1 And after five days the high priest Ananias came down with certain elders, and [with] an orator, one Tertullus; and they informed the governor against Paul.2 And when he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by you we enjoy much peace, and that by the providence evils are corrected for this nation,3 we accept it in all ways and in all places, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness.4 But, that I not be further tedious to you, I entreat you to hear us of your clemency a few words.5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:6 who moreover assayed to profane the temple: on whom also we laid hold:7 []8 from whom you will be able, by examining him yourself, to take knowledge of all these things of which we accuse him.9 And the Jews also joined in the charge, affirming that these things were so.10 And when the governor had beckoned to him to speak, Paul answered, Since I know that you have been of many years a judge to this nation, I cheerfully make my defense:11 Seeing that you can take knowledge that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Jerusalem:12 and neither in the temple did they find me disputing with any man or stirring up a crowd, nor in the synagogues, nor in the city.13 Neither can they prove to you the things of which they now accuse me.14 But this I confess to you, that after the Way which they call a sect, so I serve the God of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the law, and which are written in the prophets;15 having hope toward God, which these also themselves look for, that there will be a resurrection both of the just and unjust.16 In this I also exercise myself to have a conscience void of offense toward God and men always.17 Now after some years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings:18 amid which they found me purified in the temple, with no crowd, nor yet with tumult:19 but [there were] certain Jews from Asia, who ought to have been here before you, and to make accusation, if they had anything against me.20 Otherwise let these men themselves say what wrongdoing they found when I stood before the Sanhedrin,21 except it is for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Concerning the resurrection of the dead I am called in question before you{+} this day.22 But Felix, having more exact knowledge concerning the Way, deferred them, saying, When Colonel Lysias will come down, I will determine your{+} matter.23 And he gave order to the captain that he should be kept in charge, and should have indulgence; and not to forbid any of his friends to serve him.24 But after some days, Felix came with Drusilla, his wife, who was Jewish, and sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ Jesus.25 And as he reasoned of righteousness, and self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was terrified, and answered, Go your way for this time; and when I have a convenient season, I will call you to me.26 He hoped as well that money would be given him of Paul: therefore also he sent for him the more often, and communed with him.27 But when two years were fulfilled, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus; and desiring to gain favor with the Jews, Felix left Paul in bonds.

1 Cinco dias depois, o sumo sacerdote Ananias desceu a Cesaréia com alguns dos líderes dos judeus e um advogado chamado Tértulo, os quais apresentaram ao governador suas acusações contra Paulo.2 Quando Paulo foi chamado, Tértulo apresentou sua causa a Félix: "Temos desfrutado de um longo período de paz durante o teu governo, e o teu providente cuidado resultou em reformas nesta nação.3 Em tudo e em toda parte, excelentíssimo Félix, reconhecemos estes benefícios com profunda gratidão.4 Todavia, a fim de não tomar-te mais tempo, peço-te o favor de ouvir-nos apenas por um pouco.5 "Verificamos que este homem é um perturbador, que promove tumultos entre os judeus pelo mundo todo. Ele é o principal cabeça da seita dos nazarenos6 e tentou até mesmo profanar o templo; então o prendemos e quisemos julgá-lo segundo a nossa lei.7 Mas o comandante Lísias interveio, e com muita força o arrebatou de nossas mãos e ordenou que os seus acusadores se apresentassem.8 Se tu mesmo o interrogares, poderás verificar a verdade a respeito de todas estas acusações que estamos fazendo contra ele".9 Os judeus confirmaram a acusação, garantindo que as afirmações eram verdadeiras.10 Quando o governador lhe deu sinal para que falasse, Paulo declarou: "Sei que há muitos anos tens sido juiz nesta nação; por isso, de bom grado faço minha defesa.11 Facilmente poderás verificar que há menos de doze dias subi a Jerusalém para adorar a Deus.12 Meus acusadores não me encontraram discutindo com ninguém no templo, nem incitando uma multidão nas sinagogas ou em qualquer outro lugar na cidade.13 Nem tampouco podem provar-te as acusações que agora estão levantando contra mim.14 Confesso-te, porém, que adoro o Deus dos nossos antepassados como seguidor do Caminho, a que chamam seita. Creio em tudo o que concorda com a Lei e no que está escrito nos Profetas,15 e tenho em Deus a mesma esperança desses homens: de que haverá ressurreição tanto de justos como de injustos.16 Por isso procuro sempre conservar minha consciência limpa diante de Deus e dos homens.17 "Depois de estar ausente por vários anos, vim a Jerusalém para trazer esmolas ao meu povo e apresentar ofertas.18 Enquanto fazia isso, já cerimonialmente puro, encontraram-me no templo, sem envolver-me em nenhum ajuntamento ou tumulto.19 Mas há alguns judeus da província da Ásia que deveriam estar aqui diante de ti e apresentar acusações, se é que têm algo contra mim.20 Ou os que aqui se acham deveriam declarar que crime encontraram em mim quando fui levado perante o Sinédrio,21 a não ser que tenha sido este: quando me apresentei a eles, bradei: Por causa da ressurreição dos mortos estou sendo julgado hoje diante de vocês".22 Então Félix, que tinha bom conhecimento do Caminho, adiou a causa e disse: "Quando chegar o comandante Lísias, decidirei o caso de vocês".23 E ordenou ao centurião que mantivesse Paulo sob custódia, mas que lhe desse certa liberdade e permitisse que os seus amigos o servissem.24 Vários dias depois, Félix veio com Drusila sua mulher, que era judia, mandou chamar Paulo e o ouviu falar sobre a fé em Cristo Jesus.25 Quando Paulo se pôs a discorrer acerca da justiça, do domínio próprio e do juízo vindouro, Félix teve medo e disse: "Basta, por enquanto! Pode sair. Quando achar conveniente, mandarei chamá-lo de novo".26 Ao mesmo tempo esperava que Paulo lhe oferecesse algum dinheiro, pelo que mandava buscá-lo freqüentemente e conversava com ele.27 Passados dois anos, Félix foi sucedido por Pórcio Festo; todavia, porque desejava manter a simpatia dos judeus, Félix deixou Paulo na prisão.
