1 Ora, tendo o rei Davi acabado de instalar-se em sua residência, e tendo-lhe o Senhor dado paz, livrando-o de todos os inimigos que o cercavam,2 disse ele ao profeta Natã: Vê: eu moro num palácio de cedro, e a arca de Deus está alojada numa tenda!3 Natã respondeu-lhe: Pois bem: faze o que desejas fazer, porque o Senhor está contigo!4 Mas a palavra do Senhor foi dirigida a Natã naquela mesma noite, e dizia:5 Vai e dize ao meu servo Davi: eis o que diz o Senhor: Não és tu quem me edificará uma casa para eu habitar.6 Desde que tirei da terra do Egito os filhos de Israel até o dia de hoje, não habitei casa alguma, mas, qual um viandante, tenho-me alojado sob a tenda e sob um tabernáculo improvisado.7 E em todo esse tempo que andei no meio dos israelitas, falei eu porventura a algum dos chefes de Israel que encarreguei de apascentar o meu povo: por que não me edificas uma casa de cedro?8 Dirás, pois, ao meu servo Davi: eis o que diz o Senhor dos exércitos: eu te tirei das pastagens onde guardavas tuas ovelhas para fazer de ti o chefe de meu povo de Israel.9 Estive contigo em toda parte por onde andaste; exterminei diante de ti todos os teus inimigos, e fiz o teu nome comparável ao dos grandes da terra.10 Designei um lugar para o meu povo de Israel: plantei-o nele, e ali ele mora, sem ser inquietado, e os maus não o oprimirão mais como outrora,11 no tempo em que eu estabelecia juízes sobre o meu povo. Concedo-te uma vida tranqüila, livrando-te de todos os teus inimigos. O Senhor anuncia-te que quer fazer-te uma casa.12 Quando chegar o fim de teus dias e repousares com os teus pais, então suscitarei depois de ti a tua posteridade, aquele que sairá de tuas entranhas, e firmarei o seu reino.13 Ele me construirá um templo, e firmarei para sempre o seu trono real.14 Eu serei para ele um pai e ele será para mim um filho. Se ele cometer alguma falta, castigá-lo-ei com vara de homens, e com açoites de homens,15 mas não lhe tirarei a minha graça, como a retirei de Saul, a quem afastei de ti.16 Tua casa e teu reino estão estabelecidos para sempre diante de mim, e o teu trono está firme para sempre.17 Natã comunicou a Davi todas as palavras dessa revelação.18 O rei Davi veio apresentar-se ao Senhor e disse-lhe: Quem sou eu, Senhor Javé, e quem é a minha família, para que me tenhais trazido até aqui?19 E como se isso parecesse pouco aos vossos olhos, Senhor Javé, fizestes promessas à casa de vosso servo, para tempos futuros! Acaso isso é normal para o homem, Senhor Javé?20 Que poderia acrescentar ainda Davi? Vós conheceis o vosso servo, Senhor Javé.21 Conforme a vossa palavra e segundo o impulso do vosso coração, fizestes todas essas grandes coisas para manifestá-las ao vosso servo.22 Por isso sois grande, ó Senhor Javé. Ninguém há semelhante a vós, e não há outro Deus fora de vós, segundo tudo o que ouvimos dizer.23 E que povo há na terra semelhante ao vosso povo de Israel, a quem seu Deus veio resgatar para que se tornasse o seu povo, dando-lhe um nome, operando em seu favor grandes e terríveis prodígios, e expulsando diante do seu povo resgatado do Egito as nações com os seus deuses?24 Estabelecestes solidamente o vosso povo de Israel, para ser eternamente o vosso povo, e vós vos tornastes o seu Deus, ó Senhor.25 E agora, Senhor Deus, cumpri para sempre a promessa que fizestes a respeito do vosso servo e da sua casa, e fazei como dissestes.26 Então será para sempre exaltado o vosso nome, e dirão: o Senhor dos exércitos é o Deus de Israel. E permaneça estável diante do vós a casa de vosso servo Davi.27 Porque vós mesmo, ó Senhor dos exércitos, fizestes ao vosso servo esta revelação: eu te construirei uma casa. Por isso o vosso servo atreveu-se a dirigir-vos esta prece.28 Agora, ó Senhor Javé, vós sois Deus, e vossas palavras são a mesma verdade. Pois que prometestes ao vosso servo esta graça,29 abençoai desde agora a sua casa, para que ela subsista para sempre diante de vós; porque sois vós, Senhor Javé, que falastes, e graças à vossa bênção a casa de vosso servo será abençoada para sempre.

