1 Η Ιεριχώ είχε τα τείχη της κλειστά κι αμπαρωμένα για να μην μπορέσουν να μπουν οι Ισραηλίτες. Κανείς δεν έβγαινε ούτε έμπαινε στην πόλη. 2 Τότε είπε ο Κύριος στον Ιησού: «Σου παραδίνω την Ιεριχώ, το βασιλιά της και τους πολεμιστές της στα χέρια σου. 3 Εσύ και όλος ο στρατός θα παρελάσετε γύρω από την πόλη, κάνοντας μια φορά την ημέρα επί έξι μέρες το γύρο της. 4 Εφτά ιερείς θα πηγαίνουν μπροστά από την κιβωτό και θα κρατούν εφτά κεράτινες σάλπιγγες. Την έβδομη μέρα θα κάνετε εφτά φορές το γύρο της πόλης, ενώ οι ιερείς θα σαλπίζουν με τις σάλπιγγες. 5 Όταν τους ακούσετε να δώσουν παρατεταμένο σάλπισμα, τότε όλος ο στρατός θα βγάλει μεγάλον αλαλαγμό και το τείχος της πόλης θα πέσει κάτω. Αμέσως οι Ισραηλίτες θα ορμήσουν στην επίθεση και θα μπουν κατ’ ευθείαν στην πόλη».

6 Ο Ιησούς, γιος του Ναυή, κάλεσε τους ιερείς και τους είπε: Σηκώστε την κιβωτό της διαθήκης και εφτά ιερείς θα προπορεύονται μπροστά της κρατώντας εφτά κεράτινες σάλπιγγες». 7 Έπειτα διέταξε το λαό: «Εμπρός! Αρχίστε να κάνετε το γύρο της πόλης· η εμπροσθοφυλακή, όμως, να πηγαίνει μπροστά από την κιβωτό του Κυρίου».

8 Σύμφωνα με τις διαταγές του Ιησού, οι εφτά ιερείς που κρατούσαν τις κεράτινες σάλπιγγες πήγαιναν μπροστά από την κιβωτό και σάλπιζαν, ενώ εκείνοι που μετέφεραν την κιβωτό της διαθήκης του Κυρίου τούς ακολουθούσαν. 9 Η εμπροσθοφυλακή του στρατού βάδιζε μπροστά από τους ιερείς, οι οποίοι σάλπιζαν ασταμάτητα με τις σάλπιγγες, και το υπόλοιπο του στρατεύματος ήταν οπισθοφυλακή της κιβωτού. 10 Ο Ιησούς είχε δώσει στο στρατό ρητή διαταγή: «Δε θα βγάλετε άχνα. Λέξη δε θα βγει από το στόμα σας, ως τη μέρα που θα σας πω εγώ να αλαλάξετε. Μόνο τότε θα φωνάξετε». 11 Έτσι, η κιβωτός του Κυρίου έκανε μια φορά το γύρο της πόλης κι έπειτα επέστρεψαν στο στρατόπεδο και πέρασαν εκεί τη νύχτα.

12 Νωρίς το άλλο πρωί σηκώθηκε ο Ιησούς, και οι ιερείς σήκωσαν πάλι την κιβωτό του Κυρίου. 13 Οι εφτά ιερείς με τις κεράτινες σάλπιγγες βάδιζαν μπροστά από την κιβωτό σαλπίζοντας συνεχώς. Η εμπροσθοφυλακή προχωρούσε μπροστά τους και η οπισθοφυλακή ακολουθούσε την κιβωτό του Κυρίου. 14 Τη δεύτερη μέρα έκαναν μία φορά το γύρο της πόλης και επέστρεψαν στο στρατόπεδο. Έξι μέρες έκαναν το ίδιο.

15 Την έβδομη μέρα σηκώθηκαν με την αυγή κι έκαναν εφτά φορές το γύρο της πόλης με τον ίδιο τρόπο. Ήταν η μόνη μέρα που έκαναν το γύρο της πόλης εφτά φορές. 16 Την έβδομη φορά, όταν οι ιερείς ήταν να σαλπίσουν με τις σάλπιγγες, ο Ιησούς είπε στο λαό: «Αλαλάξτε τώρα! Ο Κύριος σας παρέδωσε την πόλη! 17 Η πόλη και ό,τι υπάρχει σ’ αυτήν θα γίνει ανάθεμα και θα καταστραφεί ως αφιέρωμα στον Κύριο.*Βλ. υποσ. εις Αρ 21:2. Μόνο τη Ραάβ την πόρνη θ’ αφήσετε να ζήσει –αυτήν και όλους όσοι είναι μαζί της στο σπίτι της– επειδή έκρυψε τους απεσταλμένους μας. 18 Εσείς όμως φυλαχτείτε από το ανάθεμα· μην πάρετε τίποτε απ’ αυτά που είναι προορισμένα να καταστραφούν, γιατί τότε θα επιφέρετε κατάρα στο στρατόπεδο των Ισραηλιτών και θα προξενήσετε σ’ αυτό καταστροφή. 19 Όλο το ασήμι και το χρυσάφι, τα χάλκινα και τα σιδερένια σκεύη θα αφιερωθούν στον Κύριο και θα τοποθετηθούν στο θησαυροφυλάκιο του Κυρίου».

20 Μετά οι ιερείς σάλπισαν με τις σάλπιγγες· και μόλις ο λαός άκουσε τον ήχο της σάλπιγγας, ξέσπασε σε μεγάλον αλαλαγμό και σωριάστηκε το τείχος. Τότε ο στρατός επιτέθηκε στην πόλη, όρμησαν κατ’ ευθείαν μέσα και την κατέλαβαν. 21 Καθετί που υπήρχε στην πόλη, άνδρες και γυναίκες, νέοι, γέροι, βόδια, πρόβατα και γαϊδούρια, όλα παραδόθηκαν στη σφαγή.

22 Τότε είπε ο Ιησούς στους δύο άνδρες, που είχαν κατασκοπεύσει τη χώρα: «Μπείτε στο σπίτι εκείνης της πόρνης και βγάλτε την από ’κει, αυτήν και όλους όσοι είναι μαζί της, όπως της ορκιστήκατε». 23 Εκείνοι μπήκαν στο σπίτι κι έβγαλαν έξω τη Ραάβ, τους γονείς της, τ’ αδέρφια της και όλους τους υπόλοιπους συγγενείς της και τα υπάρχοντά της. Τους πήραν και τους εγκατέστησαν σε ασφαλές μέρος έξω από το στρατόπεδο των Ισραηλιτών.

24 Ύστερα έβαλαν φωτιά στην πόλη κι έκαναν στάχτη ό,τι βρισκόταν μέσα σ’ αυτήν. Μόνο το ασήμι, το χρυσάφι, τα χάλκινα και τα σιδερένια αντικείμενα τα πήραν και τα τοποθέτησαν στο θησαυροφυλάκιο του οίκου του Κυρίου. 25 Αλλά ο Ιησούς χάρισε τη ζωή στη Ραάβ την πόρνη, στην οικογένεια του πατέρα της και σε όλους τους δικούς της, επειδή είχε κρύψει τους ανθρώπους που αυτός είχε στείλει για να κατασκοπεύσουν την Ιεριχώ. Η Ραάβ εγκαταστάθηκε ανάμεσα στους Ισραηλίτες και οι απόγονοί της ζουν μέχρι σήμερα.

26 Εκείνες τις μέρες, ο Ιησούς έδωσε αυτόν τον όρκο σχετικά με την Ιεριχώ: «Καταραμένος να είναι από τον Κύριο ο άνθρωπος που θα επιχειρήσει να ξαναχτίσει αυτή την πόλη.

Με τίμημα το γιο του τον πρωτότοκο

θα βάλει τα θεμέλιά της,

τις πύλες της θα στήσει

με τίμημα το νιότερο το γιο».

27 Ο Κύριος ήταν μαζί με τον Ιησού, και η φήμη του απλώθηκε σ’ ολόκληρη τη χώρα.

Thus shalt thou do six days. 4 And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams’ horns: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. 5 And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall ascend up every man straight before him.*6.5 flat: Heb. under it

6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD. 7 And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD.

8 And it came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns passed on before the LORD, and blew with the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed them.

9 And the armed men went before the priests that blew with the trumpets, and the rereward came after the ark, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets.*6.9 rereward: Heb. gathering host 10 And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.*6.10 any noise…: Heb. your voice to be heard 11 So the ark of the LORD compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

12 And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD. 13 And seven priests bearing seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew with the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rereward came after the ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets. 14 And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days. 15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times. 16 And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for the LORD hath given you the city.

17 And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.*6.17 accursed: or, devoted 18 And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.*6.18 accursed: or, devoted*6.18 a curse: or, devoted 19 But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they shall come into the treasury of the LORD.*6.19 consecrated: Heb. holiness 20 So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.*6.20 flat: Heb. under it 21 And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword. 22 But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, Go into the harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her. 23 And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel.*6.23 kindred: Heb. families 24 And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD. 25 And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

26 And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it. 27 So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.
