1 O que era desde o princípio, o que temos ouvido, o que temos visto com os nossos olhos, o que temos contemplado e as nossas mãos têm apalpado no tocante ao Verbo da vida -2 porque a vida se manifestou, e nós a temos visto; damos testemunho e vos anunciamos a vida eterna, que estava no Pai e que se nos manifestou -,3 o que vimos e ouvimos nós vos anunciamos, para que também vós tenhais comunhão conosco. Ora, a nossa comunhão é com o Pai e com o seu Filho Jesus Cristo.4 Escrevemo-vos estas coisas para que a vossa alegria seja completa.5 A nova que dele temos ouvido e vos anunciamos é esta: Deus é luz e nele não há treva alguma.6 Se dizemos ter comunhão com ele, mas andamos nas trevas, mentimos e não seguimos a verdade.7 Se, porém, andamos na luz como ele mesmo está na luz, temos comunhão recíproca uns com os outros, e o sangue de Jesus Cristo, seu Filho, nos purifica de todo pecado.8 Se dizemos que não temos pecado, enganamo-nos a nós mesmos, e a verdade não está em nós.9 Se reconhecemos os nossos pecados, {Deus aí está} fiel e justo para nos perdoar os pecados e para nos purificar de toda iniqüidade.10 Se pensamos não ter pecado, nós o declaramos mentiroso e a sua palavra não está em nós.

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life2 (for the life is manifested, and we also saw [it] and bear witness and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father and appeared unto us);3 that which we have seen and heard we declare unto you, that ye also may have communion with us; and truly our communion [is] with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be fulfilled.5 This then is the promise which we have heard of him and declare unto you, That God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.6 If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth;7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have communion with him in the midst of us, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son cleanses us from all sin.8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is no truth in us.9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.:
