1 Josué convocou os rubenitas, os gaditas e a meia tribo de Manassés:2 Observastes, disse-lhes ele, tudo o que vos ordenou Moisés, servo do Senhor, e obedecestes a todos os mandamentos que vos dei.3 Durante todo esse tempo, até o dia de hoje, não abandonastes vossos irmãos, observando fielmente o mandamento do Senhor, vosso Deus.4 Agora que o Senhor, vosso Deus, deu aos vossos irmãos o descanso que ele havia prometido, retomai o caminho de vossas tendas na terra que vos pertence, e que Moisés, servo do Senhor, vos deu além do Jordão.5 Tende muito cuidado, no entanto, de pôr em prática os mandamentos e as leis que vos prescreveu Moisés, servo do Senhor: amar o Senhor, vosso Deus, andar em todos os seus caminhos, guardar os seus mandamentos e unir-vos a ele, servindo de todo o vosso coração e de toda a vossa alma.6 Josué abençoou-os e os despediu, e eles voltaram para as suas tendas.7 Ora, Moisés tinha dado a uma meia tribo de Manassés uma parte em Basã; por isso Josué deu à outra meia tribo uma parte entre seus irmãos ao ocidente, aquém do Jordão. Despedindo-os para as suas tendas, Josué deu-lhes esta bênção:8 Voltais para vossas tendas com grandes riquezas - numerosos rebanhos, prata e ouro, bronze e ferro, e vestidos em grande quantidade - e reparti com vossos irmãos os despojos de vossos inimigos.9 Os filhos de Rubem, de Gad e da meia tribo de Manassés separaram-se dos israelitas em Silo, na terra de Canaã, e retomaram o caminho da terra de Galaad, terra cuja propriedade tinha recebido por mandamento do Senhor, transmitido a Moisés.10 E, tendo chegado aos distritos do Jordão, que pertencem à terra de Canaã, os filhos de Rubem, de Gad, da meia tribo de Manassés levantaram, ali junto ao Jordão, um enorme altar, que se podia ver de longe.11 Os israelitas, tendo ouvido que os filhos de Rubem, de Gad e da meia tribo de Manassés tinham levantado um altar defronte da terra de Canaã, na região do Jordão do lado dos israelitas,12 reuniram-se todos em Silo para irem combater contra eles.13 Enviaram aos filhos de Rubem, de Gad e da meia tribo de Manassés, na terra de Galaad, o sacerdote Finéias, filho de Eleazar,14 juntamente com dez príncipes, chefes de casas patriarcais, um chefe por tribo, sendo todos chefes de casas patriarcais entre os milhares de Israel.15 Estes, chegando junto aos filhos de Rubem, de Gad e da meia tribo de Manassés, na terra de Galaad, disseram-lhes:16 Eis a mensagem da assembléia do Senhor: que infidelidade é essa que cometeis contra o Deus de Israel, desviando-vos hoje do Senhor e levantando um altar, o que é presentemente um ato de revolta contra ele?17 Porventura não nos basta o pecado de Fogor, do qual ainda hoje não estamos purificados, apesar do castigo que feriu a assembléia do Senhor? E vós vos desviais hoje do Senhor!18 Se vos revoltais hoje contra o Senhor, amanhã sua cólera se inflamará contra toda a assembléia de Israel.19 Se julgais que a terra de vossa herança é impura, passai para a terra que é a propriedade do Senhor, onde se acha sua morada, e instalai-vos no meio de nós; mas não vos revolteis contra o Senhor, nem contra nós, construindo outro altar além do altar do Senhor, nosso Deus.20 Não houve uma explosão de cólera do Senhor contra toda a assembléia de Israel quando Acã, filho de Zaré, pecou contra o que estava votado ao interdito? E não foi só ele que pereceu por causa de seu crime.21 Os filhos de Rubem, de Gad e da meia tribo de Manassés responderam aos chefes dos milhares de Israel:22 Deus todo-poderoso, o Senhor Deus todo-poderoso, o Senhor sabe, e Israel o saiba: se foi por espírito de revolta e por infidelidade para com o Senhor, que ele não nos poupe neste dia!...23 Se foi para desviar-nos do Senhor que levantamos um altar, e se foi para oferecermos sobre ele holocaustos, oblações e sacrifícios de ações de graças, o Senhor mesmo nos peça conta disso!24 Se o fizemos, foi antes por temor de que vossos filhos digam um dia aos nossos: Que tendes vós em comum com o Senhor, o Deus de Israel?25 O Senhor pôs o rio Jordão como fronteira entre nós e vós, ó filhos de Rubem e de Gad: não tendes parte com o Senhor. E desse modo vossos filhos poderiam afastar os nossos do culto do Senhor.26 Por isso combinamos entre nós: construamos um altar, não para holocaustos e sacrifícios,27 mas para que seja um testemunho entre nós e vós, entre os nossos filhos e os vossos, de que prestamos culto ao Senhor em sua presença, oferecendo-lhe nossos holocaustos, nossos sacrifícios e nossas ações de graças, e para que os vossos filhos não digam amanhã aos nossos: vós não tendes parte com o Senhor.28 Se, pois, amanhã eles nos falassem assim, a nós ou aos nossos descendentes, poderíamos responder-lhes: vede a forma do altar do Senhor que nossos pais construíram, não para holocaustos e sacrifícios, mas para servir de testemunho entre nós e vós.29 Longe de nós o pensamento de querer revoltar-nos contra o Senhor, desviando-nos hoje dele por termos construído um altar para holocaustos, oblações e sacrifícios, fora do altar que está diante da morada do Senhor, nosso Deus!30 Tendo ouvido as palavras dos filhos de Rubem, de Gad e da meia tribo de Manassés, o sacerdote Finéias e os príncipes da assembléia, chefes dos milhares de Israel que o acompanhavam, deram-se por satisfeitos.31 Então o sacerdote Finéias, filho de Eleazar, disse aos filhos de Rubem, de Gad e de Manassés: Reconhecemos hoje que o Senhor está no meio de nós, visto que não cometestes esse pecado contra ele, e salvastes assim os israelitas da mão do Senhor!32 O sacerdote Finéias, filho de Eleazar, deixando os filhos de Rubem e de Gad, voltou com os príncipes da terra de Galaad para a terra de Canaã, para junto dos israelitas, e fez-lhes um relatório de tudo.33 Alegraram-se com isso, bendisseram a Deus e não pensaram mais em sair contra eles para devastar a terra habitada pelos filhos de Rubem e de Gad.34 Por isso os filhos de Rubem e de Gad chamaram ao altar que tinham construído Ed, porque, disseram eles, ele é testemunho entre nós de que o Senhor é o verdadeiro Deus.

1 Then Joshua called the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half tribe of Manasseh2 and said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you.3 Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day but have kept the charge of the commandment of the LORD your God.4 And now the LORD your God has given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them; therefore now return and go to your tents [and] unto the land of your possessions which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side of the Jordan.5 Only that with diligence ye keep yourselves doing the commandment and the law, which Moses, the servant of the LORD, charged you: to love the LORD your God and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to cleave unto him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.6 So Joshua, blessing them, sent them; and they went unto their tents.7 Now to the [one] half of the tribe of Manasseh, Moses had given [possession] in Bashan; but unto the [other] half Joshua gave [inheritance] among their brethren on this side of the Jordan to the west. And Joshua also sent these to their tents, after having blessed them,8 And he spoke unto them, saying, Return with great riches unto your tents and with a great amount cattle with silver, with gold, with brass, with iron, and with very much clothing; divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.9 And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, departing from the sons of Israel out of Shiloh, which [is] in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, of which they were the possessors, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.10 And when they came unto the borders of the Jordan, which [is] in the land of Canaan, the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh built an altar there next to the Jordan, a great altar to look upon.11 And the sons of Israel heard it said, Behold, the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of the Jordan, at the passage of the sons of Israel.12 And when the sons of Israel heard [of it], the whole congregation of the sons of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to war against them.13 And the sons of Israel sent unto the sons of Reuben and to the sons of Gad and to the half tribe of Manasseh into the land of Gilead, Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest,14 and with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one [was] the head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel.15 And they came unto the sons of Reuben and to the sons of Gad and to the half tribe of Manasseh unto the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying,16 Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What trespass [is] this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the LORD in that ye have built an altar, that ye might rebel this day against the LORD?17 [Is] the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we are not cleansed until this day, for which there was a plague in the congregation of the LORD?18 And ye turn away this day from following the LORD; and it will be, [seeing] ye rebel today against the LORD, that tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.19 If the land of your possession seems unto you [to be] unclean, [then] pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, in which the LORD'S tabernacle dwells and take possession among us; but do not rebel against the LORD, nor rebel against us, in building yourselves an altar in addition to the altar of the LORD our God.20 Peradventure did Achan, the son of Zerah, not commit a trespass in the anathema, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.21 Then the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel,22 The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knows and let Israel also know; if [it is] in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD (save us not this day)23 that we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD or if to offer thereon burnt offering or present or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require [it];24 likewise, if we have not [rather] done it for fear of this thing, saying, Peradventure tomorrow your children shall speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel?25 The LORD has put the Jordan for a border between us and you, O sons of Reuben and sons of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD, so shall your sons make our sons cease from fearing the LORD.26 Therefore we said, Let us now work to build us an altar, not for burnt offering nor for sacrifice,27 but [that] it [may be] a witness between us and you and our generations after us, to do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings and with our sacrifices and with our peace [offerings] that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.28 Therefore we said, that it shall be, if they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may reply, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings nor for sacrifices, but it [is] a witness between us and you.29 Let it never happen that we should rebel against the LORD or that we should turn today from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for presents, or for sacrifices, in addition to the altar of the LORD our God that [is] before his tabernacle.30 And when Phinehas the priest and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel who [were] with him, heard the words that the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the sons of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them.31 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest, said unto the sons of Reuben and to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD [is] among us because ye have not intended to trespass against the LORD. Now ye have delivered the sons of Israel from the wrath of the LORD.32 And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the sons of Reuben and from the sons of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the sons of Israel and brought them word again.33 And the thing pleased the sons of Israel; and the sons of Israel blessed God and did not speak again of going up against them in battle to destroy the land in which the sons of Reuben and Gad dwelt.34 And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad called the altar [Ed]; for it [is] a witness between us that the LORD [is] God.:
