1 Ainda que eu falasse as línguas dos homens e dos anjos, se não tiver caridade, sou como o bronze que soa, ou como o címbalo que retine.2 Mesmo que eu tivesse o dom da profecia, e conhecesse todos os mistérios e toda a ciência; mesmo que tivesse toda a fé, a ponto de transportar montanhas, se não tiver caridade, não sou nada.3 Ainda que distribuísse todos os meus bens em sustento dos pobres, e ainda que entregasse o meu corpo para ser queimado, se não tiver caridade, de nada valeria!4 A caridade é paciente, a caridade é bondosa. Não tem inveja. A caridade não é orgulhosa. Não é arrogante.5 Nem escandalosa. Não busca os seus próprios interesses, não se irrita, não guarda rancor.6 Não se alegra com a injustiça, mas se rejubila com a verdade.7 Tudo desculpa, tudo crê, tudo espera, tudo suporta.8 A caridade jamais acabará. As profecias desaparecerão, o dom das línguas cessará, o dom da ciência findará.9 A nossa ciência é parcial, a nossa profecia é imperfeita.10 Quando chegar o que é perfeito, o imperfeito desaparecerá.11 Quando eu era criança, falava como criança, pensava como criança, raciocinava como criança. Desde que me tornei homem, eliminei as coisas de criança.12 Hoje vemos como por um espelho, confusamente; mas então veremos face a face. Hoje conheço em parte; mas então conhecerei totalmente, como eu sou conhecido.13 Por ora subsistem a fé, a esperança e a caridade - as três. Porém, a maior delas é a caridade.

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity, I am become [as] sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal.2 And though I have [the gift of] prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed [the poor] and though I give my body to be burned and have not charity, it profits me nothing.4 Charity suffers long [and] is benign; charity envies not; charity does [nothing] without due reason, is not puffed up,5 is not injurious, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil,6 rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.8 Charity is never lost, but prophecies shall come to an end, tongues shall cease, and knowledge shall come to an end.9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.12 For now we see as through a mirror, in darkness, but then [we shall see] face to face; now I know in part, but then I shall know even as I also am known.13 And now abide faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these [is] charity.:
