1 Por aquele tempo, Abias, filho de Jeroboão, caiu doente. Jeroboão disse à sua mulher:2 Disfarça-te, para que não conheçam que és minha mulher, e vai a Silo, onde está o profeta Aías, o qual me predisse que eu reinaria sobre este povo.3 Toma contigo dez pães, bolos e um pote de mel, e vai ter com ele. Ele te dirá o que vai acontecer com o menino.4 Assim fez a mulher de Jeroboão: pôs-se a caminho para Silo, e foi à casa de Aías. Este já não podia ver, porque a velhice lhe tinha obscurecido os olhos.5 Mas o Senhor disse-lhe: Eis que aí vem a mulher de Jeroboão para consultar-te a respeito de seu filho doente. Dir-lhe-ás isto e isto. Ao chegar, ela se fará passar por outra.6 Ouvindo o ruído dos seus passos, ao entrar pela porta, Aías disse-lhe: Entra, mulher de Jeroboão; por que te queres fazer passar por outra? Tenho uma triste mensagem para ti.7 Vai e dize a Jeroboão: Eis o que diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: Elevei-te do meio do povo, para fazer de ti o príncipe de meu povo de Israel.8 Dividi o reino da casa de Davi para dar-te uma parte. Tu, porém, não seguiste o exemplo de meu servo Davi, que guardava os meus mandamentos e me seguia de todo o seu coração, fazendo sempre o que me era agradável.9 Fizeste maiores males que todos os que te precederam, e chegaste até a fazer para ti deuses estranhos e figuras fundidas, provocando a minha ira; lançaste-me para trás das costas!10 Por isso farei vir males maiores sobre a casa de Jeroboão; exterminarei de Israel toda a sua família, até o último dos varões, escravo ou livre; varrerei a casa de Jeroboão como se varre o lixo, até que não fique mais nada.11 Todo membro da casa de Jeroboão que morrer na cidade será devorado pelos cães; e os que morrerem no campo serão comidos pelas aves do céu. É o Senhor quem o diz.12 Volta, pois, para a tua casa. Logo que puseres os pés na cidade, o menino morrerá.13 Todo o Israel o chorará e o sepultará, porque este será o único da família de Jeroboão que terá uma sepultura, visto ter sido o único desta família em quem o Senhor, Deus de Israel, encontrou algo de bom.14 O Senhor suscitará em Israel um rei que exterminará a casa de Jeroboão. Mas que digo? Isto já acontece!15 O Senhor vai ferir Israel. Como o caniço é levado pelas águas, assim o Senhor os tirará dessa boa terra que ele deu aos seus pais e os dispersará para além do Eufrates, porque fabricaram para si ídolos que provocam a cólera do Senhor.16 O Senhor abandonará Israel, por causa dos pecados de Jeroboão, que pecou e arrastou também Israel ao seu pecado.17 A mulher de Jeroboão levantou-se e partiu. Ao entrar em Tersa, no momento em que entrava pela porta da casa, o menino morreu.18 Sepultaram-no e todo o Israel o pranteou, assim como o Senhor o predisse pelo seu servo, o profeta Aías.19 O resto das ações de Jeroboão, a história de suas campanhas e de seu governo, tudo isto está consignado no livro das crônicas dos reis de Israel.20 O seu reinado durou vinte e dois anos. Depois disso, adormeceu com seus pais, e seu filho Nadab sucedeu-lhe no trono.21 Roboão, filho de Salomão, reinou sobre Judá. Tinha quarenta e um anos quando começou a reinar, e reinou dezessete anos em Jerusalém, a cidade que o Senhor escolheu entre todas as tribos de Israel para ali estabelecer o seu nome. Sua mãe chamava-se Naama, a amonita.22 O povo de Judá fez o mal diante do Senhor, e com os seus pecados excitaram-lhe o zelo mais do que tinham feito os seus pais.23 Edificaram para si lugares altos, estelas e ídolos asserás sobre todas as colinas e debaixo de tudo que fosse árvore verde.24 Até prostitutas {sagradas} houve na terra. Imitaram todas as abominações dos povos que o Senhor tinha expulsado de diante dos israelitas.25 No quinto ano do reinado de Roboão, Sesac, rei do Egito, atacou Jerusalém26 e tomou os tesouros do templo do Senhor, os do palácio real, roubou tudo, até mesmo os escudos de ouro que Salomão tinha mandado fazer.27 Em sua substituição, o rei Roboão mandou fazer escudos de bronze, e os entregou aos chefes da guarda da porta do palácio real.28 Cada vez que o rei se dirigia ao templo do Senhor, os guardas levavam esses escudos; depois tornavam a colocá-los no corpo da guarda.29 O resto da história de Roboão e seus atos, tudo está consignado no livro das Crônicas dos reis de Judá.30 Jeroboão e Roboão estiveram continuamente em hostilidades.31 Roboão adormeceu com os seus pais e foi sepultado com eles na cidade de Davi. Sua mãe chamava-se Naama, a amonita. Seu filho Abião sucedeu-lhe no trono.

