1 No segundo ano do reinado de Dario, no primeiro dia do sexto mês, a palavra do Senhor foi dirigida pelo profeta Ageu ao governador de Judá, Zorobabel, filho de Salatiel, e ao sumo sacerdote Josué, filho de Josedec, nestes termos:2 Eis o que diz o Senhor dos exércitos: este povo diz: não é ainda chegado o momento de reconstruir a casa do Senhor.3 E a palavra do Senhor foi transmitida pelo profeta Ageu:4 É então o momento de habitardes em casas confortáveis, estando esta casa em ruínas? Eis o que declara o Senhor dos exércitos:5 considerai o que fazeis!6 Semeais muito e recolheis pouco; comeis e não vos saciais; bebeis e não chegais a apagar a vossa sede; vestis, mas não vos aqueceis; e o operário guarda o seu salário em saco roto!7 Assim fala o Senhor dos exércitos: refleti no que fazeis!8 Subi a montanha, trazei madeira e reconstruí a minha casa; ela me será agradável e nela serei glorificado, - oráculo do Senhor.9 Esperastes uma abundante colheita e esta foi magra; dissipei com um sopro o que queríeis armazenar. Por quê? - oráculo do Senhor. Porque minha casa está em ruínas, enquanto cada um de vós só tem cuidado da sua.10 Por isso o céu negou o seu orvalho e a terra, os seus frutos.11 Sequei terras e colinas, trigo, mosto e óleo, todo o fruto da terra, homens e animais, tudo o que produz o trabalho de vossas mãos.12 Zorobabel, filho de Salatiel, com o sumo sacerdote Josué, filho de Josedec, e todo o resto do povo, ouviram a voz do Senhor seu Deus, e as palavras que lhes dirigiu o profeta Ageu da parte do Senhor. E todo o povo temeu o Senhor.13 Ageu, enviado do Senhor, falou ao povo segundo o mandato que ele tinha recebido do Senhor: Estou convosco - oráculo do Senhor.14 Então o Senhor inspirou coragem a Zorobabel, filho de Salatiel, governador de Judá, e ao sumo sacerdote Josué, filho de Josedec, bem como a todo o resto do povo: todos puseram-se a trabalhar na construção da casa do Senhor dos exércitos, seu Deus,15 aos vinte e quatro dias do sexto mês.

1 In the second year of king Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, came the word of the Lord through means of Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealthiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,2 Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, saying, This people have said, The time is not yet come, the time for the Lord’s house to be built.3 And the word of the Lord came by means of Haggai the prophet, saying,4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your ceiled houses, while this house lieth in ruins?5 Now therefore, thus hath said the Lord of hosts, Direct your heart unto your ways.6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but it doth not satisfy hunger; ye drink, but it doth not appease thirst; ye clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he that earneth something earneth it for a bag with holes.7 Thus hath said the Lord of hosts, Direct your heart to your ways.8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house: that I may take pleasure in it, and be glorified, saith the Lord.9 Till now ye looked for much, and lo, it came to be little; and when ye brought it home, I blew upon it. For what cause? saith the Lord of hosts. Because of my house that lieth in ruins, while ye run every man unto his own house.10 Therefore do the heavens for your sake withhold the dew, and the earth withholdeth her products.11 And I called for a drought over the land, and over the mountains, and over the corn, and over the new wine, and over the oil, and over what the ground bringeth forth, and over men, and over cattle, and over all the labor of the hands.12 Then hearkened Zerubbabel the son of Shealthiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, unto the voice of the Lord their God, and to the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him, and the people were afraid of the Lord.13 Then said Haggai the messenger of the Lord by the Lord’s message unto the people saying, I am with you, saith the Lord.14 And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealthiel, the governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people, and they came and did work on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God.15 On the four and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of king Darius.
