1 Oráculo. Palavra do Senhor dirigida a Israel por seu Mensageiro.2 Eu vos amei, diz o Senhor. E vós dizeis: em que nos amastes? Esaú não era, porventura, irmão de Jacó? - oráculo do Senhor. Contudo, amei Jacó3 e aborreci Esaú, transformei suas montanhas em desertos solitários e entreguei sua herança aos chacais do deserto.4 Ainda que dissessem os edomitas: fomos destruídos, mas levantar-nos-emos de nossa ruína, eis o que diz o Senhor dos exércitos: que eles construam e eu destruirei; sua terra será chamada terra da impiedade, povo contra o qual irou-se o Senhor para sempre.5 Vereis isto com os vossos olhos e direis: o Senhor é grande, mesmo para além do território de Israel!6 O filho respeita seu pai e o servo, seu senhor. Ora, se eu sou Pai, onde estão as honras que me são devidas? E se eu sou o Senhor, onde está o temor que se me deve? - diz o Senhor dos exércitos a vós, sacerdotes, que desprezais o seu nome e dizeis: que desprezo temos tido por teu nome?7 Ofereceis sobre o meu altar alimentos impuros! E ousais dizer: Em que desprezamos o teu nome? E julgais que a mesa do Senhor seja de pouca importância.8 Se ofereceis em sacrifício um animal cego, não haverá mal algum nisto? E se trazeis um animal coxo e doente, não vedes mal algum nisto? Vai, pois, oferecê-lo ao teu governador; crês que lhe agradarias, que ele receberia bem? - diz o Senhor dos exércitos.9 Ide agora rogar a Deus que nos perdoe! Tendo feito tudo isto com vossas próprias mãos, ouvir-vos-á ele favoravelmente? - diz o Senhor dos exércitos.10 Vá, antes, um de vós e feche as portas. Não acendereis mais inutilmente o fogo no meu altar. Não tenho nenhuma complacência convosco - diz o Senhor dos exércitos - e nenhuma oferta de vossas mãos me é agradável.11 Porque, do nascente ao poente, meu nome é grande entre as nações e em todo lugar se oferecem ao meu nome o incenso, sacrifícios e oblações puras. Sim, grande é o meu nome entre as nações - diz o Senhor dos exércitos.12 Vós, porém, o profanais quando dizeis: A mesa do Senhor está manchada; o que nela se oferece é um alimento comum.13 E dizeis ainda: Ai, que cansaço! E mostrais desprezo pelo altar. Trazeis o animal roubado, o coxo, o doente. Julgais que vou aceitá-lo de vossas mãos? - diz o Senhor.14 Maldito seja o homem fraudulento que consagra e sacrifica ao Senhor um animal defeituoso, tendo no rebanho animais sadios! Sou um grande Rei - diz o Senhor - e o meu nome é temível entre as nações.

1 The burden of the word of the LORD against Israel by the hand of Malachi.2 I have loved you, said the LORD. Yet ye say, In what hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? said the LORD; yet I loved Jacob,3 and I rejected Esau and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.4 When Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus hath the LORD of the hosts said, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The province of wickedness and The people against whom the LORD has indignation for ever.5 And your eyes shall see and ye shall say, The LORD will be magnified over the province of Israel.6 The son honours [his] father and the servant his master; if then I [am] a father, where [is] my honour? and if I [am] a master, where [is] my fear? said the LORD of the hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, In what have we despised thy name?7 Ye offer polluted bread upon my altar; and ye say, In what have we polluted thee? In that ye say, We die of hunger in the service of the LORD.8 And when ye offer the blind [animal] for sacrifice, [is it] not evil? Likewise when ye offer the lame and sick, [is it] not evil? offer it now unto thy prince; will he be pleased with thee or accept thy person? said the LORD of the hosts.9 And now, therefore, beseech the face of God, and he will have compassion on us; this has come by your hand: will he regard your persons? said the LORD of the hosts.10 Who [is there] even among you that would shut the doors or tend [the fire] on my altar for free? I have no pleasure in you, said the LORD of the hosts, neither will the offering from your hand be agreeable unto me.11 For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same, my name is great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense is offered unto my name, and a clean offering; for my name [is] great among the Gentiles, said the LORD of the hosts.12 And ye have profaned it when ye say, We die of hunger at the service of the LORD and when ye speak that his food is contemptible.13 And ye say, Behold, what a weariness [it is]! and ye have rejected it, said the LORD of the hosts; and ye brought [that which was] stolen or lame or sick and presented an offering: should this be acceptable unto me by your hand? said the LORD.14 But cursed [be] the deceiver, who has in his flock a male and vows and sacrifices unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I [am] a great King, saith the LORD of the hosts, and my name [is] formidable among the Gentiles.:
