1 Aproximaram-se então as filhas de Salafaad, filho de Hefer, filho de Galaad, filho de Maquir, filho de Manassés, filho de José. Seus nomes eram Maala, Noa, Hegla, Melca e Tersa.2 Elas apresentaram-se diante de Moisés e do sacerdote Eleazar, e diante dos principais e de toda a assembléia, à entrada da tenda de reunião:3 "Nosso pai, disseram elas, morreu no deserto, e não tomou parte na sedição excitada por Coré contra o Senhor; mas morreu por causa de seu próprio pecado. Ora, ele não teve filhos.4 Por que razão há de desaparecer o nome de sua família, por não ter tido filho algum? Dá-nos uma propriedade entre os irmãos de nosso pai."5 Moisés levou a sua causa diante do Senhor,6 que lhe disse:7 "As filhas de Salafaad têm razão. Dar-lhes-ás uma propriedade como herança entre os irmãos de seu pai, para que elas lhe sucedam na herança.8 Dirás aos israelitas: se um homem morrer sem deixar filhos, a herança passara à sua filha;9 se não tiver filhas, será dada aos seus irmãos.10 Se não tiver irmãos, a herança passará aos irmãos de seu pai,11 e se seu pai não tiver irmãos, será dada ao seu parente mais próximo em sua família, e este último tornar-se-á seu possessor. Esta será para os filhos de Israel uma prescrição de direito, assim como o Senhor ordenou a Moisés."12 O Senhor disse a Moisés: "Sobe a esse monte Abarim, e contempla a terra que eu hei de dar aos israelitas.13 Depois de a teres visto, serás reunido aos teus, como o teu irmão Aarão,14 porque, no deserto de Sin, na contenda da assembléia, fostes rebeldes à minha ordem, não manifestando a minha santidade diante deles na questão das águas." {Trata-se das águas de Meribá, em Cades, no deserto de Sin.}15 Moisés disse ao Senhor:16 "O Senhor Deus dos espíritos e de toda a carne escolha um homem que chefie a assembléia,17 que marche à sua frente e guie os seus passos, para que a assembléia do Senhor não seja como um rebanho sem pastor."18 O Senhor respondeu a Moisés: "Toma Josué, filho de Nun, no qual reside o Espírito, e impõe-lhe a mão.19 Apresentá-lo-ás ao sacerdote Eleazar e a toda a assembléia, e o empossarás sob os seus olhos.20 Tu o investirás de tua autoridade, a fim de que toda a assembléia dos israelitas lhe obedeça.21 Ele se apresentará ao sacerdote Eleazar, que consultará por ele o oráculo de Urim diante do Senhor; é segundo essa ordem que se conduzirão, ele e toda a assembléia dos israelitas."22 Moisés fez como o Senhor tinha ordenado. Tomou Josué e apresentou-o ao sacerdote Eleazar, bem como a toda a assembléia.23 Impôs-lhe as mãos e empossou-o assim como o Senhor tinha ordenado pela boca de Moisés.

1 Then came the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh, the son of Joseph; and these [are] the names of his daughters; Mahlah, Noah and Hoglah and Milcah and Tirzah.2 And they stood before Moses and before Eleazar, the priest, and before the princes and all the congregation, [by] the door of the tabernacle of the testimony, saying,3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not in the company of those that gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah, but died in his own sin, and had no sons.4 Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family because he has no son? Give unto us [therefore] a possession among the brethren of our father.5 And Moses brought their cause before the LORD.6 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,7 The daughters of Zelophehad speak right; thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren, and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.8 And thou shalt speak unto the sons of Israel, saying, If a man dies and has no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter.9 And if he has no daughter, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his brethren.10 And if he has no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his father's brethren.11 And if his father has no brethren, then ye shall give his inheritance unto his kinsman that is next to him of his lineage, and he shall inherit it; and it shall be unto the sons of Israel a law of rights, as the LORD commanded Moses.12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Climb up this mount Abarim, and thou shalt see the land which I have given unto the sons of Israel.13 And after thou hast seen it, thou also shalt be gathered unto thy peoples, as Aaron thy brother was gathered.14 For ye were rebels to my word in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me in the waters before their eyes. These [are] the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.15 Then Moses spoke unto the LORD, saying,16 Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,17 who may go out before them, and who may go in before them, and who may lead them out and who may bring them in that the congregation of the LORD not be as sheep without a shepherd.18 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take Joshua, the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay thine hand upon him19 and set him before Eleazar, the priest, and before all the congregation and give him a charge in their presence.20 And thou shalt put [some] of thy splendour upon him that all the congregation of the sons of Israel may hear [him].21 And he shall stand before Eleazar, the priest, whom he shall consult in the judgment of the Urim before the LORD; at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, [both] he and all the sons of Israel with him, even all the congregation.22 And Moses did as the LORD commanded him, and he took Joshua and set him before Eleazar, the priest, and before all the congregation,23 and he laid his hands upon him and gave him a charge, as the LORD had commanded by the hand of Moses.:
