1 Now King David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he got no heat.2 Therefore his slaves said to him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and cherish him; and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.3 So they sought for a beautiful damsel throughout all the borders of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.4 And the damsel was very beautiful; and she cherished the king, and ministered to him; but the king didn't have any sex with her.5 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.6 And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why have you done so? And he was also a very goodly man; and he was born after Absalom.7 And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and those following Adonijah helped him.8 But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.9 And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En-rogel; and he called all his brothers, the king's sons, and all the men of Judah, the king's slaves:10 but Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he did not call.11 Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith reigns, and David our lord does not know it?12 Now therefore come, let me, I pray you, give you counsel, that you may save your own life, and the life of your son Solomon.13 Go and get in to King David, and say to him, Did you not, my lord, O king, swear to your slave, saying, Assuredly Solomon your son will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne? Why then does Adonijah reign?14 Look, while you yet talk there with the king, I also will come in after you, and confirm your words.15 And Bathsheba went in to the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was ministering to the king.16 And Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance to the king. And the king said, What do you want?17 And she said to him, My lord, you swore by Yahweh your God to your slave, [saying], Assuredly Solomon your son will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne.18 And now, look, Adonijah reigns; and you, my lord the king, do not know it:19 and he has slain oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host; but Solomon your slave he has not called.20 And you, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, that you should tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.21 Otherwise it will come to pass, when my lord the king will sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be counted offenders.22 And, look, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.23 And they told the king, saying, Look, Nathan the prophet. And when he came in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.24 And Nathan said, My lord, O king, have you said, Adonijah will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne?25 For he has gone down this day, and has slain oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king's sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, look, they are eating and drinking before him, and say, [Long] live King Adonijah.26 But me, even me your slave, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your slave Solomon, he has not called.27 Is this thing done by my lord the king, and you have not shown to your slave who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?28 Then King David answered and said, Call to me Bathsheba. And she came into the king's presence, and stood before the king.29 And the king swore, and said, As Yahweh lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,30 truly as I swore to you by Yahweh, the God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon your son will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne in my stead; truly so I will do this day.31 Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did obeisance to the king, and said, Let my lord King David live forever.32 And King David said, Call to me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.33 And the king said to them, Take with you{+} the slaves of your{+} lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:34 and let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel; and blow{+} the trumpet, and say, [Long] live King Solomon.35 Then you{+} will come up after him, and he will come and sit on my throne; for he will be king in my stead; and I have appointed him to be leader over Israel and over Judah.36 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: Yahweh, the God of my lord the king, says so [too].37 As Yahweh has been with my lord the king, even so he will be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.38 So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride on king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon.39 And Zadok the priest took the horn of oil out of the Tent, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, [Long] live King Solomon.40 And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.41 And Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Why is this noise of the city being in an uproar?42 While he yet spoke, look, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said, Come in; for you are a worthy man, and bring good news.43 And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Truly our lord King David has made Solomon king:44 and the king has sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to ride on the king's mule;45 and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon; and they have come up from there rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that you{+} have heard.46 And also Solomon sits on the throne of the kingdom.47 And moreover the king's slaves came to bless our lord King David, saying, Your God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and make his throne greater than your throne: and the king bowed himself on the bed.48 And also thus said the king, Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, who has given one to sit on my throne this day, my eyes even seeing it.49 And all the guests of Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.50 And Adonijah feared because of Solomon; and he arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.51 And it was told Solomon, saying, Look, Adonijah fears King Solomon; for, look, he has laid hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not slay his slave with the sword.52 And Solomon said, If he will show himself a worthy man, not a hair of him will fall to the earth; but if wickedness is found in him, he will die.53 So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and did obeisance to King Solomon; and Solomon said to him, Go to your house.

1 Quando o rei Davi envelheceu, já de idade bem avançada, cobriam-no de cobertores, mas ele não se aquecia.2 Por isso os seus servos lhe propuseram: "Nós vamos procurar uma jovem virgem para servir e cuidar do rei. Ela se deitará ao seu lado, afim de aquecer o rei".3 Então procuraram em todo o território de Israel uma jovem que fosse bonita e encontraram Abisague, uma sunamita, e a levaram ao rei.4 A jovem, muito bonita, cuidava do rei e o servia, mas o rei não teve relações com ela.5 Ora, Adonias, cuja mãe se chamava Hagite, tomou a dianteira e disse: "Eu serei o rei". Providenciou uma carruagem e cavalos, além de cinqüenta homens para correrem à sua frente.6 Seu pai nunca o havia contrariado; nunca lhe perguntava: "Por que você age assim? " Adonias também tinha boa aparência e havia nascido depois de Absalão.7 Adonias fez acordo com Joabe, filho de Zeruia, e com o sacerdote Abiatar, e eles, o seguiram e o apoiaram.8 Mas o sacerdote Zadoque, Benaia, filho de Joiada, o profeta Natã, Simei, Reí e a guarda especial de Davi não deram apoio a Adonias.9 Então Adonias sacrificou ovelhas, bois e novilhos gordos junto à pedra de Zoelete, próximo a En-Rogel. Convidou todos os seus irmãos, filhos do rei, e todos os homens de Judá que eram conselheiros do rei,10 mas não convidou o profeta Natã nem Benaia nem a guarda especial nem o seu irmão Salomão.11 Natã perguntou então a Bate-Seba, mãe de Salomão: "Você ainda não sabe que Adonias, o filho de Hagite, tornou-se rei, sem que o nosso senhor Davi ficasse sabendo?12 Agora, vou dar-lhe um conselho para salvar a sua vida e também a vida do seu filho Salomão.13 Vá perguntar ao rei Davi: Ó rei, meu senhor, não juraste a esta tua serva, prometendo: ‘Tenha certeza que o seu filho Salomão me sucederá como rei, e se assentará no meu trono? ’ Por que foi então, que Adonias se tornou rei?14 Enquanto você ainda estiver conversando com o rei, eu entrarei e confirmarei as suas palavras".15 Então Bate-Seba foi até o quarto do rei, já idoso, onde a sunamita Abisague cuidava dele.16 Bate-Seba ajoelhou-se e prostrou-se diante do rei. "O que você quer? ", o rei perguntou.17 Ela respondeu: "Meu senhor, tu mesmo juraste a esta tua serva, pelo Senhor o teu Deus: ‘Seu filho Salomão o sucederá como rei e se assentará no meu trono’.18 Mas agora Adonias se tornou rei, sem que o rei meu senhor o soubesse.19 Ele sacrificou muitos bois, novilhos gordos e ovelhas, e convidou todos os filhos do rei, o sacerdote Abiatar, e Joabe, o comandante do exército, mas não convidou o teu servo Salomão.20 Agora, ó rei, meu senhor, os olhos de todo o Israel estão sobre ti para saber de tua parte, quem sucederá ao rei, meu senhor, no trono.21 De outro modo, tão logo o rei, meu senhor descanse com os seus antepassados, eu e o meu filho Salomão seremos tratados como traidores".22 Ela ainda conversava com o rei, quando o profeta Natã chegou.23 Assim que informaram o rei que o profeta Natã havia chegado, ele entrou e prostrou-se, rosto em terra, diante do rei.24 E Natã lhe perguntou: "Ó rei, meu senhor, por acaso declaraste que Adonias te sucederia como rei e que ele se assentaria no teu trono?25 Hoje ele foi matar muitos bois, novilhos gordos e ovelhas. Convidou todos os filhos do rei, os comandantes do exército e o sacerdote Abiatar. Agora eles estão comendo e bebendo com ele e comemorando: ‘Viva o rei Adonias! ’26 Mas ele não convidou a mim, que sou teu servo, nem ao sacerdote Zadoque nem a Benaia, filho de Joiada, nem a teu servo Salomão.27 Seria isto algo que o rei, meu senhor, fez sem deixar que os seus conselheiros soubessem quem sucederia ao rei, meu senhor, no trono? "28 Então o rei Davi ordenou: "Chamem Bate-Seba". Ela entrou e ficou de pé diante dele.29 O rei fez então um juramento: "Juro pelo nome do Senhor, o qual me livrou de todas as adversidades,30 que sem dúvida hoje mesmo vou executar o que jurei pelo Senhor, o Deus de Israel. O seu filho Salomão me sucederá como rei e se assentará no meu trono em meu lugar".31 Então Bate-Seba prostrou-se, rosto em terra, e, ajoelhando-se diante do rei, disse: "Que o rei Davi, meu senhor, viva para sempre! "32 O rei Davi ordenou: "Chamem o sacerdote Zadoque, o profeta Natã e Benaia, filho de Joiada". Quando chegaram à presença do rei,33 ele os instruiu: "Levem os conselheiros do seu senhor com vocês e ponham o meu filho Salomão sobre a minha mula e levem-no a Giom.34 Ali o sacerdote Zadoque e o profeta Natã o ungirão rei sobre Israel. Então toquem a trombeta e gritem: Viva o rei Salomão!35 Depois acompanhem-no, e ele virá assentar-se no meu trono e reinará em meu lugar. Eu o designei para governar Israel e Judá".36 Benaia, filho de Joiada, respondeu ao rei: "Assim se fará! Que o Senhor, o Deus do rei, meu senhor, o confirme.37 Assim como o Senhor esteve com o rei, meu senhor, também esteja ele com Salomão para que ele tenha um reinado ainda mais glorioso do que o meu senhor, o rei Davi! "38 Então o sacerdote Zadoque, o profeta Natã, Benaia, filho de Joiada, os queretitas e os peletitas fizeram Salomão montar a mula do rei Davi e o escoltaram até Giom.39 O sacerdote Zadoque pegou na Tenda o chifre com óleo e ungiu Salomão. Então tocaram a trombeta e todo o povo gritou: "Viva o rei Salomão! "40 E todo o povo o acompanhou, tocando flautas e comemorando, de tal forma que o chão tremia com o barulho.41 Adonias e todos os seus convidados souberam disso quando estavam terminando o banquete. Ao ouvir o toque da trombeta, Joabe perguntou: "O que significa esta gritaria, esse alvoroço na cidade? "42 Falava ele ainda, quando chegou Jônatas, filho do sacerdote Abiatar. E Adonias lhe disse: "Entre, pois um homem digno como você deve estar trazendo boas notícias! "43 "De modo algum", respondeu Jônatas a Adonias. "Davi, o nosso rei e senhor, constituiu rei a Salomão.44 O rei enviou com ele o sacerdote Zadoque, o profeta Natã, Benaia, filho de Joiada, os queretitas e os peletitas, e eles o fizeram montar a mula do rei.45 Depois o sacerdote Zadoque e o profeta Natã o ungiram rei em Giom. De lá eles saíram comemorando, e a cidade está alvoroçada. É esse o barulho que vocês ouvem.46 Além disso, Salomão já se assentou no trono real.47 Até mesmo os oficiais do rei foram cumprimentar Davi, o nosso rei e senhor, dizendo: ‘Que o teu Deus torne o nome de Salomão mais famoso que o teu, e o seu reinado mais glorioso do que o teu! ’ E o rei curvou-se reverentemente em sua cama,48 e disse: ‘Bendito seja o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, que permitiu que os meus olhos vissem hoje um sucessor em meu trono’ ".49 Diante disso, todos os convidados de Adonias entraram em pânico e se dispersaram.50 Mas Adonias, com medo de Salomão, foi agarrar-se às pontas do altar.51 Então informaram a Salomão: "Adonias está com medo do rei Salomão e está agarrado às pontas do altar. Ele diz: ‘Que o rei Salomão me jure que não matará o seu servo pela espada’ ".52 Salomão respondeu: "Se ele se mostrar confiável, não cairá nem um só fio de cabelo da sua cabeça; mas se nele se descobrir alguma maldade, ele morrerá".53 Então o rei enviou alguns soldados, e eles o fizeram descer do altar. E Adonias veio e se curvou solenemente perante o rei Salomão, que lhe disse: "Vá para casa".
