1 Depois viramo-nos, e caminhamos ao deserto, caminho do Mar Vermelho, como o Senhor me tinha dito, e muitos dias rodeamos o monte Seir.2 Então o Senhor me falou, dizendo:3 Tendes rodeado bastante esta montanha; virai-vos para o norte.4 E dá ordem ao povo, dizendo: Passareis pelos termos de vossos irmãos, os filhos de Esaú, que habitam em Seir; e eles terão medo de vós; porém guardai-vos bem.5 Não vos envolvais com eles, porque não vos darei da sua terra nem ainda a pisada da planta de um pé; porquanto a Esaú tenho dado o monte Seir por herança.6 Comprareis deles, por dinheiro, comida para comerdes; e também água para beber deles comprareis por dinheiro.7 Pois o Senhor teu Deus te abençoou em toda a obra das tuas mãos; ele sabe que andas por este grande deserto; estes quarenta anos o Senhor teu Deus esteve contigo, coisa nenhuma te faltou.8 Passando, pois, por nossos irmãos, os filhos de Esaú, que habitavam em Seir, desde o caminho da planície de Elate e de Eziom-Geber, nos viramos e passamos o caminho do deserto de Moabe.9 Então o Senhor me disse: Não molestes aos de Moabe, e não contendas com eles em peleja, porque não te darei herança da sua terra; porquanto tenho dado a Ar por herança aos filhos de Ló.10 (Os emins dantes habitaram nela; um povo grande e numeroso, e alto como os gigantes.11 Também estes foram considerados gigantes como os anaquins; e os moabitas os chamavam emins.12 Outrora os horeus também habitaram em Seir; porém os filhos de Esaú os lançaram fora, e os destruíram de diante de si, e habitaram no seu lugar, assim como Israel fez à terra da sua herança, que o Senhor lhes tinha dado).13 Levantai-vos agora, e passai o ribeiro de Zerede. Assim passamos o ribeiro de Zerede.14 E os dias que caminhamos, desde Cades-Barneia até que passamos o ribeiro de Zerede, foram trinta e oito anos, até que toda aquela geração dos homens de guerra se consumiu do meio do arraial, como o Senhor lhes jurara.15 Assim também foi contra eles a mão do Senhor, para os destruir do meio do arraial até os haver consumido.16 E sucedeu que, sendo já consumidos todos os homens de guerra, pela morte, do meio do povo,17 O Senhor me falou, dizendo:18 Hoje passarás a Ar, pelos termos de Moabe;19 E chegando até defronte dos filhos de Amom, não os molestes, e com eles não contendas; porque da terra dos filhos de Amom não te darei herança, porquanto aos filhos de Ló a tenho dado por herança.20 (Também essa foi considerada terra de gigantes; antes nela habitavam gigantes, e os amonitas os chamavam zamzumins;21 Um povo grande, e numeroso, e alto, como os gigantes; e o Senhor os destruiu de diante dos amonitas, e estes os lançaram fora, e habitaram no seu lugar;22 Assim como fez com os filhos de Esaú, que habitavam em Seir, de diante dos quais destruiu os horeus, e eles os lançaram fora, e habitaram no lugar deles até este dia;23 Também os caftorins, que saíram de Caftor, destruíram os aveus, que habitavam em Cazerim até Gaza, e habitaram no lugar deles).24 Levantai-vos, parti e passai o ribeiro de Arnom; eis aqui na tua mão tenho dado a Siom, amorreu, rei de Hesbom, e a sua terra; começa a possuí-la, e contende com eles em peleja.25 Neste dia começarei a pôr um terror e um medo de ti diante dos povos que estão debaixo de todo o céu; os que ouvirem a tua fama tremerão diante de ti e se angustiarão.26 Então mandei mensageiros desde o deserto de Quedemote a Siom, rei de Hesbom, com palavras de paz, dizendo:27 Deixa-me passar pela tua terra; somente pela estrada irei; não me desviarei para a direita nem para a esquerda.28 A comida, para que eu coma, vender-me-ás por dinheiro, e dar-me-ás por dinheiro a água para que eu beba; tão somente deixa-me passar a pé;29 Como fizeram comigo os filhos de Esaú, que habitam em Seir, e os moabitas que habitam em Ar; até que eu passe o Jordão, à terra que o Senhor nosso Deus nos há de dar.30 Mas Siom, rei de Hesbom, não nos quis deixar passar por sua terra, porquanto o Senhor teu Deus endurecera o seu espírito, e fizera obstinado o seu coração para to dar na tua mão, como hoje se vê.31 E o Senhor me disse: Eis aqui, tenho começado a dar-te Siom, e a sua terra; começa, pois, a possuí-la para que herdes a sua terra.32 E Siom saiu-nos ao encontro, ele e todo o seu povo, à peleja, em Jaza;33 E o Senhor nosso Deus no-lo entregou, e o ferimos a ele, e a seus filhos, e a todo o seu povo.34 E naquele tempo tomamos todas as suas cidades, e cada uma destruímos com os seus homens, mulheres e crianças; não deixamos a ninguém.35 Somente tomamos por presa o gado para nós, e o despojo das cidades que tínhamos tomado.36 Desde Aroer, que está à margem do ribeiro de Arnom, e a cidade que está junto ao ribeiro, até Gileade, nenhuma cidade houve que de nós escapasse; tudo isto o Senhor nosso Deus nos entregou.37 Somente à terra dos filhos de Amom não chegastes; nem a toda a margem do ribeiro de Jaboque, nem às cidades da montanha, nem a coisa alguma que nos proibira o Senhor nosso Deus.

