1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith to them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.5 Then Jesus came forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith to them, Behold the man!6 When therefore the chief priests and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;9 And went again into the judgment-hall, and saith to Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.10 Then saith Pilate to him, Speakest thou not to me? knowest thou not, that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?11 Jesus answered, Thou couldst have no power against me; except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me to thee hath the greater sin.12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Cesar's friend. Whoever maketh himself a king, speaketh against Cesar.13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down on the judgment-seat, in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith to the Jews, Behold your King!15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith to them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cesar.16 Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew, Golgotha:18 Where they crucified him, and two others with him, on each side one, and Jesus in the midst.19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.20 Many of the Jews then read this title: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.22 Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith to his mother, Woman, behold thy son!27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and expired.31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath, (for that sabbath was a great day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.32 Then came the soldiers, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him.33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they broke not his legs:34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came out blood and water.35 And he that saw it, testified, and his testimony is true: and he knoweth that he speaketh truth, that ye may believe.36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.38 And after this, Joseph of Arimathea (being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews) besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore and took the body of Jesus.39 And there came also Nicodemus (who at the first came to Jesus by night) and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pound weight.40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen cloths, with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.41 Now in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulcher, in which was never man yet laid.42 There they laid Jesus therefore, because of the Jews' preparation-day, for the sepulcher was nigh at hand.

" E batiam-lhe no rosto.4 Mais uma vez, Pilatos saiu e disse aos judeus: "Vejam, eu o estou trazendo a vocês, para que saibam que não acho nele motivo algum de acusação".5 Quando Jesus veio para fora, usando a coroa de espinhos e a capa de púrpura, disse-lhes Pilatos: "Eis o homem! "6 Ao vê-lo, os chefes dos sacerdotes e os guardas gritaram: "Crucifica-o! Crucifica-o! " Mas Pilatos respondeu: "Levem-no vocês e crucifiquem-no. Quanto a mim, não encontro base para acusá-lo".7 Os judeus insistiram: "Temos uma lei e, de acordo com essa lei, ele deve morrer, porque se declarou Filho de Deus".8 Ao ouvir isso, Pilatos ficou ainda mais amedrontado9 e voltou para dentro do palácio. Então perguntou a Jesus: "De onde você vem? ", mas Jesus não lhe deu resposta.10 "Você se nega a falar comigo? ", disse Pilatos. "Não sabe que eu tenho autoridade para libertá-lo e para crucificá-lo? "11 Jesus respondeu: "Não terias nenhuma autoridade sobre mim, se esta não te fosse dada de cima. Por isso, aquele que me entregou a ti é culpado de um pecado maior".12 Daí em diante Pilatos procurou libertar Jesus, mas os judeus gritavam: "Se deixares esse homem livre, não és amigo de César. Quem se diz rei opõe-se a César".13 Ao ouvir isso, Pilatos trouxe Jesus para fora e sentou-se na cadeira de juiz, num lugar conhecido como Pavimento de Pedra ( que em aramaico é Gábata ).14 Era o Dia da Preparação da semana da Páscoa, por volta do meio-dia. "Eis o rei de vocês", disse Pilatos aos judeus.15 Mas eles gritaram: "Mata! Mata! Crucifica-o! " "Devo crucificar o rei de vocês? ", perguntou Pilatos. "Não temos rei, senão César", responderam os chefes dos sacerdotes.16 Finalmente Pilatos o entregou a eles para ser crucificado. Então os soldados encarregaram-se de Jesus.17 Levando a sua própria cruz, ele saiu para o lugar chamado Caveira ( que em aramaico é chamado Gólgota ).18 Ali o crucificaram, e com ele dois outros, um de cada lado de Jesus.19 Pilatos mandou preparar uma placa e pregá-la na cruz, com a seguinte inscrição: JESUS NAZARENO, O REI DOS JUDEUS.20 Muitos dos judeus leram a placa, pois o lugar em que Jesus foi crucificado ficava próximo da cidade, e a placa estava escrita em aramaico, latim e grego.21 Os chefes dos sacerdotes dos judeus protestaram junto a Pilatos: "Não escrevas ‘O Rei dos Judeus’, mas sim que esse homem se dizia rei dos judeus".22 Pilatos respondeu: "O que escrevi, escrevi".23 Tendo crucificado Jesus, os soldados tomaram as roupas dele e as dividiram em quatro partes, uma para cada um deles, restando a túnica. Esta, porém, era sem costura, tecida numa única peça, de alto a baixo.24 "Não a rasguemos", disseram uns aos outros. "Vamos decidir por sorteio quem ficará com ela. " Isso aconteceu para que se cumprisse a Escritura que diz: "Dividiram as minhas roupas entre si, e tiraram sortes pelas minhas vestes". Foi o que os soldados fizeram.25 Perto da cruz de Jesus estavam sua mãe, a irmã dela, Maria, mulher de Clopas, e Maria Madalena.26 Quando Jesus viu sua mãe ali, e, perto dela, o discípulo a quem ele amava, disse à sua mãe: "Aí está o seu filho",27 e ao discípulo: "Aí está a sua mãe". Daquela hora em diante, o discípulo a levou para casa.28 Mais tarde, sabendo então que tudo estava concluído, para que a Escritura se cumprisse, Jesus disse: "Tenho sede".29 Estava ali uma vasilha cheia de vinagre. Então embeberam uma esponja nela, colocaram a esponja na ponta de um caniço de hissopo e a ergueram até os lábios de Jesus.30 Tendo-o provado, Jesus disse: "Está consumado! " Com isso, curvou a cabeça e entregou o espírito.31 Esse era o Dia da Preparação, e o dia seguinte seria um sábado especialmente sagrado. Por não quererem que os corpos permanecessem na cruz durante o sábado, os judeus pediram a Pilatos que ordenasse que lhes quebrassem as pernas e os corpos fossem retirados.32 Vieram, então, os soldados e quebraram as pernas do primeiro homem que fora crucificado com Jesus e em seguida as do outro.33 Mas quando chegaram a Jesus, percebendo que já estava morto, não lhe quebraram as pernas.34 Em vez disso, um dos soldados perfurou o lado de Jesus com uma lança, e logo saiu sangue e água.35 Aquele que o viu, disso deu testemunho, e o seu testemunho é verdadeiro. Ele sabe que está dizendo a verdade, e dela testemunha para que vocês também creiam.36 Estas coisas aconteceram para que se cumprisse a Escritura: "Nenhum dos seus ossos será quebrado",37 e, como diz a Escritura noutro lugar: "Olharão para aquele que traspassaram".38 Depois disso José de Arimatéia pediu a Pilatos o corpo de Jesus. José era discípulo de Jesus, mas o era secretamente, porque tinha medo dos judeus. Com a permissão de Pilatos, veio e levou embora o corpo.39 Ele estava acompanhado de Nicodemos, aquele que antes tinha visitado Jesus à noite. Nicodemos levou cerca de trinta e quatro quilos de uma mistura de mirra e aloés.40 Tomando o corpo de Jesus, os dois o envolveram em faixas de linho, juntamente com as especiarias, de acordo com os costumes judaicos de sepultamento.41 No lugar onde Jesus foi crucificado havia um jardim; e no jardim, um sepulcro novo, onde ninguém jamais fora colocado.42 Por ser o Dia da Preparação para os judeus e visto que o sepulcro ficava perto, colocaram Jesus ali.
