1 After these things, and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to win them for himself.2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib came, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,3 he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were outside the city; and they helped him.4 So many people were gathered together, and they stopped all the fountains, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?5 And he took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised up the towers, and the other wall outside, and strengthened Millo [in] the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance.6 And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the broad place at the gate of the city, and spoke comfortably to them, saying,7 Be strong and of good courage, don't be afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him; for there is a greater with us than with him:8 with him is an arm of flesh; but with us is Yahweh our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.9 After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his slaves to Jerusalem, (now he was before Lachish, and all his power with him,) to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah who were at Jerusalem, saying,10 Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, On what do you{+} trust, that you{+} remain in the siege in Jerusalem?11 Does not Hezekiah persuade you{+}, to give you{+} over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, Yahweh our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?12 Has not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, You{+} will worship before one altar, and on it will you{+} burn incense?13 Don't you{+} know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands in any wise able to deliver their land out of my hand?14 Who was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers completely destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your{+} God should be able to deliver you{+} out of my hand?15 Now therefore don't let Hezekiah deceive you{+}, nor persuade you{+} after this manner, neither believe{+} him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less will your{+} God deliver you{+} out of my hand?16 And his slaves spoke yet more against Yahweh God, and against his slave Hezekiah.17 He also wrote letters, to rail on Yahweh, the God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so will the God of Hezekiah not deliver his people out of my hand.18 And they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.19 And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of man's hands.20 And Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, prayed because of this, and cried to heaven.21 And Yahweh sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he came into the house of his god, those who came forth from inside him slew him there with the sword.22 Thus Yahweh saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all [others], and he gave them rest on every side.23 And many brought gifts to Yahweh to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah; so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from then on.24 In those days Hezekiah was sick even to death: and he prayed to Yahweh; and he spoke to him, and gave him a sign.25 But Hezekiah did not render again according to the benefit done to him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath on him, and on Judah and Jerusalem.26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of Yahweh didn't come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.27 And Hezekiah had exceedingly much riches and honor: and he provided for himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of goodly vessels;28 storehouses also for the increase of grain and new wine and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and flocks for the folds.29 Moreover he provided for himself cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very much substance.30 This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.31 Nevertheless in [the business of] the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.32 Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, look, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the tombs of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem honored him at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.

