1 Πέρασε πολύς καιρός από τότε που ο Θεός εξασφάλισε την ειρήνη στο λαό Ισραήλ από όλους τους γύρω εχθρούς του. Ο Ιησούς είχε πια γεράσει και είχε φτάσει σε μεγάλη ηλικία. 2 Τότε κάλεσε όλους τους Ισραηλίτες, τους πρεσβυτέρους τους, τους αρχηγούς τους, τους κριτές τους, τους άρχοντές τους και τους αξιωματούχους τους και τους είπε:

«Εγώ πια γέρασα. Έχω φτάσει σε μεγάλη ηλικία. 3 Εσείς είδατε τα όσα έκανε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, σε όλα αυτά τα έθνη για χάρη σας· αυτός ήταν που πολέμησε για σας. 4 Βλέπετε ότι μοίρασα με κλήρο στις φυλές σας αυτά τα έθνη που έχουν απομείνει για να τα πάρετε ιδιοκτησία σας, μαζί με όλα τα έθνη που εξόντωσα από τον Ιορδάνη ως τη Μεγάλη Θάλασσα, δυτικά. 5 Ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, αυτός θα τους εκδιώξει από μπροστά σας και θα τους κάνει να τραπούν σε φυγή μόλις σας δουν· κι εσείς θα πάρετε ιδιοκτησία σας τη χώρα τους, όπως σας το υποσχέθηκε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας.

6 »Πάρτε, λοιπόν, σταθερά την απόφαση να τηρείτε και να εκτελείτε απαρέγκλιτα όλα όσα είναι γραμμένα στο βιβλίο του νόμου του Μωυσή. 7 Να μην αναμιχθείτε μ’ αυτά τα έθνη που έχουν απομείνει ανάμεσά σας· ούτε να μνημονεύετε το όνομα των θεών τους ή να ορκίζεστε σ’ αυτούς ή να τους λατρεύετε ή να τους προσκυνάτε. 8 Αλλά να είστε προσκολλημένοι στον Κύριο, το Θεό σας, όπως κάνατε μέχρι σήμερα.

9 »Γι’ αυτό ο Κύριος έδιωξε από μπροστά σας μεγάλα και ισχυρά έθνη και κανείς δεν μπόρεσε να σας αντισταθεί μέχρι σήμερα. 10 Ένας άντρας από σας μπορούσε να καταδιώξει χίλιους, γιατί ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, αυτός πολεμούσε για σας, όπως σας το είχε υποσχεθεί. 11 Γι’ αυτό προσέχετε πολύ να αγαπάτε τον Κύριο, το Θεό σας. 12 Αν όμως ποτέ αποστατήσετε απ’ αυτόν και ενωθείτε με τα κατάλοιπα των εθνών που απόμειναν ανάμεσά σας, αν έρθετε σ’ επιμειξία μ’ αυτούς, κι αυτοί μ’ εσάς, 13 τότε να είστε βέβαιοι, ότι ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, θα σταματήσει να διώχνει τα έθνη αυτά από μπροστά σας. Έτσι αυτά θα γίνουν για σας παγίδα και ενέδρα, μαστίγια στα πλευρά σας και αγκάθια στα μάτια σας. Ώσπου στο τέλος να εξαφανιστείτε από την όμορφη αυτή χώρα, που σας έδωσε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας.

14 »Βλέπετε, εγώ σήμερα παίρνω το δρόμο που κάποτε παίρνει όλος ο κόσμος· αλλά εσείς πρέπει ν’ αναγνωρίσετε με όλη την καρδιά σας και την ψυχή σας ότι καμιά από τις ωραίες υποσχέσεις που σας έδωσε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, δεν έμεινε ανεκπλήρωτη. Εκπληρώθηκαν όλες στο ακέραιο. 15 Όπως όμως εκπληρώθηκαν όλες οι ωραίες υποσχέσεις που σας έδωσε ο Κύριος, ο Θεός σας, έτσι ο Κύριος θα πραγματοποιήσει εναντίον σας όλες τις απειλές του, ωσότου σας εξαφανίσει από την όμορφη αυτή χώρα που σας έδωσε. 16 Αν παραβείτε τη διαθήκη που αυτός σας έδωσε και πάτε και λατρεύσετε άλλους θεούς και τους προσκυνήσετε, τότε θα ξεσπάσει ο θυμός του εναντίον σας και θα εξαφανιστείτε στη στιγμή από την όμορφη αυτή χώρα που σας έδωσε ο Κύριος».

1 And it came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and stricken in age.*23.1 stricken…: Heb. come into days 2 And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and stricken in age: 3 And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God is he that hath fought for you. 4 Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.*23.4 westward: Heb. at the sunset 5 And the LORD your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your God hath promised unto you. 6 Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left; 7 That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them: 8 But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.*23.8 But cleave…: or, For if ye will cleave, etc 9 For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.*23.9 For the LORD…: or, Then the LORD will drive 10 One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.

11 Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.*23.11 yourselves: Heb. your souls 12 Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you: 13 Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you. 14 And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof. 15 Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you. 16 When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.
