1 Τότε ο Κύριος έδωσε εντολή στον Ιησού 2 να πει στους Ισραηλίτες: «Διαλέξτε τις πόλεις που θα χρησιμεύουν για άσυλο, για τις οποίες σας μίλησα μέσω του Μωυσέως. 3 Εκεί θα καταφεύγει ο φονιάς που θα τύχει να σκοτώσει άνθρωπο από αμέλεια, χωρίς να το θέλει· οι πόλεις αυτές θα σας χρησιμεύουν για άσυλο από τον εκδικητή του θύματος. 4 Όταν ο φονιάς καταφύγει σε μια απ’ αυτές τις πόλεις, θα σταθεί στην είσοδο της πύλης και θ’ αναπτύξει στους πρεσβυτέρους της την περίπτωσή του· τότε αυτοί θα τον πάρουν στην πόλη και θα του παραχωρήσουν έναν τόπο, όπου θα μπορεί να μείνει μαζί τους. 5 Κι αν καταδιώξει το φονιά ο εκδικητής του θύματος, δε θα του τον παραδώσουν, γιατί σκότωσε άνθρωπο χωρίς να το θέλει, χωρίς προηγουμένως να τον μισεί. 6 Ο φονιάς θα μείνει σ’ εκείνη την πόλη ωσότου παρουσιαστεί μπροστά στην κοινότητα για να κριθεί απαλλακτικά, όταν θα πεθάνει ο αρχιερέας που θα ιερατεύει εκείνη την εποχή. Τότε μπορεί ο φονιάς να επιστρέψει στο σπίτι του, στην πόλη απ’ όπου είχε δραπετεύσει».

7 Ξεχώρισαν, λοιπόν, την Κέδες στη Γαλιλαία, στην ορεινή περιοχή της φυλής Νεφθαλί, τη Συχέμ στην ορεινή περιοχή της φυλής Εφραΐμ και την Κιριάθ-Αρβά, που είναι η σημερινή Χεβρών, στην ορεινή περιοχή της φυλής Ιούδα. 8 Πέρα από τον Ιορδάνη, ανατολικά της Ιεριχώ, διάλεξαν τη Βεσέρ στην έρημο του οροπεδίου, για τη φυλή Ρουβήν, τη Ραμώθ στη Γαλαάδ, για τη φυλή Γαδ και τη Γωλάν στη Βασάν, για τη φυλή Μανασσή. 9 Αυτές ήταν, λοιπόν, οι πόλεις που ορίστηκαν για όλους τους Ισραηλίτες και για τους ξένους που έμεναν ανάμεσά τους. Θα μπορούσε να καταφεύγει σ’ αυτές καθένας που θα σκότωνε άνθρωπο εξ αμελείας, κι έτσι δεν θα κινδύνευε να θανατωθεί από τον εκδικητή του θύματος, μέχρις ότου ο δράστης παρουσιαστεί στην κοινότητα για να δικαστεί.

1 The LORD also spake unto Joshua, saying, 2 Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint out for you cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses: 3 That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood. 4 And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them. 5 And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime. 6 And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.

7 And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.*20.7 appointed: Heb. sanctified 8 And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh. 9 These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.