1 Depois de tudo o que Ezequias fez com tanta fidelidade, Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, invadiu Judá. Ele sitiou as cidades fortificadas para conquistá-las.2 Quando Ezequias viu que Senaqueribe pretendia guerrear contra Jerusalém,3 consultou os seus oficiais e os comandantes do exército sobre a idéia de mandar fechar a passagem de água das fontes do lado de fora da cidade; e eles concordaram.4 Assim, ajuntaram-se muitos homens, e fecharam todas as fontes e o riacho que atravessava a região. Eles diziam: "Por que deixar que os reis da Assíria venham e encontrem toda essa água? "5 Depois, com grande empenho consertou todos os trechos quebrados do muro e construiu torres sobre ele. Construiu outro muro do lado de fora do primeiro e reforçou os muros de arrimo da cidade de Davi; e mandou fazer também muitas lanças e muitos escudos.6 Nomeou sobre o povo oficiais militares e os reuniu na praça, junto à porta da cidade, animando-os com estas palavras:7 "Sejam fortes e corajosos. Não tenham medo nem se desanimem por causa do rei da Assíria e do enorme exército que está com ele, pois conosco está um poder maior do que o que está com ele.8 Com ele está somente o poder humano, mas conosco está o Senhor, o nosso Deus, para nos ajudar e para travar as nossas batalhas". E o povo ganhou confiança com o que disse Ezequias, rei de Judá.9 Mais tarde, quando Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, e todas as suas forças estavam sitiando Láquis, mandou oficiais a Jerusalém com a seguinte mensagem a Ezequias e a todo o povo de Judá que morava lá:10 "Assim diz Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria: Em que vocês baseiam a sua confiança, para permanecerem cercados em Jerusalém?11 Quando Ezequias diz: ‘O Senhor, o nosso Deus, nos salvará das mãos do rei da Assíria’, ele os está enganando, para deixá-los morrer de fome e de sede.12 Mas não foi o próprio Ezequias que retirou os altares desse deus, dizendo a Judá e a Jerusalém: ‘Vocês devem adorar diante de um só altar e sobre ele queimar incenso’? "13 "Vocês não sabem o que eu e os meus antepassados fizemos a todos os povos das outras terras? Acaso alguma vez os deuses daquelas nações conseguiram livrar das minhas mãos a terra deles?14 De todos os deuses das nações que os meus antepassados destruíram, qual deles conseguiu salvar o seu povo de mim? Como então o deus de vocês poderá livrá-los das minhas mãos?15 Portanto, não deixem Ezequias enganá-los ou iludi-los dessa maneira. Não acreditem nele, pois nenhum deus de qualquer nação ou reino jamais conseguiu livrar o seu povo das minhas mãos ou das mãos de meus antepassados. Muito menos o deus de vocês conseguirá livrá-los das minhas mãos! "16 Os oficiais de Senaqueribe desafiaram ainda mais a Deus, ao Senhor, e ao seu servo Ezequias.17 Senaqueribe também escreveu cartas insultando o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, e o desafiando: "Assim como os deuses dos povos das outras terras não livraram o povo deles das minhas mãos, também o deus de Ezequias não livrará o seu povo das minhas mãos".18 Então os oficiais gritaram na língua dos judeus ao povo de Jerusalém que estava sobre o muro, para assustá-lo e amedrontá-lo, com o intuito de conquistarem a cidade.19 Referiram-se ao Deus de Jerusalém como falavam dos deuses dos outros povos da terra, que não passam de obra das mãos dos homens.20 Por tudo isso o rei Ezequias e o profeta Isaías, filho de Amoz, clamaram em oração aos céus.21 E o Senhor enviou um anjo, que matou todos os homens de combate e todos os líderes e oficiais no acampamento do rei assírio, de forma que este se retirou envergonhado para a sua terra. E certo dia, ao adentrar o templo do seu deus, alguns dos seus filhos o mataram à espada.22 Assim o Senhor salvou Ezequias e o povo de Jerusalém das mãos de Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, e das mãos de todos os outros; e cuidou deles em todas as fronteiras.23 Muitos levaram a Jerusalém ofertas para o Senhor e presentes valiosos para Ezequias, rei de Judá. Daquela ocasião em diante ele foi muito respeitado por todas as nações.24 Naquele tempo Ezequias ficou doente, e quase morreu. Ele orou ao Senhor, que lhe respondeu dando-lhe um sinal miraculoso.25 Mas Ezequias tornou-se orgulhoso, e não correspondeu à bondade com que foi tratado; por isso a ira do Senhor veio sobre ele, sobre Judá e sobre Jerusalém.26 Então Ezequias humilhou-se reconhecendo o seu orgulho, como também o povo de Jerusalém; por isso a ira do Senhor não veio sobre eles durante o reinado de Ezequias.27 Possuía Ezequias muitíssimas riquezas e glória; construiu depósitos para guardar prata, ouro, pedras preciosas, especiarias, escudos e todo tipo de objetos de valor.28 Também construiu armazéns para estocar trigo, vinho e azeite; fez ainda estábulos para os seus diversos rebanhos e para as ovelhas.29 Construiu cidades e adquiriu muitos rebanhos, pois Deus lhe dera muitas riquezas.30 Foi Ezequias que bloqueou o manancial superior da fonte de Giom e, canalizou a água para a parte oeste da cidade de Davi. Ele foi bem sucedido em tudo o que se propôs a fazer.31 Mas, quando os governantes da Babilônia enviaram uma delegação para perguntar-lhe acerca do sinal miraculoso que havia ocorrido no país, Deus o deixou, para prová-lo e para saber tudo o que havia em seu coração.32 Os demais acontecimentos do reinado de Ezequias e os seus atos piedosos, estão escritos na visão do profeta Isaías, filho de Amoz, no livro dos reis de Judá e de Israel.33 Ezequias descansou com os seus antepassados e foi sepultado na colina onde estão os túmulos dos descendentes de Davi. Todo o Judá e o povo de Jerusalém prestaram-lhe homenagens por ocasião da sua morte. E o seu filho Manassés foi o seu sucessor.