1 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord had spoken unto me: and we traveled around mount Seir many days.2 And the Lord said unto me, as followeth,3 Ye have traveled long enough around this mountain; turn yourselves northward.4 And the people command thou, saying, Ye are passing by the border of your brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you; therefore take ye good heed unto yourselves;5 Do not contend with them; for I will not give unto you of their land, even so much as a foot’s breadth; because unto Esau have I given mount Seir for an inheritance.6 Food shall ye buy of them for money, that ye may eat; and water also shall ye buy of them for money, that ye may drink.7 For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand; he hath provided for thy wandering through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.8 And we passed away from our brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from the way through the plain, from Elath, and from ‘Ezyon–gaber. And we turned and passed the way of the wilderness of Moab.9 And the Lord said unto me, Do not attack the Moabites, nor contend with them in battle; for I will not give thee from their land any inheritance, because unto the children of Lot have I given ‘Ar for an inheritance.10 The Emim in times past dwelt therein, a people great, and numerous, and tall as the ‘Anakim;11 As Rephaim were also they accounted, equally with the ‘Anakim; and the Moabites called the m Emim.12 And in Seir dwelt the Chorim in times past; but the children of Esau drove them out, and they destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel hath done unto the land of his inheritance, which the Lord hath given unto them.13 Now rise up, and get you over the brook Zered; and we passed over the brook Zered.14 And the time which we came from Kadesh–barnea’, until we had passed over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were spent from out the midst of the camp, as the Lord had sworn unto them.15 And also the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp; until they were spent.16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were spent by, dying from the midst of the people,17 That the Lord spoke unto me, saying,18 Thou art passing this day by the border of Moab, by ‘Ar,19 And thou comest nigh opposite the children of ‘Ammon: do not attack them, nor contend with them; for I will not give unto thee of the land of the children of ‘Ammon any inheritance; because unto the children of Lot have I given it for an inheritance.20 As the land of Rephaim was it also accounted: Rephaim dwelt therein in times past; and the ‘Ammonites called them Zamzummim;21 A people great, and numerous, and tall, as the ‘Anakim; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they drove them out, and dwelt in their stead:22 As he hath done to the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from before whom he destroyed the Chorim; and they drove them out and dwelt in their stead, even unto this day.23 And the ‘Avvim, who dwelt in open towns, as far as unto Gazzah,––the Caphtorim, who came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.24 Rise ye up, set forward, and pass over the brook Arnon; behold I have given into thy hand Sichon the king of Cheshbon, the Emorite, and his land: begin to drive him out, and contend with him in battle.25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven; whoever will hear the report of thee, shall tremble, and shall quake because of thee.26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sichon, the king of Cheshbon, with words of peace, saying,27 Let me pass through thy land: always by the highway will I go along; I will not turn unto the right hand or unto the left.28 Food shalt thou sell me for money, that I may eat; and water for money shalt thou give me, that I may drink: only let me pass through on foot;29 (As the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in ‘Ar, have done unto me:) until that I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which the Lord our God giveth us.30 But Sichon, the king of Cheshbon, would not suffer our passing by him; for the Lord thy God had hardened his spirit, and had made obstinate his heart, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as hath happened this day.31 And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give up Sichon and his land before thee: begin to drive him out, that thou mayest inherit his land.32 And Sichon came out against us, he and all his people, to the battle at Yahaz.33 And the Lord our God gave him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.34 And we conquered all his cities at that time, and devoted every inhabited city, and the women, and the little ones; we left none that escaped.35 Only the cattle we took as booty unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we had captured.36 From ‘Aro’er, which is by the bank of the brook of Arnon, and the city that is in the brook, even unto Gil’ad, there was not one city which was too strong for us; the whole did the Lord our God give up before us.37 Only unto the land of the children of ‘Ammon didst thou not come nigh, unto the whole margin of the brook Yabbok, and the cities in the mountain, and unto whatsoever the Lord our God had forbidden us.
