1 Ó insensatos gálatas! Quem vos fascinou a vós, ante cujos olhos foi apresentada a imagem de Jesus Cristo crucificado?2 Apenas isto quero saber de vós: recebestes o Espírito pelas práticas da lei ou pela aceitação da fé?3 Sois assim tão levianos? Depois de terdes começado pelo Espírito, quereis agora acabar pela carne?4 Ter feito tais experiências em vão! Se é que foi em vão!5 Aquele que vos dá o Espírito e realiza milagres entre vós, acaso o faz pela prática da lei, ou pela aceitação da fé?6 Foi este o caso de Abraão: ele creu em Deus e isto lhe foi levado em conta de justiça {Gn 15,6}.7 Sabei, pois: só os que têm fé é que são filhos de Abraão.8 Prevendo a Escritura que Deus justificaria os povos pagãos pela fé, anunciou esta boa nova a Abraão: Em ti todos os povos serão abençoados {Gn 18,18}.9 De modo que os homens de fé são abençoados com a bênção de Abraão, homem de fé.10 Todos os que se apóiam nas práticas legais estão sob um regime de maldição. Pois está escrito: Maldito aquele que não cumpre todas as prescrições do livro da lei {Dt 27,26}.11 Que ninguém é justificado pela lei perante Deus é evidente, porque o justo viverá pela fé {Hab 2,4}.12 Ora, a lei não provém da fé e sim {do cumprimento}: quem observar estes preceitos viverá por eles {Lv 18,5}.13 Cristo remiu-nos da maldição da lei, fazendo-se por nós maldição, pois está escrito: Maldito todo aquele que é suspenso no madeiro {Dt 21,23}.14 Assim a bênção de Abraão se estende aos gentios, em Cristo Jesus, e pela fé recebemos o Espírito prometido.15 Irmãos, vou apresentar-vos uma comparação de ordem humana. Se um testamento for feito em boa e devida forma, por quem quer que seja, ninguém o pode anular ou acrescentar-lhe alguma coisa.16 Ora, as promessas foram feitas a Abraão e à sua descendência. Não diz: aos seus descendentes, como se fossem muitos, mas fala de um só: e a tua descendência {Gn 12,7}, isto é, a Cristo.17 Afirmo, portanto: a lei, que veio quatrocentos e trinta anos mais tarde, não pode anular o testamento feito por Deus em boa e devida forma e não pode tornar sem efeito a promessa.18 Porque, se a herança se obtivesse pela lei, já não proviria da promessa. Ora, pela promessa é que Deus deu o seu favor a Abraão.19 Então que é a lei? É um complemento ajuntado em vista das transgressões, até que viesse a descendência a quem fora feita a promessa; foi promulgada por anjos, passando por um intermediário.20 Mas não há intermediário, tratando-se de uma só pessoa, e Deus é um só.21 Portanto, é a lei contrária às promessas de Deus? De nenhum modo. Se fosse dada uma lei que pudesse vivificar, em verdade a justiça viria pela lei;22 mas a Escritura encerrou tudo sob o império do pecado, para que a promessa mediante a fé em Jesus Cristo fosse dada aos que crêem.23 Antes que viesse a fé, estávamos encerrados sob a vigilância de uma lei, esperando a revelação da fé.24 Assim a lei se nos tornou pedagogo encarregado de levar-nos a Cristo, para sermos justificados pela fé.25 Mas, depois que veio a fé, já não dependemos de pedagogo,26 porque todos sois filhos de Deus pela fé em Jesus Cristo.27 Todos vós que fostes batizados em Cristo, vos revestistes de Cristo.28 Já não há judeu nem grego, nem escravo nem livre, nem homem nem mulher, pois todos vós sois um em Cristo Jesus.29 Ora, se sois de Cristo, então sois verdadeiramente a descendência de Abraão, herdeiros segundo a promessa.

1 O foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you that ye should not trust in the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ has been evidently set forth, crucified among you?2 This only would I learn of you, Did ye receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by the [obedient] ear of faith?3 Are ye so foolish? having begun by the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if [it be] yet in vain.5 He therefore that gives unto you the Spirit and does works of power among you, [does he do it] by the works of the law or by the [obedient] ear of faith?6 Even as Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness.7 Know ye therefore that those who are of faith, the same are the sons of Abraham.8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles through faith, evangelized Abraham in advance, [saying], In thee shall all the Gentiles be blessed.9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, Cursed [is] every one that continues not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God, [it is] evident, for The just shall live by faith.12 And the law is not of faith, but The man that does [the commandments] shall live by them.13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us, (for it is written, Cursed [is] every one that hangs on a tree),14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.15 Brethren, (I speak after the manner of men) Even when a covenant is of man, once it is confirmed, no one cancels it or adds to it.16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He did not say, And to seeds, as of many, but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.17 And this I say [that regarding] the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot cancel it, that it should make the promise of no effect.18 For if the inheritance [is] of the law, [it is] no longer of promise; but God gave [it] to Abraham by promise.19 For what then [serves] the law? It was added because of rebellions until the seed should come to whom the promise was made, [and it was] ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.20 Now a mediator is not [a mediator] of one, but God is one.21 [Is] the law then against the promises of God? No, in no wise, for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.22 But the scripture has concluded all under sin that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to the believers.23 But before faith came, we were under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.24 Therefore the law was our schoolmaster [to bring us] unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.25 But when faith is come, we are no longer under [the hand] of the schoolmaster.26 For ye are all sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus.27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.28 [Here] there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female; for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.29 And if ye [are] Christ's, then ye are Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise.:
