1 Foi então que o rei Dario emitiu um decreto ordenando que se fizessem verificações em Babilônia, na casa dos arquivos, onde os tesouros estavam depositados.2 E encontrou-se em Ecbátana, cidade fortificada situada no província da Média, um rolo no qual se lia o seguinte texto:3 No primeiro ano do reinado de Ciro, o rei Ciro deu esta ordem, com relação à casa de Deus que está situada em Jerusalém: este templo deve ser reconstruído, para servir de local onde se ofereçam sacrifícios; seus fundamentos devem ser restaurados. Sua altura será de sessenta côvados.4 Terá três carreiras de pedra talhada e uma de madeira. A despesa será paga pela casa do rei.5 Outrossim, devolveremos os utensílios de ouro e prata da casa de Deus, que Nabucodonosor havia tomado do templo de Jerusalém, e transportado para Babilônia; serão repostos no templo de Jerusalém no mesmo lugar em que estavam, e nós os depositaremos na casa de Deus.6 Agora, pois, Tatanai, governador de além do rio, Estarbuzanai e vossos colegas de Arfasaq, que estais além do rio, afastai-vos.7 Deixai continuar os trabalhos da casa de Deus; que o governador dos judeus e seus anciãos reconstruam-na no seu lugar.8 Também ordeno como é que se deve proceder com aqueles anciãos dos judeus, tendo em vista a reconstrução da mencionada casa de Deus: das receitas reais provenientes dos impostos de além-rio, a despesa será fielmente paga a esses homens, a fim de que a obra não sofra interrupção.9 Tudo aquilo que for necessário para os holocaustos do Deus do céu, novilhos, carneiros e cordeiros, trigo, sal, óleo e vinho, ser-lhes-á dado a cada dia, sem falta, segundo a ordem dos sacerdotes que estão em Jerusalém,10 a fim de que possam fazer oferta dos sacrifícios de bom odor ao Deus do céu, e que rezem pela vida do rei e de seus filhos.11 Eis o que ordeno, além disso: se alguém modificar no que quer que seja este edito, arranque-se uma estaca de sua casa, levante-se a mesma, e seja pregado nela onde ficará pendente; e, por seu crime, far-se-á de sua morada um montão de imundícies.12 O Deus que fez habitar ali o seu nome destrua todo rei, todo povo que ousar fazer qualquer coisa para mudar este decreto e destruir essa casa de Deus que está em Jerusalém! Eu, Dario, dei esta ordem: seja ela pontualmente executada.13 Assim Tatanai, governador da outra margem do rio, Estarbuzanai e seus colegas conformaram-se fielmente à ordem enviada pelo rei Dario.14 Os anciãos dos judeus puseram-se a construir o templo e fizeram progresso, sustentados pelas profecias de Ageu, o profeta, e de Zacarias, filho de Ado. Prosseguiram a construção, segundo a ordem do Deus de Israel, e segundo a ordem de Ciro, de Dario e de Artaxerxes, rei da Pérsia.15 Terminou-se o edifício no terceiro dia do mês de Adar no sexto ano do reinado de Dario.16 Os israelitas, os sacerdotes, os levitas e os demais repatriados celebraram com júbilo a dedicação dessa casa de Deus.17 Ofereceram, por ocasião dessa dedicação, cem touros, duzentos carneiros, mil e quatrocentos cordeiros e doze bodes como vítimas pelos pecados de todo Israel, segundo o número das tribos de Israel.18 Estabeleceram os sacerdotes segundo as suas classes, e os levitas segundo suas divisões, para celebrar o culto de Deus em Jerusalém, de conformidade com as prescrições do livro de Moisés.19 Os repatriados celebraram a Páscoa no dia catorze do primeiro mês.20 Os sacerdotes e os levitas, sem exceção, tinham-se purificado; todos estavam puros. Imolaram a Páscoa por todos os repatriados, pelos seus irmãos, os sacerdotes, e por si mesmos.21 Os filhos de Israel que tinham voltado do cativeiro comeram a sua Páscoa, bem como todos aqueles que tinham rompido com as práticas impuras dos povos da região e se haviam unido a eles para buscar o Senhor, Deus de Israel.22 Celebraram com júbilo durante sete dias a festa dos Ázimos, porque o Senhor os havia consolado, fazendo com que o coração do rei da Assíria se inclinasse em favor deles, para confortá-los no trabalho {de reconstrução} da casa de Deus, do Deus de Israel.

1 Then gave king Darius an order, that they should make search in the house of the books, where the treasures were laid up there in Babylon.2 And there was found at Achmetha, in the castle that is in the province of Media, a roll, and therein was thus written: A record.3 In the first year of king Cyrus, king Cyrus gave an order concerning the house of God at Jerusalem, Let the house be built, the place where they used to offer sacrifices, and let its foundations be strongly laid: its height shall be sixty cubits, its breadth sixty cubits,4 With three rows of heavy stones, and a row of new timber; and let the expenses be given out of the king’s house.5 And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took away out of the temple which is in Jerusalem, and brought unto Babylon, be restored, and brought back unto the temple which is in Jerusalem, every one to its place, and let them be put in the house of God.6 Now Thathnai, governor beyond the river, Shethar–bozenai, and your companions the Apharsachites, who are beyond the river, be ye far from there:7 Let the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God on its site.8 And by me is the order given what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God, that out of the king’s property, arising out of the tax beyond the river, the expenses shall forthwith be given unto these men, that they be not hindered.9 And what they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt–offerings unto the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the requirement of the priests who are a Jerusalem, shall be given unto them day by day, without fail.10 That they may offer sacrifices of sweet savors unto the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king and of his sons.11 Also is by me the order given, that if any man should alter this command, timber shall be pulled down from his house, and being set up, he shall be hanged thereon; and his house shall be made a dunghill for this.12 And may the God that causeth his name to dwell there cast down every king and people that will stretch forth their hand to alter, to destroy this house of God which is in Jerusalem. I Darius have given the order: let it be done speedily.13 Then did Thathnai the, governor on this aide of the river, Shethar–bozenai, and their companions, in accordance with what king Darius had sent, act in this manner speedily.14 And the elders of the Jews built, and they prospered, through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of ‘Iddo. And they built, and completed it, according to the order of the God of Israel, and according to the order of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes the king of Persia.15 And this house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of king Darius.16 Then celebrated the children of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the rest of the children of the exile, the dedication of this house of God with joy;17 And they offered for the dedication of this house of God one hundred bullocks, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; and for a sin–offering for all Israel, twelve he–goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel.18 And they stationed the priests in their orders, and the Levites in their divisions, for the service of God, which is in Jerusalem, as it is written in the book of Moses.19 And the children of the exile prepared the passover–sacrifice on the fourteenth day of the first month.20 For the priests and the Levites had purified themselves, as one man were all of them clean; and they slaughtered the passover–sacrifice for all the children of the exile, and for their brethren the priests, and for themselves.21 And then did the children of Israel, who were returned out of the exile, and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the uncleanness of the nations of the earth, to seek the Lord the God of Israel, eat thereof.22 And they celebrated the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy; for the Lord had made them joyful, and had turned the heart of the king of Asshur toward them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.
