1 Josafá, rei de Judá, retornou são e salvo a Jerusalém.2 Jeú, filho do vidente Hanani, saiu-lhe ao encontro e lhe disse: Deve-se levar auxílio ao ímpio? Amas tu os que odeiam o Senhor? O Senhor está irritado contra ti.3 Todavia, há em ti coisas boas, pois suprimiste da terra os ídolos asserás e aplicaste teu coração à busca de Deus.4 Depois de sua volta a Jerusalém, Josafá saiu de novo a visitar seu povo, desde Bersabé até a montanha de Efraim, para conduzi-lo ao Senhor, Deus de seus pais.5 Estabeleceu juízes na terra, em cada uma das cidades fortes, sem exceção.6 Vede o que fareis, disse ele aos juízes. Não é em nome de um homem que administrais a justiça, mas em nome do Senhor, que vos assistirá quando tiverdes de fazer os vossos julgamentos.7 Que o temor a Deus esteja conosco. Vigiai o vosso procedimento, pois, junto do Senhor, nosso Deus, não há iniqüidade, nem distinção de pessoa, nem admissão de presentes.8 Também em Jerusalém, Josafá tinha estabelecido levitas e sacerdotes voltados à cidade para administrar a justiça em nome do Senhor e para serem árbitros nos litígios.9 Ele lhes deu as seguintes instruções: Eis como agireis, com temor ao Senhor, lealdade e integridade de coração.10 Em todo litígio trazido à vossa presença por vossos irmãos, estabelecidos em vossas cidades, quer se trate de assassínio, de lei, de preceito ou ordenações esclarecei-os, para que não se tornem culpados diante do Senhor, e que sua ira não se inflame contra vós e contra vossos irmãos. Agi dessa maneira para não vos tornardes culpados.11 Tendes à vossa frente o sumo sacerdote Amarias, para todos os assuntos religiosos, e Zabadias, filho de Ismael, príncipe da casa de Judá, para todos os negócios civis. Tereis à vossa disposição levitas, na qualidade de escribas. Cobrai ânimo, portanto, e ao trabalho! Esteja o Senhor com o homem de bem!

1 And Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned to his house in peace, to Jerusalem.2 And there came out to meet him Jehu the son of Chanani the seer, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldst thou help the wicked, and love those that hate the Lord? and because of this there is wrath over thee from before the Lord.3 Nevertheless there are good things found on thee; because thou hast removed the Asheroth out of the land, and hast directed thy heart firmly to seek God.4 And Jehoshaphat remained at Jerusalem; but he went out again through the people from Beer–sheba’ as far as the mountain of Ephraim, and caused them to return unto the Lord the God of their fathers.5 And he appointed judges in the land in all the fortified cities of Judah, in city by city.6 And he said to the judges, Look well at what ye are doing; because not for man are ye to judge, but for the Lord, who is with you in pronouncing judgment.7 And now let the dread of the Lord be upon you: take heed and act; for with the Lord our God there is no injustice, nor respect for persons, nor taking of bribes.8 But also in Jerusalem did Jehoshaphat appoint some of the Levites, and the priests, and of the chiefs of the family divisions of Israel, for the giving of the judgment of the Lord, and for controversies, when they returned to Jerusalem.9 And he charged on them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the Lord, in faithfulness, and with an undivided heart.10 And whatsoever controversy may come to you from your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and ordinances, ye shall truly warn them that they incur not guilt against the Lord, and so there come wrath over you, and over your brethren: so must ye do, and ye will not incur guilt.11 And, behold, Amaryahu the chief priest is over you for every matter of the Lord; and Zebadyahu the son of Yishma’el, the ruler for the house of Judah, for every matter of the king; and the Levites are officers before you. Be strong and act, and may the Lord be with the good.
