1 Chegando o dia de Pentecostes, estavam todos reunidos no mesmo lugar.2 De repente, veio do céu um ruído, como se soprasse um vento impetuoso, e encheu toda a casa onde estavam sentados.3 Apareceu-lhes então uma espécie de línguas de fogo que se repartiram e pousaram sobre cada um deles.4 Ficaram todos cheios do Espírito Santo e começaram a falar em línguas, conforme o Espírito Santo lhes concedia que falassem.5 Achavam-se então em Jerusalém judeus piedosos de todas as nações que há debaixo do céu.6 Ouvindo aquele ruído, reuniu-se muita gente e maravilhava-se de que cada um os ouvia falar na sua própria língua.7 Profundamente impressionados, manifestavam a sua admiração: Não são, porventura, galileus todos estes que falam?8 Como então todos nós os ouvimos falar, cada um em nossa própria língua materna?9 Partos, medos, elamitas; os que habitam a Macedônia, a Judéia, a Capadócia, o Ponto, a Ásia,10 a Frígia, a Panfília, o Egito e as províncias da Líbia próximas a Cirene; peregrinos romanos,11 judeus ou prosélitos, cretenses e árabes; ouvimo-los publicar em nossas línguas as maravilhas de Deus!12 Estavam, pois, todos atônitos e, sem saber o que pensar, perguntavam uns aos outros: Que significam estas coisas?13 Outros, porém, escarnecendo, diziam: Estão todos embriagados de vinho doce.14 Pedro então, pondo-se de pé em companhia dos Onze, com voz forte lhes disse: Homens da Judéia e vós todos que habitais em Jerusalém: seja-vos isto conhecido e prestai atenção às minhas palavras.15 Estes homens não estão embriagados, como vós pensais, visto não ser ainda a hora terceira do dia.16 Mas cumpre-se o que foi dito pelo profeta Joel:17 Acontecerá nos últimos dias - é Deus quem fala -, que derramarei do meu Espírito sobre todo ser vivo: profetizarão os vossos filhos e as vossas filhas. Os vossos jovens terão visões, e os vossos anciãos sonharão.18 Sobre os meus servos e sobre as minhas servas derramarei naqueles dias do meu Espírito e profetizarão.19 Farei aparecer prodígios em cima, no céu, e milagres embaixo, na terra: sangue fogo e vapor de fumaça.20 O sol se converterá em trevas e a lua em sangue, antes que venha o grande e glorioso dia do Senhor.21 E então todo o que invocar o nome do Senhor será salvo {Jl 3,1-5}.22 Israelitas, ouvi estas palavras: Jesus de Nazaré, homem de quem Deus tem dado testemunho diante de vós com milagres, prodígios e sinais que Deus por ele realizou no meio de vós como vós mesmos o sabeis,23 depois de ter sido entregue, segundo determinado desígnio e presciência de Deus, vós o matastes, crucificando-o por mãos de ímpios.24 Mas Deus o ressuscitou, rompendo os grilhões da morte, porque não era possível que ela o retivesse em seu poder.25 Pois dele diz Davi: Eu via sempre o Senhor perto de mim, pois ele está à minha direita, para que eu não seja abalado.26 Alegrou-se por isso o meu coração e a minha língua exultou. Sim, também a minha carne repousará na esperança,27 pois não deixarás a minha alma na região dos mortos, nem permitirás que o teu santo conheça a corrupção.28 Fizeste-me conhecer os caminhos da vida, e me encherás de alegria com a visão de tua face {Sl 15,8-11}.29 Irmãos, seja permitido dizer-vos com franqueza: do patriarca Davi dizemos que morreu e foi sepultado, e o seu sepulcro está entre nós até o dia de hoje.30 Mas ele era profeta e sabia que Deus lhe havia jurado que um dos seus descendentes seria colocado no seu trono.31 É, portanto, a ressurreição de Cristo que ele previu e anunciou por estas palavras: Ele não foi abandonado na região dos mortos, e sua carne não conheceu a corrupção.32 A este Jesus, Deus o ressuscitou: do que todos nós somos testemunhas.33 Exaltado pela direita de Deus, havendo recebido do Pai o Espírito Santo prometido, derramou-o como vós vedes e ouvis.34 Pois Davi pessoalmente não subiu ao céu, todavia diz: O Senhor disse a meu Senhor: Senta-te à minha direita35 até que eu ponha os teus inimigos por escabelo dos teus pés {Sl 109,1}.36 Que toda a casa de Israel saiba, portanto, com a maior certeza de que este Jesus, que vós crucificastes, Deus o constituiu Senhor e Cristo.37 Ao ouvirem essas coisas, ficaram compungidos no íntimo do coração e indagaram de Pedro e dos demais apóstolos: Que devemos fazer, irmãos?38 Pedro lhes respondeu: Arrependei-vos e cada um de vós seja batizado em nome de Jesus Cristo para remissão dos vossos pecados, e recebereis o dom do Espírito Santo.39 Pois a promessa é para vós, para vossos filhos e para todos os que ouvirem de longe o apelo do Senhor, nosso Deus.40 Ainda com muitas outras palavras exortava-os, dizendo: Salvai-vos do meio dessa geração perversa!41 que receberam a sua palavra foram batizados. E naquele dia elevou-se a mais ou menos três