1 Alguns homens, descendo da Judéia, puseram-se a ensinar aos irmãos o seguinte: Se não vos circuncidais, segundo o rito de Moisés, não podeis ser salvos.2 Originou-se então grande discussão de Paulo e Barnabé com eles, e resolveu-se que estes dois, com alguns outros irmãos, fossem tratar desta questão com os apóstolos e os anciãos em Jerusalém.3 Acompanhados {algum tempo} dos membros da comunidade, tomaram o caminho que atravessa a Fenícia e Samaria. Contaram a todos os irmãos a conversão dos gentios, o que causou a todos grande alegria.4 Chegando a Jerusalém, foram recebidos pela comunidade, pelos apóstolos e anciãos, a quem contaram tudo o que Deus tinha feito com eles.5 Mas levantaram-se alguns que antes de ter abraçado a fé eram da seita dos fariseus, dizendo que era necessário circuncidar os pagãos e impor-lhes a observância da Lei de Moisés.6 Reuniram-se os apóstolos e os anciãos para tratar desta questão.7 Ao fim de uma grande discussão, Pedro levantou-se e lhes disse: Irmãos, vós sabeis que já há muito tempo Deus me escolheu dentre vós, para que da minha boca os pagãos ouvissem a palavra do Evangelho e cressem.8 Ora, Deus, que conhece os corações, testemunhou a seu respeito, dando-lhes o Espírito Santo, da mesma forma que a nós.9 Nem fez distinção alguma entre nós e eles, purificando pela fé os seus corações.10 Por que, pois, provocais agora a Deus, impondo aos discípulos um jugo que nem nossos pais nem nós pudemos suportar?11 Nós cremos que pela graça do Senhor Jesus seremos salvos, exatamente como eles.12 Toda a assembléia o ouviu silenciosamente. Em seguida, ouviram Barnabé e Paulo contar quantos milagres e prodígios Deus fizera por meio deles entre os gentios.13 Depois de terminarem, Tiago tomou a palavra: Irmãos, ouvi-me, disse ele.14 Simão narrou como Deus começou a olhar para as nações pagãs para tirar delas um povo que trouxesse o seu nome.15 Ora, com isto concordam as palavras dos profetas, como está escrito:16 Depois disto voltarei, e reedificarei o tabernáculo de Davi que caiu. E reedificarei as suas ruínas, e o levantarei17 para que o resto dos homens busque o Senhor, e todas as nações, sobre as quais tem sido invocado o meu nome.18 Assim fala o Senhor que faz estas coisas, coisas que ele conheceu desde a eternidade {Am 9,11s.}.19 Por isso, julgo que não se devem inquietar os que dentre os gentios se convertem a Deus.20 Mas que se lhes escreva somente que se abstenham das carnes oferecidas aos ídolos, da impureza, das carnes sufocadas e do sangue.21 Porque Moisés, desde muitas gerações, tem em cada cidade seus pregadores, pois que ele é lido nas sinagogas todos os sábados.22 Então pareceu bem aos apóstolos e aos anciãos com toda a comunidade escolher homens dentre eles e enviá-los a Antioquia com Paulo e Barnabé: Judas, que tinha o sobrenome de Barsabás, e Silas, homens notáveis entre os irmãos.23 Por seu intermédio enviaram a seguinte carta: "Os apóstolos e os anciãos aos irmãos de origem pagã, em Antioquia, na Síria e Cilícia, saúde!24 Temos ouvido que alguns dentre nós vos têm perturbado com palavras, transtornando os vossos espíritos, sem lhes termos dado semelhante incumbência.25 Assim nós nos reunimos e decidimos escolher delegados e enviá-los a vós, com os nossos amados Barnabé e Paulo,26 homens que têm exposto suas vidas pelo nome de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo.27 Enviamos, portanto, Judas e Silas que de viva voz vos exporão as mesmas coisas.28 Com efeito, pareceu bem ao Espírito Santo e a nós não vos impor outro peso além do seguinte indispensável:29 que vos abstenhais das carnes sacrificadas aos ídolos, do sangue, da carne sufocada e da impureza. Dessas coisas fareis bem de vos guardar conscienciosamente. Adeus!30 Tendo-se despedido, a delegação dirigiu-se a Antioquia. Ali reuniram a assembléia e entregaram a carta.31 À sua leitura, todos se alegraram com o estímulo que ela trazia.32 Judas e Silas, que eram também profetas, dirigiam aos irmãos muitas palavras de exortação e de animação.33 Demoraram-se ali por algum tempo. Foram depois pelos irmãos despedidos em paz, voltando aos que lhos tinham enviado.34 {A Silas contudo, pareceu bem ficar ali, e Judas partiu sozinho.}35 Paulo e Barnabé detiveram-se também em Antioquia, ensinando e pregando com muitos outros a palavra do Senhor.36 Ao termo de alguns dias, disse Paulo a Barnabé: Tornemos a visitar os irmãos por todas as cidades onde temos pregado a palavra do Senhor, para ver como estão passando.37 Barnabé queria levar consigo também João, que tinha por sobrenome Marcos.38 Paulo, porém, achava que não devia ser admitido quem se tinha separado deles em Panfília e não os havia acompanhado no ministério.39 Houve tal discussão que se separaram um do outro, e Barnabé, levando consigo Marcos, navegou para Chipre.40 Paulo, porém, tendo escolhido Silas, e depois de ter sido recomendado pelos irmãos à graça do Senhor, partiu.41 Ele percorreu a Síria, a Cilícia, confirmando as comunidades.

1 Then certain men who came down from Judaea taught the brethren [and said], Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain other of them should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.3 And they, being accompanied by [some from] the church, passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles, and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.4 And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and [by] the apostles and elders, and they declared all the things that God had done with them.5 But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them and to command [them] to keep the law of Moses.6 And the apostles and elders came together to consider of this matter.7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up and said unto them, Men [and] brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God chose that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel and believe.8 And God, who knows the hearts, bore them witness, giving them the Holy Spirit, even as [he did] unto us,9 and put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, putting a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?11 For we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.12 Then all the multitude kept silence and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what great miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.13 And after they had become silent, James answered, saying, Men [and] brethren, hearken unto me:14 Simeon has declared how God first visited the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,16 After this I will return and will restore the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will repair its ruins, and I will set it up again,17 that the men that are left might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who does all these things.18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.19 Therefore my sentence is that those from among the Gentiles who are converted to God not be troubled,20 but that we write unto them that they abstain from pollutions of idols and [from] fornication and [from] things strangled and [from] blood.21 For Moses of old time has in every city those that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.22 Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; [namely], Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas, principal men among the brethren;23 and they wrote [letters] by them after this manner: The apostles and elders and brethren [send] greeting unto the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia;24 forasmuch as we have heard that certain [ones] who went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, [Ye must] be circumcised and keep the law, to whom we gave no [such] commandment,25 it seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,26 men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell [you] the same things by mouth.28 For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:29 that ye abstain from foods offered to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication; from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.30 So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch; and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle,31 [which] when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.32 And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words and confirmed [them].33 And after they had tarried [there] a space, they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles.34 Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.35 Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching the word of the Lord and announcing the gospel, with many others also.36 And some days after, Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord [and see] how they do.37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.38 But Paul thought [it] not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia and did not go with them to the work.39 And the contention was so sharp between them that they departed asunder one from the other, and so Barnabas took Mark and sailed unto Cyprus;40 and Paul chose Silas and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.:
