1 Desejo realmente que estejais informados do árduo combate que sustento por amor de vós e dos de Laodicéia, assim como de todos os que ainda não me viram pessoalmente!2 Tudo sofro para que os seus corações sejam reconfortados e que, estreitamente unidos pela caridade, sejam enriquecidos de uma plenitude de inteligência, para conhecerem o mistério de Deus, isto é, Cristo,3 no qual estão escondidos todos os tesouros da sabedoria e da ciência.4 Digo-vos isso para que ninguém vos engane com discursos sedutores.5 Porque, embora corporalmente distante, estou presente a vós em espírito, e me alegro em ver a firmeza da vossa fé em Cristo.6 Como {de nossa pregação} recebestes o Senhor Jesus Cristo, vivei nele,7 enraizados e edificados nele, inabaláveis na fé em que fostes instruídos, com o coração a transbordar de gratidão!8 Estai de sobreaviso, para que ninguém vos engane com filosofias e vãos sofismas baseados nas tradições humanas, nos rudimentos do mundo, em vez de se apoiar em Cristo.9 Pois nele habita corporalmente toda a plenitude da divindade.10 Tendes tudo plenamente nele, que é a cabeça de todo principado e potestade.11 Nele também fostes circuncidados com circuncisão não feita por mão de homem, mas com a circuncisão de Cristo, que consiste no despojamento do nosso ser carnal.12 Sepultados com ele no batismo, com ele também ressuscitastes por vossa fé no poder de Deus, que o ressuscitou dos mortos.13 Mortos pelos vossos pecados e pela incircuncisão da vossa carne, chamou-vos novamente à vida em companhia com ele. É ele que nos perdoou todos os pecados,14 cancelando o documento escrito contra nós, cujas prescrições nos condenavam. Aboliu-o definitivamente, ao encravá-lo na cruz.15 Espoliou os principados e potestades, e os expôs ao ridículo, triunfando deles pela cruz.16 Ninguém, pois, vos critique por causa de comida ou bebida, ou espécies de festas ou de luas novas ou de sábados.17 Tudo isto não é mais que sombra do que devia vir. A realidade é Cristo.18 Ninguém vos roube a seu bel-prazer a palma da corrida, sob pretexto de humildade e culto dos anjos. Desencaminham-se estas pessoas em suas próprias visões e, cheias do vão orgulho de seu espírito materialista,19 não se mantêm unidas à Cabeça, da qual todo o corpo, pela união das junturas e articulações, se alimenta e cresce conforme um crescimento disposto por Deus.20 Se em Cristo estais mortos aos princípios deste mundo, por que ainda vos deixais impor proibições, como se vivêsseis no mundo?21 Não pegues! Não proves! Não toques!,22 proibições estas que se tornam perniciosas pelo uso que delas se faz, e que não passam de normas e doutrinas humanas.23 Elas podem, sem dúvida, dar a impressão de sabedoria, enquanto exibem culto voluntário, de humildade e austeridade corporal. Mas não têm nenhum valor real, e só servem para satisfazer a carne.

1 For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you and [for] those at Laodicea and [for] as many as have not seen my face in the flesh,2 that their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in charity and in all [the] riches of the fulfilled understanding to know the mystery of the God and Father and of the Christ;3 in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.4 And this I say lest anyone should beguile you with enticing words.5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.6 Therefore in the manner in which ye received Christ Jesus the Lord, [so] walk ye in him,7 rooted and built up in him and confirmed in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the traditions of men, according to the elements of the world, and not after Christ.9 For in him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily,10 and ye are complete in him, who is the head of all principality and power.11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of the Christ;12 buried together with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with [him] through the faith of the operation of God, who has raised him from the dead.13 And you, being dead in sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he has quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses,14 blotting out the bill of the decrees that was against us, which was contrary to us and took it out of the way, nailing it to his stake,15 [and] having spoiled the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.16 Let no one therefore judge you in food or in drink or in respect of a feast day or of [the] new moon or of [the] sabbath [days],17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the body is of the Christ.18 Let no one govern you according to their own will under [pretext of] humility and religion of angels, intruding into those things which they have not seen, vainly puffed up by their fleshly mind,19 and not holding fast [to] the Head, from whom all the body, fed and united by its joints and bonds, grows in the increase of God.20 For if ye are dead with the Christ to the elements of the world, why, as though living unto the world, do ye decree rites,21 touch not; taste not; handle not?22 Which all perish with the using, because [they are] the commandments and doctrines of men,23 which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship and humility and neglecting of the body, but they have absolutely no value against the appetites of the flesh.:
