1 Εξαγγελία για την «έρημο κοντά στη θάλασσα».*έρημο κοντά στη θάλασσα. Έκφραση αινιγματική. Ίσως πρόκειται για μετάφραση του ασσυριακού matt tamti (χώρα της θάλασσας), που χαρακτήριζε την νοτίως της Βαβυλώνος περιοχή της Μεσοποταμίας.

Όπως σαρώνουν οι ανεμοστρόβιλοι τη γη του νότου, έτσι θα έρθει ο εχθρός από την έρημο, από μια χώρα τρομερή. 2 Όραμα σκληρό μού φανερώθηκε: «Ο προδότης προδίδει, ο εξολοθρευτής εξολοθρεύει. Ανέβα Ελάμ κι εσύ Μηδία, πολιόρκησε! Θα δώσω τέλος σ’ όλους τους στεναγμούς των υποδουλωμένων».

3 Γι’ αυτό η μέση μου ολόκληρη υποφέρει, με ζώσαν πόνοι σαν τους πόνους της γυναίκας που γεννά. Ταράχτηκα απ’ αυτό που άκουσα, τρόμαξα απ’ αυτό που είδα. 4 Κλονίζεται η καρδιά μου, ο τρόμος με κυρίεψε· σούρουπο που το πρόσμενα έγινε φρίκη εντός μου.

5 Στη Βαβυλώνα βλέπω τραπέζι να ετοιμάζουν, να στρώνουν τα ταπέτα, να τρώνε και να πίνουν. Ξάφνου κραυγή ακούγεται: «Άρχοντες σηκωθείτε, ετοιμάστε τις ασπίδες σας!»

6 Ο Κύριος μου είπε να πάω να βάλω ένα σκοπό για ν’ αναγγέλλει ό,τι βλέπει. 7 Κι αν δει άντρες να έρχονται πάνω σε άμαξες πολεμικές με δύο άλογα ή καβάλα πάνω σε γαϊδούρια και καμήλες, να δώσει μεγάλη προσοχή.

8 Φώναξε τότε ο σκοπός: «Αφεντικό, στέκομαι στη σκοπιά μου όλη μέρα, παρατηρώ όλη τη νύχτα! 9 Πρόσεξε· έρχονται κατά ’δω στρατεύματα πάνω σε άμαξες πολεμικές με δύο άλογα». Πήρε πάλι το λόγο ο σκοπός και είπε: «Έπεσε, έπεσε η Βαβυλώνα και καταγής συντρίφτηκαν όλα τα είδωλα των θεών της».

10 Τυραννισμένε μου λαέ που σε αλωνίσανε! Αυτό που άκουσα από τον Κύριο του σύμπαντος, απ’ το Θεό του Ισραήλ, αυτό σου αναγγέλλω.

11 Εξαγγελία για τη Δουμά.*Δουμά. Όαση ανατολικά της ορεινής χώρας Σηείρ (Εδώμ).

Ακούω να φωνάζουν από τη Σηείρ: «Φρουρέ, πόσο η νύχτα θα κρατήσει; Πότε θα τελειώσει;» 12 «Έρχεται το ξημέρωμα», αποκρίνεται ο φρουρός, «αλλά είναι νύχτα ακόμα. Αν θέλετε να ξαναρωτήσετε, ελάτε πάλι».

13 Εξαγγελία για την Αραβία.

Μέσα στους θάμνους, στην έρημο της Αραβίας, θα διανυκτερεύετε εσείς, των Δαιδανιτών καραβάνια.

14 Βγείτε να συναντήσετε τους διψασμένους! Φέρτε τους νερό, φέρτε ψωμί για τους φυγάδες, εσείς που κατοικείτε στη Θαιμάν! 15 Φεύγουν για να γλιτώσουν απ’ το ξίφος, απ’ το ξεγυμνωμένο το σπαθί, από το τεντωμένο τόξο, από της μάχης την ορμή.

16 Και να τι μου είπ’ ο Κύριος: «Ύστερα από ένα χρόνο ακριβώς, όλη η δόξα του Κηδάρ θα έχει πάρει τέλος. 17 Και το υπόλοιπο απ’ τους γενναίους τοξότες, απογόνους του Κηδάρ θα είναι ελάχιστο. Εγώ ο Κύριος, ο Θεός του Ισραήλ το λέω».