mil o número dos adeptos.42 Perseveravam eles na doutrina dos apóstolos, na reunião em comum, na fração do pão e nas orações.43 De todos eles se apoderou o temor, pois pelos apóstolos foram feitos também muitos prodígios e milagres em Jerusalém e o temor estava em todos os corações.44 Todos os fiéis viviam unidos e tinham tudo em comum.45 Vendiam as suas propriedades e os seus bens, e dividiam-nos por todos, segundo a necessidade de cada um.46 Unidos de coração freqüentavam todos os dias o templo. Partiam o pão nas casas e tomavam a comida com alegria e singeleza de coração,47 louvando a Deus e cativando a simpatia de todo o povo. E o Senhor cada dia lhes ajuntava outros que estavam a caminho da salvação.

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.5 (And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.)6 Now at this sound, the multitude came together and were confounded because each one heard them speak in his own tongue.7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these who speak Galilaeans?8 And how do we hear each one [speak] in our own tongue, with which we were brought up?9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and the dwellers in Mesopotamia and in Judaea and Cappadocia, in Pontus and Asia,10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, in Egypt and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,11 Cretes and Arabians, we hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.12 And they were all amazed and were in doubt, saying one to another, What does this mean?13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.14 Then Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea and all [ye] that dwell in Jerusalem, be this known unto you and hearken to my words;15 for these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is [but] the third hour of the day.16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;18 and [for] certain on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit, and they shall prophesy;19 and I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath: blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke;20 the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood before that great and notable day of the Lord [shall] come;21 and it shall come to pass [that] whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know,23 him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken and by wicked hands have crucified and slain,24 whom God has raised up, having loosed the pains of death because it was not possible for him to be held by it.25 For David speaks concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved,26 therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover even my flesh shall rest in hope27 because thou wilt not leave my soul in Hades, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.29 Men [and] brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.30 Therefore being a prophet and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne;31 he, seeing this before, spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that his soul was not left in Hades, neither did his flesh see corruption.32 This Jesus God has raised up, of whom we all are witnesses.33 Therefore being raised up by the right hand of God and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which ye now see and hear.34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand35 until I make thy foes thy footstool.36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.37 Now when they heard [this], they were pricked in their heart and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men [and] brethren, what shall we do?38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized each one of you into the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.39 For the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are afar off, [even] as many as the Lord our God shall call.40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation.41 So that those who gladly received his word were baptized, and the same day there were added [unto them] about three thousand souls.42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship and in breaking of bread and in prayers.43 And fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.44 And all that believed were together and had all things common45 and sold their possessions and property and distributed them to everyone, as each one had need.46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple and breaking bread from house to house, [they] ate their food together with gladness and singleness of heart,47 praising God and having grace with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.:
