1 Efraim se alimenta de vento, persegue o vento do oriente, multiplica dia a dia a mentira e a violência; fazem aliança com a Assíria, e transportam óleo em homenagem ao Egito.2 O Senhor está em processo com Judá; vai castigar Jacó pelos seus atos e tratá-lo segundo as suas obras.3 Desde o nascimento Jacó suplantou o irmão, e quando se tornou adulto, lutou com Deus.4 Lutou com o anjo e o venceu, chorou e lhe pediu graça. Encontrou-o em Betel, onde {Deus} nos falou,5 o Senhor, Deus dos exércitos, cujo nome é Javé.6 Quanto a ti, volta ao teu Deus, conserva a piedade e a justiça, e espera sempre no teu Deus.7 Esse mercador tem uma balança falsa e ama a fraude!8 Efraim disse: Em verdade, tornei-me rico, amontoei fortuna. Mas todos os seus ganhos não poderiam compensar os pecados que ele cometeu.9 Eu sou o Senhor, teu Deus, desde a saída do Egito; farei com que habites de novo sob tendas, como nos dias de festa.10 Falei aos profetas e multipliquei as visões; pela boca dos profetas falei em comparações.11 Se Galaad não passa de um ídolo vão, eles se tornaram em Gálgala um puro nada; ofereceram sacrifícios aos ídolos, por isso seus altares serão transformados em montões de pedras nos sulcos dos campos.12 Jacó fugiu para os campos de Arão, Israel trabalhou como servo para obter esposa, e por uma mulher guardou os rebanhos.13 O Senhor fez sair Israel do Egito por um profeta, por um profeta foi guardado o povo.14 Efraim causou amargos desgostos: por isso o sangue que ele derramou recairá sobre ele, e seu Senhor lhe pagará seus ultrajes.

1 (12:2) Ephraim feedeth on wind, and pursueth the east wind; the whole day he increaseth deceit and corruption; and a covenant do they make with Assyria, and oil is carried into Egypt.2 (12:3) But with Judah also hath the Lord to hold a controversy; and to punish Jacob according to his ways, according to his doings will he recompense him.3 (12:4) In the womb he took his brother by the heel, and in his strength he strove with an angel.4 (12:5) Yea, he strove with an angel, and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication unto him: in Beth–el he should find him, and there he will speak with us.5 (12:6) And the Lord God of hosts, the Eternal One is his memorial.6 (12:7) Therefore do thou return to thy God: keep goodness and justice, and wait on thy God continually.7 (12:8) But like a merchant, who hath the balances of deceit in his hand, loving to overreach,8 (12:9) Did Ephraim say, I am certainly become rich, I have acquired substance unto myself: it is all through my labors; they will find no iniquity in me, that could be sin.9 (12:10) And I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt: I will yet make thee dwell in tents, as in the days of antiquity.10 (12:11) And I have spoken through the prophets, and I myself have multiplied visions, and by the means of the prophets have I spoken in similitudes.11 (12:12) If in Gil’ad there was misfortune, it is because there was naught but idolatry; in Gilgal they sacrificed bullocks to idols: their altars also are as stone–heaps on the furrows of the fields.12 (12:13) And Jacob fled into the fields of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept the flocks.13 (12:14) And by a prophet did the Lord bring Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he guarded.14 (12:15)Yet Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore will his Lord cast his blood–guiltiness upon him, and his reproach will he recompense unto him.
