σύμβουλος, να τον ρωτήσω και να μου απαντήσει. 29 Όλοι τους είναι ένα μηδέν,*ένα μηδέν. Σύμφωνα με ορισμένες παλαιές μετ. και το χειρ. του Κουμράν. Το παραδοσιακό εβρ. έχει «ανομία». τα έργα τους είν’ ένα τίποτα· τα είδωλά τους άνεμος και ματαιότητα».

21 Produce your cause, saith the LORD; bring forth your strong reasons, saith the King of Jacob.*41.21 Produce: Heb.
