1 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Να ο δούλος μου που τον υποστηρίζω, ο εκλεκτός μου που έχει όλη μου την εύνοια· του έδωσα το Πνεύμα μου· θα φέρει στα έθνη δικαιοσύνη. 2 Δε θα κραυγάζει ούτε θα υψώνει τη φωνή, ούτε και θα βροντολαλεί στους δρόμους. 3 Καλάμι τσακισμένο δεν θα το συντρίψει, λυχνάρι που καπνίζει δεν θα το σβήσει· πραγματική θα φέρει σ’ όλους δικαιοσύνη. 4 Αυτός δεν θα δειλιάσει ούτε θα εξασθενήσει, ωσότου εγκαταστήσει στη γη τη δικαιοσύνη· κι οι μακρινές οι χώρες θα περιμένουνε το νόμο του».

5 Αυτά λέει ο Θεός, ο Κύριος, που δημιούργησε και άπλωσε τους ουρανούς, που στέριωσε τη γη κι ό,τι απ’ αυτήν παράγεται, ζωή που ’δωσε και πνοή σε όλους τους λαούς, σ’ όλους αυτούς που πάνω της κινούνται:

6 «Εγώ, ο Κύριος, σε κάλεσα σύμφωνα με το σχέδιό μου και σε υποστήριξα, σε φύλαξα και σ’ έκανα εγγυητή της διαθήκης μου με τους ανθρώπους. Φως των εθνών σε έκανα, 7 τα μάτια για ν’ ανοίξεις των τυφλών, τους αιχμαλώτους από τα δεσμά να ελευθερώσεις, κι αυτούς που κατοικούν στα σκότη απ’ την υπόγεια φυλακή. 8 Εγώ είμαι ο Κύριος, αυτό είναι τ’ όνομά μου. Τη δόξα μου δεν θα τη δώσω σε άλλον, ούτε τη φήμη μου στα είδωλα. 9 Οι εξαγγελίες οι παλιές εκπληρωθήκαν, καινούριες αναγγέλλω τώρα· όσα είναι να γίνουν σας τα αναγγέλλω από πριν».

10 Ψάλτε στον Κύριο καινούριο τραγούδι, ψάλτε τη δόξα του από τα πέρατα της γης! Ας τον υμνεί η θάλασσα κι όλοι όσοι ταξιδεύουνε σ’ αυτήν, οι μακρινές οι χώρες κι όλοι οι κάτοικοί τους. 11 Ύμνο ας υψώσουν στο Θεό, η έρημος κι οι πολιτείες της και τα χωριά όπου κατοικεί ο λαός του Κηδάρ· ας ψάλουν της Σελά*Σελά. Πρόκειται πιθανότατα για την πρωτεύουσα των Ναβαταίων, την Πέτρα, στο κέντρο της βραχώδους ερήμου Αραβά (νότια της Νεκράς Θάλασσας). οι κάτοικοι· ας στείλουνε φωνές χαράς απ’ τις βουνοκορφές. 12 Τον Κύριο ας δοξάσουν και δυνατά ας τον υμνήσουν αυτοί που κατοικούν σε χώρες μακρινές.

13 Ο Κύριος σαν ήρωας πλησιάζει, με ορμή πολεμιστή, το σύνθημα της μάχης φωνάζει, βγάζει πολεμική κραυγή, υπερισχύει απέναντι στους αντιπάλους του.

14 Ο Κύριος λέει: «Πολύν καιρό έχω που σωπαίνω· άπραγος έμεινα και συγκρατήθηκα. Μα τώρα θα φωνάξω σαν τη γυναίκα που γεννάει, θ’ αναστενάξω κι η ανάσα μου βαριά θα βγει. 15 Θα ερημώσω λόφους και βουνά κι όλη τη χλόη τους θα την ξεράνω· θα κάνω τα ποτάμια να γίνουν έρημοι, τις λίμνες θα αποξηράνω. 16 Θα φέρω τους τυφλούς σε δρόμο που δε γνώριζαν, σ’ άγνωστα θα τους οδηγήσω μονοπάτια· θα κάνω το σκοτάδι φως να γενεί μπροστά τους κι οι δρόμοι οι κακοτράχαλοι, καλοστρωμένοι. Αυτά τα σχέδια θα τα εκτελέσω εγώ και τίποτα δε θα παραλειφθεί.

17 »Θα οπισθοχωρήσουν, όμως, θα ντροπιαστούν όσοι στηρίζονται στα είδωλα και λέν’ στα σκαλιστά αγάλματα: "εσείς είστε οι θεοί μας"».

18 «Κουφοί, ακούστε», λέει ο Κύριος, «και τυφλοί τα μάτια σας ανοίξτε για να δείτε. 19 Υπάρχει τάχα άλλος τυφλός εκτός από σένα, που σε διάλεξα να είσαι δούλος μου;*δούλος μου. Εδώ υπονοείται ολόκληρος ο λαός Ισραήλ. Υπάρχει τάχα άλλος κουφός εκτός από σένα, που είσαι ο αγγελιοφόρος μου; Κανείς δεν είν’ τόσο τυφλός, όσο ο απεσταλμένος μου· κανείς τόσο κουφός, όσο ο δούλος μου. 20 Πολλά είδατε, μα σημασία δεν τους δώσατε· τ’ αυτιά σας τα ’χετε ανοιχτά, μα δεν ακούτε. 21 Εγώ ο Κύριος, πιστός στις υποσχέσεις μου, σας έδωσα έναν ένδοξο μεγαλειώδη νόμο. 22 Εσείς όμως είστε λαός που σας λεηλάτησαν και που σας γύμνωσαν· όλοι σας παγιδευμένοι είστε στα σπήλαια και μες στις φυλακές κλεισμένοι· σας λεηλατούν χωρίς κανείς να σας γλιτώνει, αρπάζουν τ’ αγαθά σας χωρίς κανείς πίσω να τα ζητά. 23 Ποιος από σας δίνει πια προσοχή σ’ αυτά; Ποιος από ’δω κι εμπρός θ’ ακούει μ’ ενδιαφέρον για το μέλλον;»

24 Ποιος στους ληστές παρέδωσε τον Ιακώβ, στους άρπαγες τον Ισραήλ; Δεν είν’ ο Κύριος, που απέναντί του αμαρτήσαμε; Δε θέλησαν ν’ ακολουθήσουνε το δρόμο του ούτε στο νόμο του υπακούσαν. 25 Γι’ αυτό έριξε απάνω τους τη φοβερή οργή του και του πολέμου την άγρια μάνητα· φλόγες τους περικύκλωσαν θανάτου, μα αυτοί το τι γινόταν δεν κατάλαβαν· σχεδόν τους αποτέφρωσε, μα αυτοί κανένα μάθημα δεν πήραν.

5 Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: 6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; 7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. 8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. 9 Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them. 10 Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.*42.10 all…: Heb. the fulness thereof 11 Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains. 12 Let them give glory unto the LORD, and declare his praise in the islands.

13 The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.*42.13 prevail: or, behave himself mightily 14 I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once.*42.14 devour: Heb. swallow, or, sup up 15 I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools. 16 And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. 17 They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods.

18 Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see. 19 Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD’s servant? 20 Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not. 21 The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.*42.21 it: or, him 22 But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore.*42.22 they are all…: or, in snaring all the young men of them*42.22 for a spoil: Heb. a treading 23 Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come?*42.23 for…: Heb. for the after time? 24 Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the LORD, he against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law. 25 Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
