1 Όταν έμαθε αυτές τις κατακτήσεις ο Ιαβείν, βασιλιάς της Ασώρ, έστειλε μήνυμα στον Ιωβάβ, βασιλιά της Μαδών, στους βασιλιάδες της Σιμρών και της Αχσάφ, 2 στους βασιλιάδες των ορεινών περιοχών στα βόρεια, στην κοιλάδα του Ιορδάνη νότια της λίμνης Χιννερώθ,*Βλ. υποσ. εις Αρ 34:11. στις πεδινές περιοχές και στα υψώματα της Δωρ, δυτικά. 3 Επίσης ήρθε σε συνεννόηση με τους Χαναναίους στα ανατολικά και στα δυτικά, καθώς και με τους Αμορραίους, τους Χετταίους, τους Φερεζαίους και τους Ιεβουσαίους της ορεινής περιοχής και με τους Ευαίους, στους πρόποδες του όρους Ερμών, στη Μισπά.

4 Όλοι αυτοί οι βασιλιάδες ξεκίνησαν με αναρίθμητο στρατό, σαν την άμμο στην ακροθαλασσιά, με πάρα πολλά άλογα και άμαξες. 5 Ένωσαν τις δυνάμεις τους κι ήρθαν και στρατοπέδευσαν όλοι μαζί κοντά στα νερά της Μερώμ, με σκοπό να πολεμήσουν τους Ισραηλίτες.

6 Ο Κύριος όμως είπε στον Ιησού: «Μην τους φοβάσαι όλους αυτούς· αύριο τέτοια ώρα, εγώ θα τους παραδώσω νεκρούς στους Ισραηλίτες· θα κόψεις τους τένοντες από τα πόδια των αλόγων τους και θα κάψεις τις άμαξές τους».

7 Έτσι ο Ιησούς και οι πολεμιστές του, ήρθαν και τους επιτεθήκαν με ορμή αιφνιδιαστικά στα νερά της Μερώμ. 8 Ο Κύριος τους παρέδωσε στους Ισραηλίτες· αυτοί τους χτύπησαν και τους καταδίωξαν ως τη Σιδώνα, τη μεγάλη πόλη, ως τη Μισρεφώθ-Μαΐμ κι ως τη Κοιλάδα της Μισπά, ανατολικά. Τους εξόντωσαν όλους· δεν ξέφυγε κανένας. 9 Ο Ιησούς έκανε σ’ αυτούς ό,τι του είχε πει ο Κύριος· έκοψε τους τένοντες από τα πόδια των αλόγων τους και έκαψε τις άμαξές τους.

10 Την ίδια εποχή, επιστρέφοντας ο Ιησούς κατέλαβε την Ασώρ που άλλοτε ήταν η πρωτεύουσα όλων εκείνων των βασιλείων. Έσφαξε το βασιλιά της 11 και παρέδωσε στη σφαγή όλους τους κατοίκους της· δεν έμεινε κανένα πλάσμα ζωντανό. Τέλος έβαλε φωτιά στην πόλη.

12 Έτσι, ο Ιησούς κατέκτησε όλες εκείνες τις πόλεις και παρέδωσε τους βασιλιάδες τους και όλους τους κατοίκους τους στη σφαγή, όπως είχε διατάξει ο Μωυσής, ο δούλος του Κυρίου. 13 Ωστόσο οι Ισραηλίτες, δεν έκαψαν τις πόλεις που βρίσκονταν στα υψώματα, εκτός από την Ασώρ, που την είχε πυρπολήσει ο Ιησούς. 14 Πήραν για τον εαυτό τους όλα τα λάφυρα των πόλεων εκείνων και τα κτήνη· τους ανθρώπους όμως τους κατέσφαξαν και τους εξαφάνισαν όλους. Δεν άφησαν κανένα πλάσμα ζωντανό. 15 Τις προσταγές που είχε δώσει ο Κύριος στο Μωυσή, το δούλο του, ο Μωυσής τις μεταβίβασε στον Ιησού, κι εκείνος τις εκτέλεσε, χωρίς να παραλείψει τίποτα.

16 Ο Ιησούς κατέλαβε ολόκληρη τη χώρα: Την ορεινή περιοχή, την περιοχή του νότου, όλη την περιοχή της Γεσέν,*Βλ. υποσ. εις κεφ. 10:41. την πεδινή περιοχή, την κοιλάδα του Ιορδάνη, καθώς και τα ορεινά και τα πεδινά του βορρά. 17 Νίκησε και θανάτωσε τους βασιλιάδες των περιοχών που εκτείνονται από τις ορεινές ερήμους κοντά στο όρος Σηείρ, νότια, μέχρι τη Βάαλ-Γαδ στην Κοιλάδα του Λιβάνου, στους πρόποδες του Ερμών, βόρεια. 18 Για πολύν καιρό πολεμούσε ο Ιησούς εναντίον όλων αυτών των βασιλιάδων. 19 Καμιά πόλη δεν έκανε ειρήνη με τους Ισραηλίτες, εκτός από τη Γαβαών, που την κατοικούσαν Ευαίοι. Όλες τις άλλες πόλεις τις κατέλαβαν με πόλεμο. 20 Κι αυτό, γιατί ο Κύριος επέτρεψε να σκληρυνθεί η καρδιά αυτών των λαών και να πολεμήσουν τους Ισραηλίτες. Αυτοί όμως τους εξόντωσαν χωρίς έλεος και τους αφάνισαν, όπως είχε διατάξει ο Κύριος το Μωυσή.

21 Εκείνο τον καιρό ο Ιησούς πήγε και εξολόθρευσε τους Ανακίμ που ζούσαν στα βουνά, στη Χεβρών, στη Δεβείρ και στην Ανάβ και σ’ ολόκληρη την ορεινή περιοχή του Ιούδα και του Ισραήλ. Τους αφάνισε και κατέστρεψε τις πόλεις τους. 22 Δεν απόμεινε πια απόγονος του Ανάκ στη χώρα των Ισραηλιτών, παρά μόνο μερικοί στη Γάζα, στη Γαθ και στην Ασδώδ.

23 Έτσι, ο Ιησούς κατέλαβε ολόκληρη τη χώρα, καθώς είχε διατάξει ο Κύριος το Μωυσή, και κατόπιν την έδωσε για ιδιοκτησία στους Ισραηλίτες, κατανέμοντας σε κάθε φυλή το μερίδιό της. Έτσι η χώρα ησύχασε από τους πολέμους.

1 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, 2 And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west, 3 And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh. 4 And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many. 5 And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.*11.5 met…: Heb. assembled by appointment

6 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire. 7 So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them. 8 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.*11.8 great Zidon: or, Zidonrabbah*11.8 Misrephoth-maim: or, Salt pits: Heb. Burnings of waters 9 And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him: he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.

10 And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms. 11 And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.*11.11 any…: Heb. any breath 12 And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded. 13 But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.*11.13 in their…: Heb. on their heap 14 And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.

15 As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.*11.15 left…: Heb. removed nothing 16 So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same; 17 Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and slew them.*11.17 the mount…: or, the smooth mountain 18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. 19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle. 20 For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.

21 And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities. 22 There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained. 23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
