1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah began to reign over Judah.2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.3 And Abijah joined battle with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: and Jeroboam set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, who were mighty men of valor.4 And Abijah stood up on mount Zemaraim, which is in the hill-country of Ephraim, and said, Hear me, O Jeroboam and all Israel:5 Don't you{+} know that Yahweh, the God of Israel, gave the kingdom over Israel to David forever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?6 Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the slave of Solomon the son of David, rose up, and rebelled against his lord.7 And there were gathered to him worthless men, base fellows, that strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them.8 And now you{+} think to withstand the kingdom of Yahweh in the hand of the sons of David; and you{+} are a great multitude, and there are with you{+} the golden calves which Jeroboam made you{+} for gods.9 Haven't you{+} driven out the priests of Yahweh, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made for yourselves priests after the manner of the peoples of [other] lands? So that whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams, the same may be a priest of [those that are] no gods.10 But as for us, Yahweh is our God, and we haven't forsaken him; and [we have] priests ministering to Yahweh, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites in their work:11 and they burn to Yahweh every morning and every evening burnt-offerings and sweet incense: the showbread also [they set] in order on the pure table; and the lampstand of gold with its lamps, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of Yahweh our God; but you{+} have forsaken him.12 And, look, God is with us at our head, and his priests with the trumpets of alarm to sound an alarm against you{+}. O sons of Israel, don't fight{+} against Yahweh, the God of your{+} fathers; for you{+} will not prosper.13 But Jeroboam caused an ambush to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambush was behind them.14 And when Judah looked back, and saw that the battle was before and behind them; and they cried to Yahweh, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.15 Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God struck Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.16 And the sons of Israel fled before Judah; and God delivered them into their hand.17 And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.18 Thus the sons of Israel were brought under at that time, and the sons of Judah prevailed, because they relied on Yahweh, the God of their fathers.19 And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Beth-el with its towns, and Jeshanah with its towns, and Ephron with its towns.20 Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and Yahweh struck him, and he died.21 But Abijah waxed mighty, and took to himself fourteen wives, and begot twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters.22 And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the commentary of the prophet Iddo.

1 No décimo oitavo ano do reinado de Jeroboão, Abias tornou-se rei de Judá,2 e reinou três anos em Jerusalém. O nome de sua mãe era Maaca, filha de Uriel, de Gibeá. E houve guerra entre Abias e Jeroboão.3 Abias entrou em combate levando uma força de quatrocentos mil excelentes guerreiros, e Jeroboão foi enfrentá-lo com oitocentos mil excelentes guerreiros.4 Abias subiu o monte Zemaraim, nos montes de Efraim, e gritou: "Jeroboão e todo o Israel, ouçam-me!5 Vocês não sabem que o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, deu para sempre o reino de Israel a Davi e a seus descendentes mediante uma aliança irrevogável?6 Mesmo assim, Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, servo de Salomão, filho de Davi, rebelou-se contra o seu senhor.7 Alguns homens vadios e imprestáveis juntaram-se a ele e se opuseram a Roboão, filho de Salomão, quando ainda era jovem, indeciso e incapaz de oferecer-lhes resistência.8 "E agora vocês pretendem resistir ao reino do Senhor, que está nas mãos dos descendentes de Davi. Vocês são de fato uma multidão imensa e têm os bezerros de ouro que Jeroboão fez para serem os seus deuses.9 Mas, não foram vocês que expulsaram os sacerdotes do Senhor, os descendentes de Arão, e os levitas, e escolheram os seus próprios sacerdotes, como fazem os outros povos? Quem quer que se consagre com um novilho e sete carneiros pode tornar-se sacerdote daqueles que não são deuses.10 "Quanto a nós, o Senhor é o nosso Deus, e não o abandonamos. Os nossos sacerdotes, que servem ao Senhor auxiliados pelos levitas, são descendentes de Arão.11 Todas as manhãs e todas as tardes eles apresentam holocaustos e incenso aromático ao Senhor, arrumam os pães sobre a mesa cerimonialmente pura e todas as tardes acendem as lâmpadas do candelabro de ouro. Pois nós observamos as exigências do Senhor, o nosso Deus, enquanto que vocês o abandonaram.12 E vejam bem! Deus está conosco; ele é o nosso chefe. Os sacerdotes dele, com suas cornetas, farão soar o grito de guerra contra vocês. Israelitas, não lutem contra o Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados, pois vocês não terão êxito! "13 Enquanto isso, Jeroboão tinha mandado tropas para a retaguarda do exército de Judá, de forma que ele estava em frente de Judá e a emboscada estava atrás.14 Quando o exército de Judá virou-se e viu que estava sendo atacado pela frente e pela retaguarda, clamou ao Senhor. Os sacerdotes tocaram suas cornetas,15 e os homens de Judá deram o grito de guerra. Ao som do grito de guerra, Deus derrotou Jeroboão e todo o Israel diante de Abias e de Judá.16 Os israelitas fugiram dos soldados de Judá, e Deus os entregou nas mãos deles.17 Abias e os seus soldados lhes infligiram grande derrota; quinhentos mil excelentes guerreiros de Israel foram mortos.18 Os israelitas foram subjugados naquela ocasião, e os homens de Judá tiveram força para vencer, pois confiaram no Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados.19 Abias perseguiu Jeroboão e tomou-lhe as cidades de Betel, Jesana e Efrom, com os seus povoados ao redor.20 Durante o reinado de Abias, Jeroboão não recuperou o seu poder; até que o Senhor o feriu, e ele morreu.21 Abias, ao contrário, fortaleceu-se. Ele se casou com catorze mulheres e teve vinte e dois filhos e dezesseis filhas.22 Os demais acontecimentos do reinado de Abias, o que ele fez e o que disse, estão escritos nos relatos do profeta Ido.