1 And it came to pass, when the king dwelt in his house, and the Lord had given him rest round about from all his enemies;2 That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, while the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.3 And Nathan said to the king, all that is in thy heart go and do; for the Lord is with thee.4 And it came to pass during that night, That the word of the Lord came unto Nathan, saying,5 Go and say unto my servant, unto David, Thus hath said the Lord, Wilt thou indeed build me a house for my dwelling?6 For I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even until this day; but have been moving about in a tent and in a tabernacle.7 In all the places where I moved about among all the children of Israel, did I speak a word to any one of the tribes of Israel, whom I ordained to feed my people Israel, saying, Why have ye not built for me a house of cedar?8 Now therefore, thus shalt thou say unto my servant, to David, Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, I took thee from the sheep–cote, from behind the flocks, to be a ruler over my people, over Israel;9 And I have been with thee whithersoever thou didst go, and I have cut off all thy enemies from thy presence, and I have made thee a great name, like the name of the great who are on the earth;10 And I have procured a place for my people, for Israel, and I have planted them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and be no more troubled; and that the children of wickedness shall not afflict them any more as aforetimes,11 And as it was since the day that I ordained judges to be over my people Israel; and I have caused thee to rest from all thy enemies; and the Lord telleth thee that he, the Lord, will make thee a house.12 When thy days will be completed, and thou wilt sleep with thy fathers: then will I set up thy seed after thee, who shall proceed out of thy body, and I will establish his kingdom.13 He it is that shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever.14 I too will be to him as a father, and he shall indeed be to me as a son: so that when he committeth iniquity, I will chastise him with the rod of men, and with the plagues of the children of man;15 But my kindness shall not depart from him, as I caused it to depart from Saul, whom I removed from before thee.16 And thy house and thy kingdom shall be steadfast for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.17 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.18 Then went king David in, and sat down before the Lord, and he said, Who am I, O Lord Eternal? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me as far as hitherward?19 And this was yet too small a thing in thine eyes, O Lord Eternal; and thou hast spoken also of thy servant’s house for a distant time. And is this the desert of man, O Lord Eternal?20 And what can David add yet more to speak unto thee? since thou, O Lord Eternal, knowest well thy servant?21 For the sake of thy word, and in accordance with thy own heart, hast thou done all this great thing, so as to let thy servant know it.22 Therefore art thou great, O Eternal God; for there is none like thee, and there is no God beside thee, in accordance with all that we have heard with our ears.23 And who is like thy people, like Israel, the only nation on the earth, which God went to redeem for himself as a people, and to acquire for himself a name, and to do for you this great deed, and fearful things for thy land to drive out, from before thy people which thou hast redeemed for thyself from Egypt, nations and their gods.24 For thou hast established for thyself thy people Israel as a people unto thee for ever; and thou, O Lord, art indeed become their God.25 And now, O Eternal God, let the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, stand firm for ever, and do as thou hast spoken.26 And let thy name be magnified unto everlasting, that men may say, The Lord of hosts is the God over Israel: and may the house of thy servant David be established before thee.27 For thou, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, hast revealed to the ear of thy servant, saying, A house will be built up for thee; therefore hath thy servant found the heart to pray unto thee this prayer.28 And now, O Lord Eternal, thou art the true God, and thy words must become the truth, and thou hast spoken unto thy servant this goodness:29 And now let it please thee and bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee; for thou, O Lord Eternal, hast spoken it; and from thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.
