1 Acima de tudo, recomendo que se façam preces, orações, súplicas, ações de graças por todos os homens,2 pelos reis e por todos os que estão constituídos em autoridade, para que possamos viver uma vida calma e tranqüila, com toda a piedade e honestidade.3 Isto é bom e agradável diante de Deus, nosso Salvador,4 o qual deseja que todos os homens se salvem e cheguem ao conhecimento da verdade.5 Porque há um só Deus e há um só mediador entre Deus e os homens: Jesus Cristo, homem6 que se entregou como resgate por todos. Tal é o fato, atestado em seu tempo;7 e deste fato - digo a verdade, não minto - fui constituído pregador, apóstolo e doutor dos gentios, na fé e na verdade.8 Quero, pois, que os homens orem em todo lugar, levantando as mãos puras, superando todo ódio e ressentimento.9 Do mesmo modo, quero que as mulheres usem traje honesto, ataviando-se com modéstia e sobriedade. Seus enfeites consistam não em primorosos penteados, ouro, pérolas, vestidos de luxo,10 e sim em boas obras, como convém a mulheres que professam a piedade.11 A mulher ouça a instrução em silêncio, com espírito de submissão.12 Não permito à mulher que ensine nem que se arrogue autoridade sobre o homem, mas permaneça em silêncio.13 Pois o primeiro a ser criado foi Adão, depois Eva.14 E não foi Adão que se deixou iludir, e sim a mulher que, enganada, se tornou culpada de transgressão.15 Contudo, ela poderá salvar-se, cumprindo os deveres de mãe, contanto que permaneça com modéstia na fé, na caridade e na santidade.

1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, [and] giving of thanks, be made for all men,2 for kings, and [for] all that are in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and integrity.3 For this [is] good and pleasing in the sight of God our Saviour,4 who desires that all men be saved and come unto the knowledge of the truth.5 For [there is only] one God and likewise [only] one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,6 who gave himself in ransom for all, the testimony of which [was confirmed] at the time,7 of which I am ordained a preacher and an apostle (I speak the truth in Christ [and] do not lie), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.8 I desire, therefore, that the men in every place, pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and strife.9 In like manner also that the women adorn themselves in an honest manner, with shyness and modesty, not with ostentatious hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing10 but with good works (as becomes women professing godliness).11 Let the woman learn, becoming silent in all subjection.12 For I do not allow a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over a [mature] man, but to be at rest.13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived in the rebellion;15 notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if she continues in faith and charity and sanctification and modesty.:
