1 Ακούστε απόγονοι του Ιακώβ, εσείς που φέρνετε το τιμητικό όνομα του Ισραήλ και που είστε απόγονοι του Ιούδα! Στου Κυρίου τ’ όνομα ορκίζεστε κι επικαλείστε το Θεό του Ισραήλ, μα όχι με ειλικρίνεια και πιστότητα. 2 Ωστόσο με καμάρι ονομάζεστε πολίτες της άγιας πόλης, και λέτε πως στηρίζεστε στο Θεό του Ισραήλ, που τ’ όνομά του είναι «ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος». Ακούστε τι έχει να σας πει:

3 «Τα παλιότερα γεγονότα τα είχα αναγγείλει από πολύ πριν· τα είπα, τα έκανα γνωστά· και ξάφνου τα πραγματοποίησα. 4 Επειδή ήξερα πόσο είσαι σκληρός, πως σαν ραβδί από σίδερο είναι ο τράχηλός σου και χάλκινο το μέτωπο, 5 γι’ αυτό σου ανάγγειλα τα γεγονότα από παλιά, πριν να συμβούν σου τα γνωστοποίησα, ώστε να μην μπορείς να πεις, "το είδωλό μου το έκανε αυτό, το άγαλμά μου, η χωνευτή μου εικόνα τα διέταξε". 6 Τα ’χεις ακούσει όλ’ αυτά και τώρα τα είδες πραγματοποιημένα· δεν το παραδέχεσαι;

»Τώρα σου αναγγέλλω νέα πράγματα, που τα ’χα φυλαγμένα, και ποτέ πριν δεν άκουσες γι’ αυτά. 7 Τώρα μόνο τα πραγματοποιώ, τίποτα απ’ αυτά δεν έγινε παλιότερα· πριν απ’ αυτή τη μέρα ποτέ δεν άκουσες γι’ αυτά και έτσι δεν μπορείς να πεις ότι τα γνώριζες. 8 Και βέβαια και δεν τ’ άκουσες ούτε κι έλαβες γνώση· και βέβαια τ’ αυτιά σου ήταν κλειστά από πολύ πιο πριν, γιατί ξέρω πως είσαι αναξιόπιστος και πως σ’ αποκαλούνε παραβάτη από γεννησιμιού σου. 9 Επειδή θέλω να τιμάται το όνομά μου, θα συγκρατήσω το θυμό μου· για χάρη της δόξας μου θα τον δαμάσω, για να μη σ’ εξολοθρεύσω. 10 Εγώ σε λαμπικάρισα, μα όχι στη φωτιά καθώς το ασήμι· στης θλίψης το καμίνι σε δοκίμασα. 11 Για τη δική μου χάρη, μόνο γι’ αυτήν έπραξα ό,τι έπραξα, γιατί αλλιώς θ’ ατιμαζόταν τ’ όνομά μου. Τη δόξα μου δεν θα τη δώσω σε άλλον».

12 «Άκουσέ με, Ιακώβ, Ισραήλ, που σε κάλεσα· εγώ είμαι ο ένας και μοναδικός Θεός· εγώ είμαι ο πρώτος κι ο τελευταίος. 13 Το χέρι μου θεμέλιωσε τη γη, τους ουρανούς τούς άπλωσε το δυνατό μου χέρι· τους φωνάζω, και στη στιγμή μπροστά μου παρουσιάζονται. 14 Συναχθείτε όλοι εσείς κι ακούστε! Αυτός που αγάπησα*Ακόμα μια νύξη για το βασιλιά Κύρο (βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 41:2). τα σχέδιά μου θα εκτελέσει ενάντια στη Βαβυλώνα, θα επιβάλει στους Βαβυλώνιους την εξουσία του. Ποιος άλλος εκτός από μένα τα ανάγγειλε όλα αυτά; 15 Εγώ, ναι, εγώ μίλησα και τον κάλεσα, τον καθοδήγησα και τον βοήθησα τα σχέδιά του να πετύχουν. 16 Πλησιάστε με κι ακούστε αυτό εδώ: απ’ την αρχή ποτέ κρυφά δε μίλησα· και από τότε που συνέβησαν αυτά τα γεγονότα, εγώ ήμουν εκεί».

Και τώρα ο Κύριος ο Θεός με απέστειλε με το Πνεύμα του.

17 Λέει ο Κύριος, ο λυτρωτής σας, ο Άγιος Θεός του Ισραήλ: «Εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, που σας διδάσκω ό,τι σας ωφελεί και σας οδηγώ στο δρόμο που πρέπει να βαδίζετε. 18 Αν προσέχατε τις εντολές μου, η ευτυχία σας θα σας πλημμύριζε σαν ποταμός και η ευημερία σας θα σας σκέπαζε καθώς τα κύματα της θάλασσας· 19 οι απόγονοί σας θα ήταν σαν την άμμο πολυάριθμοι, οι καρποί των σπλάχνων σας σαν τους κόκκους της πολλοί· τ’ όνομα του λαού σας από μπροστά μου δεν θα αφανιζόταν ποτέ».

20 Βγείτε απ’ τη Βαβυλώνα, φύγετε απ’ τη Χαλδαία! Αναγγείλτε τα νέα με φωνές χαράς και διακηρύξτε τα παντού· φέρτε τα ως τα πέρατα της γης, και πείτε: «Ο Κύριος λύτρωσε το δούλο του, τον Ισραήλ!» 21 Δε δίψασαν στην έρημο όπου τους οδηγούσε· νερό για χάρη τους από το βράχο έβγαλε, το βράχο έσκισε και τρέξαν τα νερά.

22 «Μα τέτοια ευτυχία δεν υπάρχει για τους ασεβείς», λέει ο Κύριος.

1 Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness. 2 For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; The LORD of hosts is his name. 3 I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I shewed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass. 4 Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass;*48.4 obstinate: Heb. hard 5 I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them. 6 Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them. 7 They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them. 8 Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb.

9 For my name’s sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off. 10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.*48.10 with…: or, for silver 11 For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another.

12 Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. 13 Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.*48.13 my…: or, the palm of my right hand hath spread out 14 All ye, assemble yourselves, and hear; which among them hath declared these things? The LORD hath loved him: he will do his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm shall be on the Chaldeans. 15 I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him: I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.

16 Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me. 17 Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go. 18 O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea: 19 Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me.

20 Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth; say ye, The LORD hath redeemed his servant Jacob. 21 And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts: he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them: he clave the rock also, and the waters gushed out. 22 There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked.
