1 Ora, o profeta Ageu e o profeta Zacarias, filho de Ado, profetizaram aos judeus que estavam em Judá e em Jerusalém, em nome do Deus de Israel que estava com eles.2 Então Zorobabel, filho de Salatiel, e Josué, filho de Josedec, retomaram a reconstrução do templo de Deus em Jerusalém com a ajuda e a assistência dos profetas de Deus.3 Ao mesmo tempo, Tartanai, governador do lado oposto ao rio, Estarbuzanai e seus colegas vieram procurá-los e falaram-lhes assim: Quem vos deu autorização para reconstruir o templo e levantar suas paredes?4 E acrescentaram: Quais são os nomes dos homens que trabalham nesse edifício?5 Mas Deus tinha os olhos voltados para os anciãos dos judeus, e ninguém os obrigou a interromper os trabalhos, até que chegasse o relatório a Dario a fim de que este respondesse por escrito sobre o assunto.6 Cópia da carta que enviaram ao rei Dario, o governador Tatanai, da outra margem do rio, bem como Estarbuzanai e seus colegas de Artasaq, que também moravam na outra margem do rio.7 Enviaram-lhe um relatório no qual se lia o seguinte: Ao rei Dario prosperidade perfeita!8 Saiba o rei que fomos à província de Judá, à casa do grande Deus. Está ela sendo reconstruída com pedras enormes, e o madeiramento está já colocado nas paredes. Este trabalho está sendo executado com cuidado e progride nas suas mãos;9 por isso, interrogamos os anciãos: Quem vos deu autorização para reconstruir esse templo e levantar esses muros?10 Perguntamos-lhes também os seus nomes para consigná-los aqui e fazê-los conhecidos de ti, pelo menos os que estão à testa deles.11 Responderam: Nós somos servos do Deus do céu e da terra; estamos reconstruindo o templo que há muitos anos fora construído e rematado por um grande rei de Israel.12 Mas nossos pais caíram na ira do Deus do céu, o qual os entregou nas mãos de Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia, o caldeu; este destruiu o templo e transportou o povo cativo para Babilônia.13 Entretanto, no primeiro ano de Ciro, rei de Babilônia, o rei Ciro ordenou a reconstrução desta casa de Deus.14 E o próprio rei Ciro retirou do templo de Babilônia os utensílios de ouro e de prata da casa de Deus, que Nabucodonosor tomara do santuário de Jerusalém e transferira para o templo de Babilônia. Foram entregues a um homem chamado Sassabasar, o qual nomeou governador.15 E disse-lhe: Toma estes utensílios; leva-os para o templo de Jerusalém; e que a casa de Deus seja reconstruída sobre os seus alicerces.16 Foi então que aquele Sassabasar veio para aqui e colocou os fundamentos da casa de Deus em Jerusalém; depois do que, até o presente, temos prosseguido a construção, mas não está ainda terminada.17 Portanto, se o rei acha conveniente que sejam feitas investigações nos arquivos do rei em Babilônia, para ver se é verdade que foi ordenada pelo rei Ciro a reconstrução do templo de Deus em Jerusalém, que o faça e, em seguida, queira o rei transmitir-nos a sua decisão a respeito.

1 Then prophesied Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of ‘Iddo, the prophets, unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel, concerning them.2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealthiel, and Jeshua’ the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God helping them.3 At this same time came to them Thathnai, the governor on this side of the river, and Shethar–bozenai, and their companions, and thus they said unto them, "Who hath given you an order to build this house, and to complete these walls?"4 Then said we unto them after this manner, what are the names of the men that erect this building.5 But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, so that they did not stop them, till the matter came to Darius; and they then returned an answer by letter concerning this.6 A copy of the letter which Thathnai, the governor on this side of the river, and Shethar–bozenai, and his companions, the Apharsachites, who were on this side of the river, sent unto king Darius.7 They sent a report unto him, and thus was it written therein: Unto king Darius be all peace.8 Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which they are building with heavy stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work is urged with speed, and it prospereth in their hands.9 Then asked we these elders, and after this manner said we unto them, Who hath given you the order to build this house, and to complete these walls?10 Also their names did we ask of them, to let thee know them, that we might write down the names of the men that are at their head.11 And in this manner did they return us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we build the house that was built before this many years, and a great king of Israel built and completed it.12 But since our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them up into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, and he destroyed this house, and carried the people as exiles into Babylon.13 However, in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon, king Cyrus gave an order to build this house of God.14 And also the vessels of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought into the temple of Babylon, these did king Cyrus take out of the temple of Babylon, and gave them unto one, Sheshbazzar by name, whom he had appointed as governor;15 And he said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple which is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be built on its site.16 Then came this same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and from that time even until now they have been building it, but it is not yet finished.17 And now, if it seem good to the king, let search be made in the king’s treasure–house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that an order was given by king Cyrus to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send to us his pleasure concerning this matter.
