1 And when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said to Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.2 And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel; and he said, Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?3 And she said, Behold, my maid Bilhah, go in to her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.4 And she gave him Bilhah, her handmaid, for a wife: and Jacob went in to her.5 And Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a son.6 And Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore she called his name Dan.7 And Bilhah, Rachel's maid, conceived again, and bore Jacob a second son.8 And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali.9 When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah, her maid, and gave her Jacob for a wife.10 And Zilpah, Leah's maid, bore Jacob a son.11 And Leah said, A troop cometh: and she called his name Gad.12 And Zilpah, Leah's maid, bore Jacob a second son.13 And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.14 And Reuben went, in the days of wheat-harvest, and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, Give me, I pray thee, of thy son's mandrakes.15 And she said to her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son's mandrakes also? And Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to-night for thy son's mandrakes.16 And Jacob came from the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in to me; for surely I have hired thee with my son's mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.17 And God hearkened to Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob the fifth son.18 And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Issachar.19 And Leah conceived again, and bore Jacob the sixth son.20 And Leah said, God hath endowed me with a good dower; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons: and she called his name Zebulun.21 And afterwards she bore a daughter, and called her name Dinah.22 And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and rendered her fruitful.23 And she conceived, and bore a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach:24 And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD will add to me another son.25 And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, Send me away, that I may go to my own place, and to my country.26 Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.27 And Laban said to him, I pray thee, if I have found favor in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience, that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.28 And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.29 And he said to him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle were with me.30 For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased to a multitude; and the LORD hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for my own house also?31 And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing; if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock:32 I will pass through all thy flock to-day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my hire.33 So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be accounted stolen with me.34 And Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.35 And he removed that day the he-goats that were ring-streaked and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and spotted; every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hands of his sons.36 And he set three days' journey between himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.37 And Jacob took to him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut-tree; and peeled white streaks in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.38 And he set the rods, which he had peeled, before the flocks in the gutters in the watering-troughs, when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.39 And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ring-streaked, speckled, and spotted.40 And Jacob separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks towards the ring-streaked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban: and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not with Laban's cattle.41 And it came to pass, whenever the stronger cattle conceived, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.42 But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's.43 And the man increased exceedingly, and had many cattle, and maid-servants, and men-servants, and camels, and asses.

