1 Visão de Abdias. Eis o que diz o Senhor a respeito de Edom. Eis a mensagem que recebemos do Senhor, e que um mensageiro foi encarregado de levar às nações: De pé! Levantemo-nos contra esse povo! Para o combate!2 Eis que te faço pequeno entre as nações, estarás na extrema abjeção.3 A soberba do teu coração transviou-te: tu que habitas nas fendas dos rochedos, numa morada inacessível, e dizes no teu coração: Quem me faria cair por terra?4 Ainda que tivesses colocado o teu ninho tão alto como a águia, ou o tivesses posto entre os astros, eu precipitar-te-ia dali - oráculo do Senhor.5 Se ladrões entrassem em tua casa, ou salteadores noturnos {como foste devastado!},eles só levariam aquilo de que necessitam; se vindimadores entrassem em tua vinha, deixariam ainda a respigar.6 Como foste revistado, Esaú! Como foram roubados teus tesouros ocultos!7 Foste expulso até a fronteira por todos os teus aliados; foste enganado, foste dominado por teus amigos. Teus comensais puseram armadilhas sob teus passos; e não o percebeste!8 Sim, naquele dia - oráculo do Senhor - farei perecer os sábios de Edom, os homens inteligentes da montanha de Esaú.9 Também os teus valentes, ó Temã, serão tomados de medo, a fim de que todo homem, no dia da carnificina, seja exterminado da montanha de Esaú.10 Por causa da violência feita ao teu irmão Jacó, estarás coberto de vergonha, e serás aniquilado para sempre.11 No dia em que lhe fizeste face, quando bárbaros levavam cativo o seu exército, estrangeiros entravam pelas suas portas e lançavam sortes sobre Jerusalém, tu também eras como um deles.12 Não te alegres com o dia {do castigo} de teu irmão, no dia do seu infortúnio! Não te alegres com os males dos filhos de Judá, no dia de sua ruína! Não abras a tua boca {para insultar} no dia de seu desastre!13 Não entres pelas portas {das cidades} de meu povo, no dia da catástrofe! Não contemples com alegria os seus males no dia da calamidade! Não deites a mão às suas riquezas no dia da sua desventura!14 Não te ponhas nas encruzilhadas para matar os fugitivos, e não entregues os sobreviventes no dia da tribulação.15 Porque o dia do Senhor está próximo para todas as nações: como tiveres feito, assim se fará contigo; carregarás sobre a cabeça o peso de teus atos.16 Assim como bebestes no meu monte santo, assim beberão as nações sem cessar; beberão, sorverão, e virão a ser como se nunca tivessem sido.17 Mas sobre o monte Sião estarão os sobreviventes; será um lugar santo, e a casa de Jacó recuperará suas possessões.18 A casa de Jacó será um fogo e a casa de José uma chama, enquanto a casa de Esaú servirá de restolho que será consumido e devorado por aquelas. Nada ficará da casa de Esaú, é o Senhor quem o declara.19 Os que habitam o sul tomarão a montanha de Esaú, os que habitam a planície conquistarão a terra dos filisteus; possuirão o território de Efraim e da Samaria, e Benjamim tomará Galaad.20 Os exércitos de Israel deportados ocuparão as terras dos cananeus até Sarepta. Os deportados de Jerusalém em Sefarad possuirão as cidades do sul.21 Subirão, vitoriosos, o monte Sião para julgarem a montanha de Esaú; e ao Senhor pertencerá a realeza.

1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus hath the Lord GOD said concerning Edom: We have heard the message from the LORD, and [a] messenger is sent to the Gentiles, Arise, and let us rise up against her in battle.2 Behold, I have made thee small among the Gentiles: thou [shalt be] greatly humbled.3 The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation [is] high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?4 Though thou exalt [thyself] as the eagle and though thou set thy nest among the stars, from there I will bring thee down, said the LORD.5 Did thieves come to thee, or robbers by night? (how art thou destroyed!) would they not have stolen until they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave [some] grapes?6 How were [the things] of Esau searched out! His hidden things were sought after!7 All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee [even] to the border; the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee [and] prevailed against thee; [those that eat] thy bread have laid a wound under thee; [there is] no intelligence in this.8 Shall I not in that day, said the LORD, even destroy the wise [men] out of Edom and intelligence out of the mount of Esau?9 And thy mighty [men], O Teman, shall be dismayed because every man shall be cut off from mount of Esau by the slaughter.10 For [thy] violence against thy brother Jacob, shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.11 In the day that thou didst stand on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces and foreigners entered into his gates and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou [wast] as one of them.12 But thou should not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither should thou have rejoiced over the sons of Judah in the day they were lost; neither should thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.13 Thou should not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; thou should not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid [hands] on their substance in the day of their calamity;14 neither should thou have stood in the crossway, to kill those of his that did escape; neither should thou have delivered up those of his that remained in the day of distress.15 For the day of the LORD [is] near upon all [the] Gentiles: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee; thy reward shall return upon thine own head.16 For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, [so] shall all the Gentiles drink continually; they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.17 But in mount Zion shall be deliverance, and it shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.18 And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them and devour them; and there shall not be [any] remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken [it].19 And [those of] the south shall possess the mount of Esau and the plains of the Palestinians, and they shall also possess the fields of Ephraim and the fields of Samaria; and Benjamin [shall possess] Gilead.20 And the captives of this host of the sons of Israel [shall possess] that of the Canaanites, [even] unto Zarephath; and the captives of Jerusalem, who [shall be] in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.21 And saviours shall come up unto mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD'S.:
