1 Αλίμονό σας, μεθυσμένοι του Εφραΐμ,*Εφραΐμ. Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 7:2. που το κρασί σάς καταδυναστεύει. Η πόλη σας είν’ όλο αλαζονεία καθώς δεσπόζει σαν λαμπρή κορώνα πάνω στην εύφορη κοιλάδα, καθώς στεφάνι όμορφο απάνω στο κεφάλι σας. Αλλά τα μαραμένα άνθη του θα πέσουν. 2 Γιατί ο Κύριος θα στείλει έναν αντίπαλο ισχυρό και δυνατό. Θα ’ρθει σαν θύελλα με χαλάζι, σαν καταιγίδα καταστροφική, σαν την πλημμύρα απ’ τ’ ουρανού τους καταρράχτες και με μια κίνηση του χεριού του θ’ αναποδογυρίσει τα πάντα στη γη. 3 Τότε θα ποδοπατηθεί το στέμμα της αλαζονείας των μεθυσμένων του Εφραΐμ. 4 Το μαραμένο άνθος της λαμπρής κορώνας του, που δεσπόζει πάνω στην εύφορη κοιλάδα, θα γίνει σαν το πρώιμο σύκο πριν το καλοκαίρι, που όποιος το δει το παίρνει μες στο χέρι του κι αμέσως το καταβροχθίζει.

5 Την ημέρα εκείνη ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, αυτός θα είναι η λαμπρή κορώνα και τ’ όμορφο διάδημα για όσους από το λαό του θα ’χουν επιζήσει. 6 Αυτός θα δώσει πνεύμα δικαιοσύνης σ’ εκείνους που συνεδριάζουν στο δικαστήριο, γενναιότητα σ’ εκείνους που υπερασπίζονται τις πύλες από τις επιθέσεις του εχθρού.

7 Αλλά και οι προφήτες κι οι ιερείς απ’ το κρασί τρικλίζουν και παραπαίουν απ’ τα μεθυστικά ποτά. Τους παρασάλεψε ο νους απ’ το κρασί, από τα δυνατά ποτά σκοντάφτουν, πλανιούνται στα οράματά τους κι είναι σε σύγχυση όταν εκδίδουν τις αποφάσεις τους. 8 Γεμάτα εμετούς είν’ όλα τα τραπέζια τους, τίποτε καθαρό δεν έχει μείνει.

9 Θυμώνουν εναντίον μου και λένε: «Σε ποιον θέλει αυτός να δώσει μάθημα; Σε βυζανιάρικα που μόλις αποκόπηκαν από της μάνας τους το στήθος; 10 Τι ασυναρτησίες είν’ αυτές που όλο μας λέει;»*Το εβρ. έχει επανάληψη λέξεων που δεν αποδίδουν νόημα και μοιάζουν με συλλαβισμούς μικρών παιδιών.

11 Ε! λοιπόν, ναι, με χείλη που ψελλίζουν και με μια γλώσσα ξένη θα μιλήσει στο λαό αυτόν ο Κύριος. 12 Ο ίδιος σας είχε πει: «Αυτή είναι η ανάπαυση που σας δίνω· εδώ ν’ αναπαυτείτε όσοι είστε κουρασμένοι· εδώ είναι η άνεση». Εσείς όμως δε θέλατε ν’ ακούσετε. 13 Έτσι ο λόγος του Θεού θα ’ναι για σας συνεχείς ασυναρτησίες, ώστε καθώς θα προχωρείτε, να σκοντάφτετε κι ανάποδα να πέφτετε, να τσακιστείτε, να παγιδευτείτε και να πιαστείτε αιχμάλωτοι.

14 Όλοι εσείς οι χλευαστές, που κυβερνάτε το λαό αυτόν της Ιερουσαλήμ, ακούστε τι λέει ο Κύριος: 15 Εσείς νομίζετε πως έχετε κάνει συνθήκη με το θάνατο και συμφωνία με τον άδη και πως η μάστιγα η καταστροφική όταν περάσει δε θα σας αγγίξει. Κάνατε την ψευτιά καταφύγιο και την απάτη κρυψώνα σας. 16 Αλλά ο Κύριος, ο Θεός, λέει: «Εγώ, θα βάλω στη Σιών ένα λιθάρι, λιθάρι στέρεο, πολύτιμο, ακρογωνιαίο, λιθάρι θεμέλιο γερό· όποιος πιστεύει σ’ εμένα δεν θ’ απογοητευτεί. 17 Το δίκαιο θα κάνω μέτρο και τη δικαιοσύνη στάθμη.

»Αλλά το δικό σας το απατηλό καταφύγιο απ’ το χαλάζι θα καταστραφεί και τα νερά θα πλημμυρίσουν το κρησφύγετό σας. 18 Η συνθήκη σας με το θάνατο θ’ ακυρωθεί· η συμφωνία σας με τον άδη δε θ’ αντέξει. Όταν περάσει η μάστιγα η καταστροφική, θα σας σαρώσει. 19 Κάθε φορά που θα περνάει, θα πέφτει απάνω σας. Θα περνάει κάθε πρωί, μέρα και νύχτα· ακόμα και το άκουσμά της θα ’ναι τρομακτικό. 20 Όπως το λέει κι η παροιμία: κοντό θα σου ’ρχεται το κρεβάτι για να ξαπλώσεις, στενό το πάπλωμα να σκεπαστείς». 21 Γιατί ο Κύριος θα εμφανιστεί όπως στο όρος Περασίμ, θα θυμώσει όπως στην κοιλάδα της Γαβαών· και θα πραγματοποιήσει το έργο του, έργο παράδοξο· θα εκτελέσει την πράξη του, πράξη μυστηριώδη. 22 Τώρα, λοιπόν, μη χλευάζετε, για να μη γίνουν σκληρότερα τα δεσμά σας· γιατί εγώ έχω ακούσει από τον Κύριο, το Θεό του σύμπαντος την απόφασή του να καταστρέψει όλη τη γη.

23 Ανοίξτε τ’ αυτιά σας κι ακούστε με, προσέξτε τι έχω να σας πω: 24 Τάχα κάθε μέρα οργώνει ο γεωργός για να σπείρει; κάθε μέρα αυλακώνει και σβαρνίζει το χωράφι του; 25 Όχι. Μόλις εξομαλύνει την επιφάνεια του χωραφιού, σπέρνει άνηθο και κύμινο, βάζει σιτάρι και κριθάρι και βρίζα, το καθένα στη θέση του. 26 Κι είν’ ο Θεός που τον μαθαίνει τι πρέπει να κάνει· αυτός τονε διδάσκει.

27 Δεν αλωνίζουν το άνηθο με αλωνιστικό εργαλείο, ούτε περνούν της άμαξας τη ρόδα πάνω στο κύμινο, αλλά χτυπούν το άνηθο και το κύμινο με ραβδί. 28 Δεν καταστρέφουν το στάρι αλωνίζοντάς το συνέχεια· ξεχωρίζουν το σπόρο απ’ το στάχυ, χωρίς ν’ αφήνουν τους τροχούς της άμαξας και τις οπλές των ζώων να λειώνουν τους σπόρους. 29 Κι αυτό επίσης προέρχεται από τον Κύριο του σύμπαντος. Θαυμαστό το σχέδιό του, μεγάλη η σοφία του!

1 Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!*28.1 overcome: Heb. broken 2 Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand. 3 The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:*28.3 under…: Heb. with feet 4 And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.*28.4 eateth: Heb. swalloweth

5 In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people, 6 And for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate.

7 But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. 8 For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.

9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.*28.9 doctrine: Heb. the hearing? 10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:*28.10 must be: or, hath been 11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.*28.11 stammering…: Heb. stammerings of lip*28.11 will…: or, he hath spoken 12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. 13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. 15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:

16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. 17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.*28.18 trodden…: Heb. a treading down to it 19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.*28.19 to…: or, when he shall make you to understand doctrine 20 For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it. 21 For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act. 22 Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.

23 Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech. 24 Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground? 25 When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place?*28.25 the principal…: or, the wheat in the principal place, and barley in the appointed place*28.25 rie: or, spelt*28.25 place: Heb. border? 26 For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.*28.26 For…: or, And he bindeth it in such sort as his God doth teach him 27 For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod. 28 Bread corn is bruised; because he will not ever be threshing it, nor break it with the wheel of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemen. 29 This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