1 At that time Abiyah the son of Jerobo’am fell sick.2 And Jerobo’am said to his wife, Arise, I pray thee, and disguise thyself, that people may not know that thou art the wife of Jerobo’am; and go to Shiloh: behold, there is Achiyahu the prophet, who spoke of me that I should become king over this people.3 And take with thee ten loaves of bread and spice–cakes, and a cruise of honey, and go to him: he will tell thee what is to become of the lad.4 And Jerobo’am’s wife did so, and arose, and went to Shiloh, and came to the house of Achiyahu. But Achiyahu was not able to see; for his eyes were set by reason of his high age.5 And the Lord had said unto Achiyahu, Behold the wife of Jerobo’am is coming to inquire a word of thee about her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou speak unto her; for it will be, when she cometh in, that she will feign to be another.6 And it happened, when Achiyahu heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, that he said, Come in, thou wife of Jerobo’am; why is this, that thou feignest to be another? but I am sent to thee with a hard message.7 Go, say to Jerobo’am, Thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel, Forasmuch as I exalted thee from the midst of the people, and made thee prince over my people Israel,8 And I rent the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it unto thee; whereas thou hast not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed after me with all his heart, to do only what is right in my eyes;9 And thou hast done more evil than all that were before thee; and thou art gone and hast made unto thyself other gods, and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and me hast thou cast behind thy back:10 Therefore, behold, will I bring evil upon the house of Jerobo’am, and will cut off from Jerobo’am every male, also the guarded and fortified in Israel; and I will sweep out after the house of Jerobo’am as one sweepeth away the dung till there be nothing left of it.11 Him that dieth of Jerobo’am in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the heavens eat; for the Lord hath spoken it.12 But thou, arise now, go to thy own house: when thy feet enter into the city, the child shall die.13 And all Israel shall mourn for him, and bury him; for this one alone shall come of Jerobo’am’s family to the grave; because there hath been found in him some good thing toward the Lord the God of Israel in the house of Jerobo’am.14 And the Lord will raise up unto himself a king over Israel, who shall cut off the house of Jerobo’am what is here this day, and what will be after this.15 And the Lord will smite Israel, as the reed is shaken in the water, and he will pull up Israel out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and will scatter them on the other side of the river; because they have made their groves, provoking the Lord to anger.16 And he will give Israel up for the sake of the sins of Jerobo’am, who did sin, and who induced Israel to sin.17 And Jerobo’am’s wife arose, and departed, and came to Thirzah; and as she came to the threshold of the door, the lad died:18 And they buried him; and all Israel mourned for him, according to the word of the Lord, which he had spoken by the hand of his servant Achiyahu the prophet.19 And the rest of the acts of Jerobo’am, how he warred, and how he reigned, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.20 And the days which Jerobo’am reigned were two and twenty years; and he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son became king in his stead.21 And Rehobo’am the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehobo’am was forty and one years old when he became king, and seventeen years did he reign in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother’s name was Na’amah the ‘Ammonitess.22 And Judah did what is evil in the eyes of the Lord, and they moved him to wrath more than all that their fathers had done, with their sins which they committed.23 And they also built themselves high–places, and standing images, and groves, on every high hill, and under every green tree.24 And sodomites also were in the land: they acted in accordance with all the abominable deeds of the nations which the Lord had driven out before the children of Israel.25 And it came to pass in the fifth year of king Rehobo’am, that Shishak the king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem:26 And he took away the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king’s house; yea, every thing did he take away; and he took away all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.27 And king Rehobo’am made in their stead shields of copper, and committed them for keeping into the hand of the chiefs of the runners, who kept guard at the door of the king’s house.28 And it happened whenever the king went into the house of the Lord, that the runners used to bear them, and carried them then back into the apartment of the runners.29 And the rest of the acts of Rehobo’am, and all that he did, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah.30 And there was war between Rehobo’am and Jerobo’am all the days.31 And Rehobo’am slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And his mother’s name was Na’amah the ‘Ammonitess. And Abiyam his son became king in his stead.
