1 E foram dizer a Joab: Eis que o rei chora e se lamenta por causa de Absalão.2 E a vitória se transformou em luto naquele dia para todo o exército, porque o povo ouvira dizer que o rei estava acabrunhado de dor por causa de seu filho.3 Por isso, o exército entrou na cidade em silêncio, como faria um exército coberto de vergonha por ter fugido ao combate.4 Entretanto o rei, cobrindo a cabeça, dizia em alta voz: Meu filho Absalão! Absalão, meu filho, meu filho!5 Veio então Joab à casa do rei, e disse-lhe: Tu cobres hoje de confusão a face de todos os teus servos que salvaram a tua vida, a vida de teus filhos e filhas, de tuas mulheres e concubinas.6 Tu amas os que te odeiam e odeias os que te amam, e mostras que os teus chefes e teus servos nada valem para ti. Estou vendo que te darias por satisfeito, se Absalão vivesse e nós fôssemos todos mortos!7 Vamos: sai e dirige aos teus servos palavras de reconforto, pois juro-te por Deus que, se não o fizeres, não ficará contigo esta noite homem algum. E isso seria para ti uma desgraça maior do que todas que vieram sobre ti desde a tua juventude!8 Então levantou-se o rei e foi sentar-se à porta. Foi avisado a todo o exército: Eis que o rei está sentado à porta. E todo o exército veio apresentar-se a ele. Os israelitas tinham fugido cada qual para a sua casa.9 Em todas as tribos se discutia, dizendo: O rei que nos salvara das mãos de nossos inimigos e da mão dos filisteus, agora teve de fugir da terra diante de Absalão.10 Ora, Absalão, a quem tínhamos sagrado rei sobre nós, morreu no combate. Por que tardais em fazer voltar o rei?11 O rei Davi mandou aos sacerdotes Sadoc e Abiatar a seguinte mensagem: Eis o que direis aos anciãos de Judá: Por que seríeis vós os últimos a reconduzir o rei para a sua casa? E chegou aos ouvidos do rei o que se dizia em todo o Israel.12 Vós sois meus irmãos, meus ossos e minha carne. Por que seríeis vós os últimos a reconduzir o rei?13 Direis em seguida a Amasa: Tu és meu osso e minha carne. Que Deus me trate com todo o rigor, se eu não te tornar para sempre o meu general em lugar de Joab.14 Todos os homens de Judá sentiram unanimemente o seu coração voltar-se para o rei, e mandaram-lhe dizer: Volta com todos os teus!15 O rei voltou. Chegando ao Jordão, eis que todo o Judá tinha acorrido a Gálgala para ir-lhe ao encontro e fazê-lo passar o Jordão.16 Semei, filho de Gera, o benjaminita de Baurim, com seus quinze filhos e os vinte servos, apressou-se a vir ao encontro do rei Davi.17 Levava consigo mil homens de Benjamim, assim como Siba, servo da família de Saul, com seus quinze filhos e vinte servos. E correram rumo ao Jordão antes do rei,18 e dispuseram tudo para fazer passar a família do rei e prestar-lhe todos os serviços que desejassem. Semei, filho de Gera, atirou-se aos pés do rei no momento em que ele ia passar o Jordão19 e disse-lhe: Que o meu senhor não me impute culpa, nem guarde em seu coração a lembrança do crime que cometeu o teu servo no dia em que o rei, meu senhor, deixou Jerusalém.20 Teu servo reconhece o seu pecado, e por isso vim hoje, o primeiro de toda a casa de José, ao encontro do rei, meu senhor!21 Abisai, filho de Sarvia, tomou a palavra: Não se deverá antes matar Semei, por ter amaldiçoado o ungido do Senhor?22 Que eu tenho convosco, ó filhos de Sarvia, respondeu Davi; para que vos comporteis no dia de hoje como meus inimigos? Porventura um só israelita há de ser morto num dia como o de hoje? Ignoro acaso que sou agora rei de Israel?23 E disse a Semei: Não morrerás! E prometeu-lho com juramento.24 Mifiboset, filho de Saul, desceu também ao encontro do rei. Não tinha lavado os pés nem as mãos, nem feito a barba, nem lavado as suas vestes, desde o dia em que o rei partira até o dia em que ele voltou em paz.25 Quando, pois, chegou de Jerusalém vindo ao encontro do rei, Davi disse-lhe: Por que não partiste comigo, Mifiboset?26 Meu senhor e rei, respondeu ele, o meu criado enganou-me. Pois eu, teu servo, dissera-lhe que me selasse a jumenta para que eu a montasse e partisse com o rei, porque o teu servo é paralítico.27 Ele, porém, caluniou-me junto do rei, meu senhor. Mas o rei, meu senhor, é como um anjo de Deus; faze o que te parecer bom.28 Toda a família de meu pai merecia a morte, diante do meu senhor e rei e, no entanto, admitiste o teu servo entre os que comem à tua mesa. Com que direito posso eu ainda suplicar ao rei?29 Para que tantas palavras?, respondeu o rei. Eu declaro que tu e Siba repartireis os bens.30 Ele pode até mesmo ficar com tudo, replicou Mifiboset, uma vez que o rei, meu senhor, voltou em paz para a sua casa.31 Berzelai, o galaadita, desceu de Rogelim e acompanhou o rei, escoltando-o até o Jordão.32 Era já muito velho, com oitenta anos. Sendo muito rico, abastecera o rei durante todo o tempo que esteve em Maanaim.33 O rei disse-lhe: Vem comigo, e te sustentarei junto de mim em Jerusalém!34 Mas Berzelai disse ao rei: Quantos anos viverei ainda, para que suba com o rei a Jerusalém?35 Tenho agora oitenta anos, e já não distingo entre o bom e o que não o é. Já não posso saborear o que como e o que bebo, e não ouço mais a voz dos cantores e cantoras. Por que iria o teu servo servir de peso ao rei, meu senhor?36 Teu servo só andou um pedaço de caminho com o rei, e por que lhe haveria o rei de dar semelhante recompensa?37 Deixa que teu servo volte, para morrer em minha cidade, junto ao túmulo de meu pai e de minha mãe. Eis, porém, o teu servo Camaão; ele irá com o rei, meu senhor: faze dele o que te parecer melhor.38 Que ele venha comigo, respondeu o rei; far-lhe-ei tudo o que te agradar; e a ti também, conceder-te-ei tudo o que desejares de mim.39 Todos passaram o Jordão diante do rei que permaneceu de pé. Davi beijou Berzelai, abençoou-o, e Berzelai voltou para a sua casa.40 O rei chegou a Gálgala, e Camaão passou com ele. Todo o povo de Judá e a metade do povo de Israel acompanharam o rei.41 E eis que todos os homens de Israel vieram ter com o rei, dizendo-lhe: Por que te tomaram os nossos irmãos, os filhos de Judá, fazendo-te passar o Jordão com toda a tua família, quando são todos os homens de Davi que formam o teu povo?42 Então responderam os filhos de Judá aos israelitas: É que o rei nos é mais próximo. Por que vos irritais com isso? Acaso temos comido algo do rei, ou tirado para. nós algum proveito?43 Mas os homens de Israel responderam aos de Judá: Temos dez partes no rei, além disso somos vossos irmãos mais velhos. Por que nos desprezastes? Não fomos nós os primeiros a tomar a palavra e a mandar chamar o nosso rei? Os homens de Judá falaram mais duramente ainda que os de Israel.

1 And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Absalom.2 And that day the salvation was [turned] into mourning for all the people, for the people heard it said that day how the king was grieved for his son.3 And the people entered by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.4 But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!5 And Joab entering into the house of the king, said unto him, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, who this day have saved thy life and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters and the lives of thy wives and the lives of thy concubines,6 by loving those who hate thee and hating thy friends. For thou hast declared this day that thou dost not regard thy princes nor thy servants. For this day I perceive that if Absalom had lived and we had all died today, [then this would be] right in thine eyes.7 Now, therefore, arise, go forth and speak unto the heart of thy servants, for I swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, not one of them will abide with thee tonight and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that has come upon thee from thy youth until now.8 Then the king arose and sat in the gate. And it was declared unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king sits in the gate. And all the people came before the king, but Israel had fled every man to his tent.9 And all the people were in contention throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines, and now he has fled out of the land for Absalom.10 And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now, therefore, why are ye silent regarding bringing the king back?11 And King David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar, the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why shall ye be the last to bring the king back to his house? Seeing that the word of all Israel has come to the king, [to return him] to his house.12 Ye [are] my brethren, ye [are] my bones and my flesh; why then are ye the last to bring back the king?13 Likewise say ye to Amasa, [Art] thou not of my bone and of my flesh? God do so to me and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the place of Joab.14 And he inclined the heart of all the men of Judah, even as [the heart of] one man, so that they sent [this word] unto the king, Return thou and all thy servants.15 So the king returned and came to the Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over the Jordan.16 And Shimei, the son of Gera, son of Jemini, who [was] of Bahurim, hastened and came down with the men of Judah to meet King David.17 And [there were] a thousand men of Benjamin with him; likewise Ziba, the servant of the house of Saul and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him, who went over the Jordan before the king.18 Then the ferry boat went over to carry over the king's household and to do what he desired. Then Shimei, the son of Gera, fell down before the king, as he was passing the Jordan,19 And said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither retain the memory of the wickedness that thy servant did the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should guard it in his heart.20 For I, thy servant, know that I have sinned; therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.21 But Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this because he cursed the LORD'S anointed?22 Then David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? Shall anyone be put to death today in Israel? Do I not know that I [am] this day king over Israel?23 And the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king swore unto him.24 Mephibosheth, the son of Saul, also came down to meet the king and had neither washed his feet nor trimmed his beard nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came [again] in peace.25 And after he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, the king said unto him, Why didst thou not go with me, Mephibosheth?26 And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me, for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride upon it and go to the king because thy servant [is] lame.27 And he has slandered thy servant unto my lord the king, but my lord the king [is] as an angel of God; do therefore [what is] good in thine eyes.28 For all [of] my father's house were worthy of death before my lord the king; yet thou didst set thy servant among those that eat at thy own table. What righteousness, therefore, have I yet to cry any more unto the king?29 And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more words? I have determined, Thou and Ziba divide the land.30 And Mephibosheth said unto the king, Let him even take it all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come again in peace unto his own house.31 Barzillai, the Gileadite, also came down from Rogelim and went over the Jordan with the king to conduct him over the Jordan.32 Now Barzillai was a very aged man, of eighty years, who had provided the king with sustenance while he was at Mahanaim, for he [was] a very great man.33 And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.34 And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?35 I [am] this day eighty years old, [and] shall I tell the difference between the good and the bad? Shall thy servant enjoy what I eat or what I drink? Shall I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? Why then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?36 Thy servant will go a little way over the Jordan with the king, and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?37 Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in my own city [and be buried] by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king, and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.38 And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do with him that which shall seem good unto thee, and whatever thou shalt ask of me, [that] will I do for thee.39 And all the people went over the Jordan. And when the king had also come over, the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and he returned unto his own place.40 Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him; and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.41 And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah, stolen thee away and have brought the king and his household and all David's men with him, over the Jordan?42 And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king [is] near of kin to us. Why then are ye angry for this matter? Have we eaten anything at the king's cost? Or has he given us any gift?43 Then the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more [right] in David than ye; why then did ye not take us into account? Did we not speak first about bringing back our king? But [in the end] the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.:
