1 Caríssimos, não deis fé a qualquer espírito, mas examinai se os espíritos são de Deus, porque muitos falsos profetas se levantaram no mundo.2 Nisto se reconhece o Espírito de Deus: todo espírito que proclama que Jesus Cristo se encarnou é de Deus;3 todo espírito que não proclama Jesus esse não é de Deus, mas é o espírito do Anticristo de cuja vinda tendes ouvido, e já está agora no mundo.4 Vós, filhinhos, sois de Deus, e os vencestes, porque o que está em vós é maior do que aquele que está no mundo.5 Eles são do mundo. É por isto que falam segundo o mundo, e o mundo os ouve.6 Nós, porém, somos de Deus. Quem conhece a Deus, ouve-nos; quem não é de Deus, não nos ouve. É nisto que conhecemos o Espírito da Verdade e o espírito do erro.7 Caríssimos, amemo-nos uns aos outros, porque o amor vem de Deus, e todo o que ama é nascido de Deus e conhece a Deus.8 Aquele que não ama não conhece a Deus, porque Deus é amor.9 Nisto se manifestou o amor de Deus para conosco: em nos ter enviado ao mundo o seu Filho único, para que vivamos por ele.10 Nisto consiste o amor: não em termos nós amado a Deus, mas em ter-nos ele amado, e enviado o seu Filho para expiar os nossos pecados.11 Caríssimos, se Deus assim nos amou, também nós nos devemos amar uns aos outros.12 Ninguém jamais viu a Deus. Se nos amarmos mutuamente, Deus permanece em nós e o seu amor em nós é perfeito.13 Nisto é que conhecemos que estamos nele e ele em nós, por ele nos ter dado o seu Espírito.14 E nós vimos e testemunhamos que o Pai enviou seu Filho como Salvador do mundo.15 Todo aquele que proclama que Jesus é o Filho de Deus, Deus permanece nele e ele em Deus.16 Nós conhecemos e cremos no amor que Deus tem para conosco. Deus é amor, e quem permanece no amor permanece em Deus e Deus nele.17 Nisto é perfeito em nós o amor: que tenhamos confiança no dia do julgamento, pois, como ele é, assim também nós o somos neste mundo.18 No amor não há temor. Antes, o perfeito amor lança fora o temor, porque o temor envolve castigo, e quem teme não é perfeito no amor.19 Mas amamos, porque Deus nos amou primeiro.20 Se alguém disser: Amo a Deus, mas odeia seu irmão, é mentiroso. Porque aquele que não ama seu irmão, a quem vê, é incapaz de amar a Deus, a quem não vê.21 Temos de Deus este mandamento: o que amar a Deus, ame também a seu irmão.

1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world.2 In this know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ, is come in flesh is of God:3 And every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ, is come in flesh is not of God: and this is that [spirit] of antichrist, of which ye have heard that it should come, and that now it is already in the world.4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.5 They are of the world; therefore, they speak of the world, and the world hears them.6 We are of God; he that knows God hears us; he that is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.7 Beloved, let us love one another, for charity is of God. Anyone that loves is born of God and knows God.8 He that does not love does not know God, for God is charity.9 In this was the charity of God demonstrated in us, in that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.10 In this does the charity consist, not because we had loved God, but because he loved us and has sent his Son [to be] the reconciliation for our sins.11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and his charity is completed in us.13 In this we know that we abide in him, and he in us, in that he has given us of his Spirit.14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son [to be] the Saviour of the world.15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.16 And we have known and believed the charity that God has in us. God is charity, and he that abides in charity abides in God, and God in him.17 In this the charity with us is made perfect, that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, that as he is, so are we in this world.18 In charity there is no fear; but charity that is perfect casts out fear; because fear has torment; from which he that fears is not complete in charity.19 We love him, because he first loved us.20 If anyone says, I love God and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he that does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?21 And we have this commandment from him, That he who loves God loves his brother also.:
