1 And he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father's; and of that which was our father's hath he obtained all this glory.2 And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and behold, it was not towards him as before.3 And the LORD said to Jacob, Return to the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.4 And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah into the field to his flock,5 And said to them, I see your father's countenance, that it is not towards me as before: but the God of my father hath been with me.6 And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times: but God suffered him not to hurt me.8 If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bore speckled: and if he said thus, The ring-streaked shall be thy hire; then all the cattle bore ring-streaked.9 Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.10 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up my eyes, and saw in a dream, and behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ring-streaked, speckled, and grizzled.11 And the angel of God spoke to me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.12 And he said, Lift up now thy eyes and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ring-streaked, speckled, and grizzled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth to thee.13 I am the God of Beth-el, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst to me a vow: now arise, depart from this land, and return to the land of thy kindred.14 And Rachel and Leah answered, and said to him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?15 Are we not counted by him strangers; for he hath sold us, and hath quite consumed also our money.16 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children's: now then whatever God hath said to thee, do.17 Then Jacob arose, and set his sons and his wives upon camels;18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gained, the cattle of his getting, which he had gained in Padan-aram; to go to Isaac, his father, in the land of Canaan.19 And Laban went to shear his sheep; and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father's.20 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he was about to depart.21 So he fled with all that he had; and he arose, and passed over the river, and set his face towards the mount Gilead.22 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled.23 And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days' journey: and they overtook him in the mount Gilead.24 And God came to Laban, the Syrian, in a dream by night, and said to him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.25 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban, with his brethren, pitched in the mount of Gilead.26 And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?27 Why didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me, and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?28 And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons, and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spoke to me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.30 And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou didst earnestly long after thy father's house; yet why hast thou stolen my gods?31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I said, It may be thou wouldest take thy daughters from me by force.32 With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee: for Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them.33 And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two maid-servants' tents; but he found them not. Then he went out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent.34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel's furniture, and sat upon them. And Laban searched all the tent, but found them not.35 And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.36 And Jacob was wroth, and chid with Laban: and Jacob answered, and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so eagerly pursued after me?37 Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household-stuff? set it here before my brethren, and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both.38 These twenty years have I been with thee: thy ewes and thy she-goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.39 That which was torn by beasts, I brought not to thee; I bore the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.40 Thus I was; in the day the drouth consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from my eyes.41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy house: I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times.42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac had been with me, surely thou hadst now sent me away empty. God hath seen my affliction, and the labor of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight.43 And Laban answered, and said to Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine; and what can I do this day to these my daughters, or to their children which they have borne?44 Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee.45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar.46 And Jacob said to his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made a heap: and they ate there upon the heap.47 And Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed:48 And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed:49 And Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.50 If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives besides my daughters; no man is with us; See, God is witness betwixt me and thee.51 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee;52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar to me, for harm.53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.54 Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they ate bread, and tarried all night in the mount.55 And early in the morning Laban arose, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned to his place.

1 Jacó, porém, ouviu falar que os filhos de Labão estavam dizendo: "Jacó tomou tudo que o nosso pai tinha e juntou toda a sua riqueza à custa do nosso pai".2 E Jacó percebeu que a atitude de Labão para com ele já não era a mesma de antes.3 E o Senhor disse a Jacó: "Volte para a terra de seus pais e de seus parentes, e eu estarei com você".4 Então Jacó mandou chamar Raquel e Lia para virem ao campo onde estavam os seus rebanhos,5 e lhes disse: "Vejo que a atitude do seu pai para comigo não é mais a mesma, mas o Deus de meu pai tem estado comigo.6 Vocês sabem que trabalhei para seu pai com todo o empenho,7 mas ele tem me feito de tolo, mudando o meu salário dez vezes. Contudo, Deus não permitiu que ele me prejudicasse.8 Se ele dizia: ‘As crias salpicadas serão o seu salário’, todos os rebanhos geravam filhotes salpicados; e se ele dizia: ‘As que têm listras serão o seu salário’, todos os rebanhos geravam filhotes com listras.9 Foi assim que Deus tirou os rebanhos de seu pai e os deu a mim.10 "Na época do acasalamento, tive um sonho em que olhei e vi que os machos que fecundavam o rebanho tinham listras, eram salpicados e malhados.11 O anjo de Deus me disse no sonho: ‘Jacó! ’ Eu respondi: ‘Eis-me aqui! ’12 Então ele disse: ‘Olhe e veja que todos os machos que fecundam o rebanho têm listras, são salpicados e malhados, porque tenho visto tudo o que Labão lhe fez.13 Sou o Deus de Betel, onde você ungiu uma coluna e me fez um voto. Saia agora desta terra e volte para a sua terra natal’ ".14 Raquel e Lia disseram a Jacó: "Temos ainda parte na herança dos bens de nosso pai?15 Não nos trata ele como estrangeiras? Não apenas nos vendeu como também gastou tudo o que foi pago por nós!16 Toda a riqueza que Deus tirou de nosso pai é nossa e de nossos filhos. Portanto, faça tudo quanto Deus lhe ordenou".17 Então Jacó ajudou seus filhos e suas mulheres a montar nos camelos,18 e conduziu todo o seu rebanho, junto com todos os bens que havia acumulado em Padã-Arã, para ir à terra de Canaã, à casa de seu pai Isaque.19 Enquanto Labão tinha saído para tosquiar suas ovelhas, Raquel roubou de seu pai os ídolos do clã.20 Foi assim que Jacó enganou a Labão, o arameu, fugindo sem lhe dizer nada.21 Ele fugiu com tudo o que tinha e, atravessando o Eufrates, foi para os montes de Gileade.22 Três dias depois, Labão foi informado de que Jacó tinha fugido.23 Tomando consigo os homens de sua família, perseguiu Jacó por sete dias e o alcançou nos montes de Gileade.24 Então, de noite, Deus veio em sonho a Labão, o arameu, e o advertiu: "Cuidado! Não diga nada a Jacó, não lhe faça promessas nem ameaças".25 Labão alcançou Jacó, que estava acampado nos montes de Gileade. Então Labão e os homens se acamparam ali também.26 Ele perguntou a Jacó: "Que foi que você fez? Não só me enganou como também raptou minhas filhas como se fossem prisioneiras de guerra.27 Por que você me enganou, fugindo em segredo, sem avisar-me? Eu teria celebrado a sua partida com alegria e cantos, ao som dos tamborins e das harpas.28 Você sequer me deixou beijar meus netos e minhas filhas para despedir-me deles. Você foi insensato.29 Tenho poder para prejudicá-los; mas, na noite passada, o Deus do pai de vocês me advertiu: ‘Cuidado! Não diga nada a Jacó, não lhe faça promessas nem ameaças’.30 Agora, se você partiu porque tinha saudade da casa de seu pai, por que roubou meus deuses? "31 Jacó respondeu a Labão: "Tive medo, pois pensei que você tiraria suas filhas de mim à força.32 Quanto aos seus deuses, quem for encontrado com eles não ficará vivo. Na presença dos nossos parentes, veja você mesmo se está aqui comigo qualquer coisa que lhe pertença, e, se estiver, leve-a de volta". Ora, Jacó não sabia que Raquel os havia roubado.33 Então Labão entrou na tenda de Jacó, e nas tendas de Lia e de suas duas servas, mas nada encontrou. Depois de sair da tenda de Lia, entrou na tenda de Raquel.34 Raquel tinha colocado os ídolos dentro da sela do seu camelo e estava sentada em cima. Labão vasculhou toda a tenda, mas nada encontrou.35 Raquel disse ao pai: "Não se irrite, meu senhor, por não poder me levantar em sua presença, pois estou com o fluxo das mulheres". Ele procurou os ídolos, mas não os encontrou.36 Jacó ficou irado e queixou-se a Labão: "Qual foi meu crime? Que pecado cometi para que você me persiga furiosamente?37 Você já vasculhou tudo o que me pertence. Encontrou algo que lhe pertença? Então coloque tudo aqui na frente dos meus parentes e dos seus, e que eles julguem entre nós dois.38 "Vinte anos estive com você. Suas ovelhas e cabras nunca abortaram, e jamais comi um só carneiro do seu rebanho.39 Eu nunca levava a você os animais despedaçados por feras; eu mesmo assumia o prejuízo. E você pedia contas de todo animal roubado de dia ou de noite.40 O calor me consumia de dia, e o frio, de noite, e o sono fugia dos meus olhos.41 Foi assim nos vinte anos em que fiquei em sua casa. Trabalhei para você catorze anos em troca de suas duas filhas e seis anos por seus rebanhos, e dez vezes você alterou o meu salário.42 Se o Deus de meu pai, o Deus de Abraão, o Temor de Isaque, não estivesse comigo, certamente você me despediria de mãos vazias. Mas Deus viu o meu sofrimento e o trabalho das minhas mãos e, na noite passada, ele manifestou a sua decisão".43 Labão respondeu a Jacó: "As mulheres são minhas filhas, os filhos são meus, os rebanhos são meus. Tudo o que você vê é meu. Que posso fazer por essas minhas filhas ou pelos filhos que delas nasceram?44 Façamos agora, eu e você, um acordo que sirva de testemunho entre nós dois".45 Então Jacó tomou uma pedra e a colocou de pé como coluna.46 E disse aos seus parentes: "Juntem algumas pedras". Eles apanharam pedras e as amontoaram. Depois comeram ali, ao lado do monte de pedras.47 Labão o chamou Jegar-Saaduta, e Jacó o chamou Galeede.48 Labão disse: "Este monte de pedras é uma testemunha entre mim e você, no dia de hoje". Por isso foi chamado Galeede.49 Foi também chamado Mispá, porque ele declarou: "Que o Senhor nos vigie, a mim e a você, quando estivermos separados um do outro.50 Se você maltratar minhas filhas ou menosprezá-las, tomando outras mulheres além delas, ainda que ninguém saiba, lembre-se de que Deus é testemunha entre mim e você".51 Disse ainda Labão a Jacó: "Aqui estão este monte de pedras e esta coluna que coloquei entre mim e você.52 São testemunhas de que não passarei para o lado de lá para prejudicá-lo, nem você passará para o lado de cá para prejudicar-me.53 Que o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Naor, o Deus do pai deles, julgue entre nós". Então Jacó fez um juramento em nome do Temor de seu pai Isaque.54 Ofereceu um sacrifício no monte e chamou os parentes que lá estavam para uma refeição. Depois de comerem, passaram a noite ali.55 Na manhã seguinte, Labão beijou seus netos e suas filhas e os abençoou, e depois voltou para a sua terra.
