1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered, and said,2 If one assay to commune with you, will you be grieved? But who can withhold himself from speaking?3 Look, you have instructed many, And you have strengthened the weak hands.4 Your words have upheld him who was falling, And you have made firm the feeble knees.5 But now it has come to you, and you faint; It touches you, and you are troubled.6 Isn't your fear [of God] your confidence, [And] the integrity of your ways your hope?7 Remember, I pray you, who [ever] perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?8 According to as I have seen, those who plow iniquity, And sow trouble, reap the same.9 By the breath of God they perish, And by the blast of his anger are they consumed.10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, And the teeth of the young lions, are broken.11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, And the whelps of the lioness are scattered abroad.12 Now a thing was secretly brought to me, And my ear received a whisper of it.13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, When deep sleep falls on men,14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, Which made all my bones to shake.15 Then a spirit passed before my face; The hair of my flesh stood up.16 It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance; A form was before my eyes: [There was] silence, and I heard a voice [saying],17 Will common man be more just than God? Will [noble] man be more pure than his Maker?18 Look, he puts no trust in his slaves; And his angels he charges with folly:19 How much more those who stay in houses of clay, Whose foundation is in the dust, Who are crushed before the moth!20 Between morning and evening they are destroyed: They perish forever without any regarding it.21 Isn't their tent-cord plucked up inside them? They die, and that without wisdom.

1 Então respondeu Elifaz, de Temã:2 "Se alguém se aventurar a dizer-lhe uma palavra, você ficará impaciente? Mas quem pode refrear as palavras?3 Pense bem! Você ensinou a tantos; fortaleceu mãos fracas.4 Suas palavras davam firmeza aos que tropeçavam; você fortaleceu joelhos vacilantes.5 Mas agora que se vê em dificuldade, você se desanima; quando você é atingido, fica prostrado.6 Sua vida piedosa não lhe inspira confiança, e o seu procedimento irrepreensível não lhe dá esperança?7 "Reflita agora: Qual foi o inocente que chegou a perecer? Onde foi que os íntegros sofreram destruição?8 Pelo que tenho observado, quem cultiva o mal e semeia maldade, isso também colherá.9 Pelo sopro de Deus são destruídos; pelo vento de sua ira eles perecem.10 Os leões podem rugir e rosnar, mas até os dentes dos leões fortes se quebram.11 O leão morre por falta de presa, e os filhotes da leoa se dispersam.12 "Disseram-me uma palavra em segredo, da qual os meus ouvidos captaram um murmúrio.13 Em meio a sonhos perturbadores da noite, quando cai sono profundo sobre os homens,14 temor e tremor se apoderaram de mim e fizeram estremecer todos os meus ossos.15 Um espírito roçou o meu rosto, e os pêlos do meu corpo se arrepiaram.16 Ele parou, mas não pude identificá-lo. Um vulto se pôs diante dos meus olhos, e ouvi uma voz suave, que dizia:17 ‘Poderá algum mortal ser mais justo que Deus? Poderá algum homem ser mais puro que o seu Criador?18 Se Deus não confia em seus servos, se vê erro em seus anjos e os acusa,19 quanto mais nos que moram em casas de barro, cujos alicerces estão no pó! São mais facilmente esmagados que uma traça!20 Entre o alvorecer e o crepúsculo são despedaçados; perecem para sempre, sem sequer serem notados.21 Não é certo que as cordas de suas tendas são arrancadas, e eles morrem sem sabedoria? ’