"2 Jacó ficou irritado e disse: "Por acaso estou no lugar de Deus, que a impediu de ter filhos? "3 Então ela respondeu: "Aqui está Bila, minha serva. Deite-se com ela, para que tenha filhos em meu lugar e por meio dela eu também possa formar família".4 Por isso ela deu a Jacó sua serva Bila por mulher. Ele deitou-se com ela,5 Bila engravidou e deu-lhe um filho.6 Então Raquel disse: "Deus me fez justiça, ouviu o meu clamor e deu-me um filho". Por isso deu-lhe o nome de Dã.7 Bila, serva de Raquel, engravidou novamente e deu a Jacó o segundo filho.8 Então disse Raquel: "Tive grande luta com minha irmã e venci". Pelo que o chamou Naftali.9 Quando Lia viu que tinha parado de ter filhos, tomou sua serva Zilpa e a deu a Jacó por mulher.10 Zilpa, serva de Lia, deu a Jacó um filho.11 Então disse Lia: "Que grande sorte! " Por isso o chamou Gade.12 Zilpa, serva de Lia, deu a Jacó mais um filho.13 Então Lia exclamou: "Como sou feliz! As mulheres dirão que sou feliz". Por isso lhe deu o nome de Aser.14 Durante a colheita do trigo, Rúben saiu ao campo, encontrou algumas mandrágoras e as trouxe a Lia, sua mãe. Então Raquel disse a Lia: "Dê-me algumas mandrágoras do seu filho".15 Mas ela respondeu: "Não lhe foi suficiente tomar de mim o marido? Vai tomar também as mandrágoras que o meu filho trouxe? " Então disse Raquel: "Jacó se deitará com você esta noite, em troca das mandrágoras trazidas pelo seu filho".16 Quando Jacó chegou do campo naquela tarde, Lia saiu ao seu encontro e lhe disse: "Hoje você me possuirá, pois eu comprei esse direito com as mandrágoras do meu filho". E naquela noite ele se deitou com ela.17 Deus ouviu Lia, e ela engravidou e deu a Jacó o quinto filho.18 Disse Lia: "Deus me recompensou por ter dado a minha serva ao meu marido". Por isso deu-lhe o nome de Issacar.19 Lia engravidou de novo e deu a Jacó o sexto filho.20 Disse Lia: "Deus presenteou-me com uma dádiva preciosa. Agora meu marido me tratará melhor; afinal já lhe dei seis filhos". Por isso deu-lhe o nome de Zebulom.21 Algum tempo depois, ela deu à luz uma menina a quem chamou Diná.22 Então Deus lembrou-se de Raquel. Deus ouviu o seu clamor e a tornou fértil.23 Ela engravidou, e deu à luz um filho e disse: "Deus tirou de mim a minha humilhação".24 Deu-lhe o nome de José e disse: "Que o Senhor me acrescente ainda outro filho".25 Depois que Raquel deu à luz José, Jacó disse a Labão: "Deixe-me voltar para a minha terra natal.26 Dê-me as minhas mulheres, pelas quais o servi, e os meus filhos, e partirei. Você bem sabe quanto trabalhei para você".27 Mas Labão lhe disse: "Se mereço sua consideração, peço-lhe que fique. Por meio de adivinhação descobri que o Senhor me abençoou por sua causa".28 E acrescentou: "Diga o seu salário, e eu lhe pagarei".29 Jacó lhe respondeu: "Você sabe quanto trabalhei para você e como os seus rebanhos cresceram sob os meus cuidados.30 O pouco que você possuía antes da minha chegada aumentou muito, pois o Senhor o abençoou depois que vim para cá. Contudo, quando farei algo em favor da minha própria família? "31 Então Labão perguntou: "Que você quer que eu lhe dê? " "Não me dê coisa alguma", respondeu Jacó. "Voltarei a cuidar dos seus rebanhos se você concordar com o seguinte:32 Hoje passarei por todos os seus rebanhos e tirarei do meio deles todas as ovelhas salpicadas e pintadas, todos os cordeiros pretos e todas as cabras pintadas e salpicadas. Eles serão o meu salário.33 E a minha honestidade dará testemunho de mim no futuro, toda vez que você resolver verificar o meu salário. Se estiver em meu poder alguma cabra que não seja salpicada ou pintada, e algum cordeiro que não seja preto, poderá considerá-los roubados. "34 E disse Labão: "De acordo. Seja como você disse".35 Naquele mesmo dia Labão separou todos os bodes que tinham listras ou manchas brancas, todas as cabras que tinham pintas ou manchas brancas, e todos os cordeiros pretos e os colocou aos cuidados de seus filhos.36 Afastou-se então de Jacó, à distância equivalente a três dias de viagem, e Jacó continuou a apascentar o resto dos rebanhos de Labão.37 Jacó pegou galhos verdes de estoraque, amendoeira e plátano e neles fez listras brancas, descascando-os parcialmente e expondo assim a parte branca interna dos galhos.38 Depois fixou os galhos descascados junto aos bebedouros, na frente dos rebanhos, no lugar onde costumavam beber água. Na época do cio, os rebanhos vinham beber e39 se acasalavam diante dos galhos. E geravam filhotes listrados, salpicados e pintados.40 Jacó separava os filhotes do rebanho dos demais, e fazia com que esses ficassem juntos dos animais listrados e pretos de Labão. Assim foi formando o seu próprio rebanho que separou do de Labão.41 Toda vez que as fêmeas mais fortes estavam no cio, Jacó colocava os galhos nos bebedouros, em frente dos animais, para que estes se acasalassem perto dos galhos;42 mas, se os animais eram fracos, não os colocava ali. Desse modo, os animais fracos ficavam para Labão e os mais fortes para Jacó.43 Assim o homem ficou extremamente rico, tornando-se dono de grandes rebanhos e de servos e servas, camelos e jumentos.
