1 "I made a covenant with my eyes;

how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?

2 For what is the portion from God above,

and the heritage from the Almighty on high?

3 Is it not calamity to the unrighteous,

and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

4 Doesn’t he see my ways,

and count all my steps?

5 "If I have walked with falsehood,

and my foot has hurried to deceit

6 (let me be weighed in an even balance,

that God may know my integrity);

7 if my step has turned out of the way,

if my heart walked after my eyes,

if any defilement has stuck to my hands,

8 then let me sow, and let another eat.

Yes, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

9 "If my heart has been enticed to a woman,

and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,

10 then let my wife grind for another,

and let others sleep with her.

11 For that would be a heinous crime.

Yes, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges,

12 for it is a fire that consumes to destruction,

and would root out all my increase.

13 "If I have despised the cause of my male servant

or of my female servant,

when they contended with me,

14 what then will I do when God rises up?

When he visits, what will I answer him?

15 Didn’t he who made me in the womb make him?

Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?

16 "If I have withheld the poor from their desire,

or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

17 or have eaten my morsel alone,

and the fatherless has not eaten of it

18 (no, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father,

I have guided her from my mother’s womb);

19 if I have seen any perish for want of clothing,

or that the needy had no covering;

20 if his heart hasn’t blessed me,

if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;

21 if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless,

because I saw my help in the gate;

22 then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder blade,

and my arm be broken from the bone.

23 For calamity from God is a terror to me.

Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.

24 "If I have made gold my hope,

and have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’

25 If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great,

and because my hand had gotten much;

26 if I have seen the sun when it shined,

or the moon moving in splendor,

27 and my heart has been secretly enticed,

and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;

28 this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges,

for I should have denied the God who is above.

29 "If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me,

or lifted up myself when evil found him

30 (I have certainly not allowed my mouth to sin

by asking his life with a curse);

31 if the men of my tent have not said,

‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’

32 (the foreigner has not camped in the street,

but I have opened my doors to the traveler);

33 if like Adam I have covered my transgressions,

by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

34 because I feared the great multitude,

and the contempt of families terrified me,

so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—

35 oh that I had one to hear me!

Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me!

Let the accuser write my indictment!

36 Surely I would carry it on my shoulder,

and I would bind it to me as a crown.

37 I would declare to him the number of my steps.

I would go near to him like a prince.

38 If my land cries out against me,

and its furrows weep together;

39 if I have eaten its fruits without money,

or have caused its owners to lose their life,

40 let briers grow instead of wheat,

and stinkweed instead of barley."

1 "Fiz uma aliança

com os meus olhos:

de não olhar para uma virgem.

2 Do contrário, qual seria

a minha porção

do Deus lá de cima,

e que herança receberia

do Todo-Poderoso

desde as alturas?

3 Por acaso, não é a perdição

para o ímpio,

e a desgraça para os que praticam

a maldade?

4 Será que Deus não vê

os meus caminhos

e não conta todos os meus passos?

5 Se andei com falsidade

ou se o meu pé se apressou

para o engano

6 — que Deus me pese

numa balança justa

e conhecerá a minha integridade!"

7 "Se os meus passos se desviaram

do caminho,

se o meu coração

segue os meus olhos,

e se alguma mancha

se apegou às minhas mãos,

8 então que outros comam

o que eu semeei,

e que seja arrancado

o que se produz no meu campo.

9 Se o meu coração se deixou

seduzir por uma mulher,

se fiquei rondando

a porta do meu próximo,

10 então que a minha mulher

moa os cereais

para outro homem,

e que outros se deitem com ela.

11 Pois eu teria cometido

um crime hediondo,

um delito a ser punido pelos juízes.

12 Isso seria fogo que consome

até a destruição

e arrancaria toda a minha colheita

pela raiz."

13 "Se não reconheci

o direito do meu servo

ou da minha serva

quando eles reclamavam

contra mim,

14 então que faria eu

quando Deus se levantasse

no tribunal?

E, se ele me interrogasse,

que lhe responderia eu?

15 Aquele que me formou

no ventre de minha mãe

não os fez também a eles?

Ou não é o mesmo Deus

que nos formou

no ventre materno?"

16 "Se retive o que os pobres

desejavam

ou deixei que os olhos das viúvas

esperassem em vão;

17 ou, se sozinho

comi o meu bocado,

sem reparti-lo com os órfãos

18 — porque

desde a minha mocidade

eu os criei como se fosse

pai deles,

durante toda a minha vida

fui o guia das viúvas —;

19 se vi alguém perecer

por falta de roupa

ou notava que o necessitado

não tinha com que se cobrir;

20 se ele não me agradeceu

do fundo do coração,

quando se aquecia

com a lã dos meus cordeiros;

21 se eu levantei a mão

contra o órfão,

sabendo que eu tinha

o apoio dos juízes,

22 então que a omoplata caia

do meu ombro,

e que o meu braço

seja arrancado da articulação.

23 Porque o castigo de Deus

seria para mim um assombro,

e eu não poderia enfrentar

a sua majestade."

24 "Se no ouro pus

a minha esperança

ou se eu disse ao ouro fino:

‘Você é a minha garantia’;

25 se me alegrei por ser grande

a minha riqueza

e por ter a minha mão

alcançado muito;

26 se olhei para o sol,

quando resplandecia,

ou para a lua, que caminhava

em seu esplendor,

27 e o meu coração se deixou

seduzir em segredo,

e eu lhes atirei beijos com a mão,

28 também isto seria um delito

a ser punido pelos juízes,

pois eu teria negado a Deus,

que está lá em cima."

29 "Se me alegrei com a desgraça

do que me odeia

e se exultei quando o mal o atingiu

30 — eu que não deixei

a minha boca pecar,

rogando praga

para que morresse —;

31 se as pessoas que moram

na minha tenda não disseram:

‘Quem nos dera encontrar

alguém que não se saciou

da carne provida por ele’

32 — pois o estrangeiro

não pernoitava na rua;

as minhas portas estavam

sempre abertas

para os viajantes! —;

33 se, como Adão, encobri

as minhas transgressões,

ocultando a minha iniquidade

em meu íntimo,

34 porque eu tinha medo

da grande multidão,

e o desprezo das famílias

me apavorava,

fazendo com que eu me calasse

e não saísse da porta…"

35 "Quem dera que eu tivesse

quem me ouvisse!

Eis aqui a minha defesa assinada!

Que o Todo-Poderoso

me responda!

Que o meu adversário escreva

a sua acusação!

36 Por certo que a levaria

sobre o meu ombro,

e a poria sobre mim

como se fosse uma coroa.

37 Eu lhe mostraria

o número dos meus passos;

como príncipe

eu me aproximaria dele."

38 "Se a minha terra clamar

contra mim,

e se os seus sulcos

juntamente chorarem;

39 se comi os seus frutos

sem pagar

ou se causei a morte

aos seus donos,

40 que ela produza espinhos

em vez de trigo,

e joio em lugar de cevada."
