1 Hear Yahweh’s word, you children of Israel,

for Yahweh has a charge against the inhabitants of the land:

"Indeed there is no truth, nor goodness,

nor knowledge of God in the land.

2 There is cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery;

they break boundaries, and bloodshed causes bloodshed.

3 Therefore the land will mourn,

and everyone who dwells in it will waste away,

with all living things in her,

even the animals of the field and the birds of the sky;

yes, the fish of the sea also die.

4 "Yet let no man bring a charge, neither let any man accuse;

for your people are like those who bring charges against a priest.

5 You will stumble in the day,

and the prophet will also stumble with you in the night;

and I will destroy your mother.

6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you,

that you may be no priest to me.

Because you have forgotten your God’s law,

I will also forget your children.

7 As they were multiplied, so they sinned against me.

I will change their glory into shame.

8 They feed on the sin of my people,

and set their heart on their iniquity.

9 It will be like people, like priest;

and I will punish them for their ways,

and will repay them for their deeds.

10 They will eat, and not have enough.

They will play the prostitute, and will not increase;

because they have abandoned listening to Yahweh.

11 Prostitution, wine, and new wine take away understanding.

12 My people consult with their wooden idol,

and answer to a stick of wood.

Indeed the spirit of prostitution has led them astray,

and they have been unfaithful to their God.

13 They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains,

and burn incense on the hills, under oaks, poplars, and terebinths,

because its shade is good.

Therefore your daughters play the prostitute,

and your brides commit adultery.

14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the prostitute,

nor your brides when they commit adultery;

because the men consort with prostitutes,

and they sacrifice with the shrine prostitutes;

so the people without understanding will come to ruin.

15 "Though you, Israel, play the prostitute,

yet don’t let Judah offend;

and don’t come to Gilgal,

neither go up to Beth Aven,

nor swear, ‘As Yahweh lives.’

16 For Israel has behaved extremely stubbornly, like a stubborn heifer.

Then how will Yahweh feed them like a lamb in a meadow?

17 Ephraim is joined to idols.

Leave him alone!

18 Their drink has become sour.

They play the prostitute continually.

Her rulers dearly love their shameful way.

19 The wind has wrapped her up in its wings;

and they shall be disappointed because of their sacrifices.

1 Filhos de Israel, escutem

a palavra do Senhor.

Porque o Senhor tem

uma controvérsia

com os moradores da terra:

"Não há verdade, nem amor,

nem conhecimento de Deus

na terra,

2 mas apenas juramento falso,

mentira e assassinato,

roubo e adultério.

Há violência e homicídios

sobre homicídios.

3 Por isso, a terra está de luto,

e todos os seus moradores

desfalecem,

juntamente com os animais

do campo

e com as aves do céu;

e até os peixes do mar estão morrendo."

4 "Todavia, que ninguém acuse,

nem repreenda,

porque a minha acusação

é contra vocês, sacerdotes.

5 Por isso, vocês tropeçarão de dia,

e os profetas,

juntamente com vocês,

tropeçarão de noite;

e eu destruirei a mãe de vocês.

6 O meu povo

está sendo destruído,

pois lhe falta o conhecimento.

Pelo fato de vocês, sacerdotes,

rejeitarem o conhecimento,

também eu os rejeitarei,

para que não sejam mais

sacerdotes diante de mim;

visto que se esqueceram

da lei do seu Deus,

também eu me esquecerei

dos seus filhos."

7 "Quanto mais estes

se multiplicaram,

tanto mais contra mim pecaram;

eu mudarei a sua honra

em vergonha.

8 Alimentam-se do pecado

do meu povo

e o seu maior desejo

é que o povo continue a pecar.

9 Por isso, tal povo, tal sacerdote;

eu os castigarei pela sua conduta

e lhes darei o que merecem

por seus atos.

10 Comerão,

mas não ficarão satisfeitos;

eles se entregarão à prostituição,

mas não se multiplicarão,

porque deixaram de adorar

o Senhor."

11 "A prostituição,

o vinho envelhecido

e o vinho novo

tiram o entendimento.

12 O meu povo consulta

os seus ídolos de madeira,

e um pedaço de pau

lhes dá resposta.

Porque um espírito de prostituição

os enganou,

e eles, prostituindo-se,

abandonaram o seu Deus.

13 Sacrificam no alto dos montes

e queimam incenso

sobre as colinas,

debaixo dos carvalhos,

dos álamos e dos terebintos,

porque é boa a sua sombra.

Por isso, as filhas de vocês

se prostituem,

e as suas noras adulteram."

14 "Não castigarei

as filhas de vocês,

que se prostituem,

nem as suas noras,

quando adulteram,

porque os próprios homens

se retiram com as meretrizes

e oferecem sacrifícios

com as prostitutas cultuais.

E um povo que não tem

entendimento

corre para a sua perdição."

15 "Se você, Israel,

quer se prostituir,

pelo menos não faça

com que Judá se torne culpado.

Não venham a Gilgal,

nem subam a Bete-Áven.

E não jurem, dizendo:

‘Tão certo como vive o Senhor.’

16 Como vaca rebelde,

Israel se rebelou.

Será que o Senhor

pode apascentá-los

num lugar espaçoso

como se fossem cordeiros?"

17 "Efraim está entregue aos ídolos;

é deixá-lo.

18 Tendo acabado de beber,

eles se entregam à prostituição;

os seus príncipes amam

apaixonadamente a desonra.

19 O vento os envolveu

nas suas asas,

e eles ficarão envergonhados

por causa dos seus sacrifícios."
