1 E passadas estas coisas no reinado de Artaxerxes, rei da Pérsia, Esdras, filho de Seraías, filho de Azarias, filho de Hilquias,2 Filho de Salum, filho de Zadoque, filho de Aitube,3 Filho de Amarias, filho de Azarias, filho de Meraiote,4 Filho de Zeraquias, filho de Uzi, filho de Buqui,5 Filho de Abisua, filho de Fineias, filho de Eleazar, filho de Arão, o sumo sacerdote;6 Este Esdras subiu de Babilônia; e era escriba hábil na lei de Moisés, que o Senhor Deus de Israel tinha dado; e, segundo a mão do Senhor seu Deus, que estava sobre ele, o rei lhe deu tudo quanto lhe pedira.7 Também subiram a Jerusalém alguns dos filhos de Israel, dos sacerdotes, dos levitas, dos cantores, dos porteiros e dos netineus, no sétimo ano do rei Artaxerxes.8 E no quinto mês chegou a Jerusalém, no sétimo ano deste rei.9 Pois no primeiro dia do primeiro mês foi o princípio da partida de Babilônia; e no primeiro dia do quinto mês chegou a Jerusalém, segundo a boa mão do seu Deus sobre ele.10 Porque Esdras tinha preparado o seu coração para buscar a lei do Senhor e para cumpri-la e para ensinar em Israel os seus estatutos e os seus juízos.11 Esta é, pois, a cópia da carta que o rei Artaxerxes deu ao sacerdote Esdras, o escriba das palavras dos mandamentos do Senhor, e dos seus estatutos sobre Israel:12 Artaxerxes, rei dos reis, ao sacerdote Esdras, escriba da lei do Deus do céu, paz perfeita, em tal tempo.13 Por mim se decreta que no meu reino todo aquele do povo de Israel, e dos seus sacerdotes e levitas, que quiser ir contigo a Jerusalém, vá.14 Porquanto és enviado da parte do rei e dos seus sete conselheiros para fazeres inquirição a respeito de Judá e de Jerusalém, conforme à lei do teu Deus, que está na tua mão;15 E para levares a prata e o ouro que o rei e os seus conselheiros voluntariamente deram ao Deus de Israel, cuja habitação está em Jerusalém;16 E toda a prata e o ouro que achares em toda a província de Babilônia, com as ofertas voluntárias do povo e dos sacerdotes, que voluntariamente oferecerem, para a casa de seu Deus, que está em Jerusalém.17 Portanto diligentemente comprarás com este dinheiro novilhos, carneiros, cordeiros, com as suas ofertas de alimentos, e as suas libações, e as oferecerás sobre o altar da casa de vosso Deus, que está em Jerusalém.18 Também o que a ti e a teus irmãos bem parecer fazerdes do restante da prata e do ouro, o fareis conforme a vontade do vosso Deus.19 E os utensílios que te foram dados para o serviço da casa de teu Deus, restitui-os perante o Deus de Jerusalém.20 E tudo mais que for necessário para a casa de teu Deus, que te convenha dar, dá-lo-ás da casa dos tesouros do rei.21 E por mim mesmo, o rei Artaxerxes, se decreta a todos os tesoureiros que estão dalém do rio que tudo quanto vos pedir o sacerdote Esdras, escriba da lei do Deus dos céus, prontamente se faça.22 Até cem talentos de prata, e até cem coros de trigo, e até cem batos de vinho, e até cem batos de azeite; e sal à vontade.23 Tudo quanto se ordenar, segundo o mandado do Deus do céu, prontamente se faça para a casa do Deus do céu; pois, para que haveria grande ira sobre o reino do rei e de seus filhos?24 Também vos fazemos saber acerca de todos os sacerdotes e levitas, cantores, porteiros, netineus e ministros desta casa de Deus, que não será lícito impor-lhes, nem tributo, nem contribuição, nem renda.25 E tu, Esdras, conforme a sabedoria do teu Deus, que possues, nomeia magistrados e juízes, que julguem a todo o povo que está dalém do rio, a todos os que sabem as leis do teu Deus; e ao que não as sabe, lhe ensinarás.26 E todo aquele que não observar a lei do teu Deus e a lei do rei, seja julgado prontamente; quer seja morte, quer desterro, quer multa sobre os seus bens, quer prisão.27 Bendito seja o Senhor Deus de nossos pais, que tal inspirou ao coração do rei, para ornar a casa do Senhor, que está em Jerusalém.28 E que estendeu para mim a sua benignidade perante o rei e os seus conselheiros e todos os príncipes poderosos do rei. Assim me animei, segundo a mão do Senhor meu Deus sobre mim, e ajuntei dentre Israel alguns chefes para subirem comigo.

1 And after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king of Persia, Ezra the son of Serayah, the son of ‘Azaryah, the son of Chilkiyah,2 The son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Achitub,3 The son of Amaryah, the son of ‘Azaryah, the son of Merayoth,4 The son of Zerachyah, the son of ‘Uzzi, the son of Bukki,5 The son of Abishua’, the son of Phinehas, the son of Elazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest:6 This ‘Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a practised expounder in the law of Moses, which the Lord the God of Israel hath given; and the king gave him, according to the hand of the Lord his God upon him, all his request.7 And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the gate–keepers, and the temple–servants, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of king Artaxerxes.8 And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.9 For on the first day of the first month was the commencement of the expedition from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.10 For ‘Ezra had directed his heart to inquire in the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and ordinances.11 Now this is the copy of the letter which king Artaxerxes gave unto ‘Ezra the priest, the expounder of the law, the expounder of the words of the commandments of the Lord, and of his statutes for Israel.12 Artaxerxes, the king of kings, unto ‘Ezra the priest, the expounder of the law of the God of heaven, the perfect, and so forth.13 By me is the order given, that every one who is freely willing in my kingdom out of the people of Israel, and their priests and Levites, to go up to Jerusalem, may go up with thee:14 Forasmuch as thou art sent on the part of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to make inquiry concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thy hand;15 And to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem.16 And all freewill offerings of silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offerings which the people and the priests offer willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem.17 Therefore mayest thou buy speedily with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their meat–offerings and their drink–offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.18 And whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do according to the will of your God.19 And the vessels which have been given unto thee for the service of the house of thy God, deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem.20 And the remainder that will yet be needful for the house of thy God, which thou shalt have occasion to procure, procure out of the King’s treasure–house.21 And by me, me King Artaxerxes, is the order given unto all the treasurers who are beyond the river, that whatsoever ‘Ezra the priest, the expounder of the law of the God of heaven, may demand of you, shall be done speedily.22 Up to one hundred talents of silver, and up to one hundred cors of wheat, and up to one hundred baths of wine, and up to one hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing it.23 Whatsoever is ordered by the God of heaven shall be carefully done for the house of the God of heaven; for why should there be wrath against the kingdom of the king and his sons?24 And to you make we it known, that on any of the priests and Levites, singers, gate–keepers, and temple–servants, or ministers of this house of God, no one shall be empowered to impose any tax, tribute, or toll.25 And thou, ‘Ezra, according to the wisdom of thy God which is in thy hand, appoint judges and magistrates, who are to judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and make ye them known to those that know them not.26 And if there be any one who will not execute the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let justice be speedily executed upon him, whether it be unto death or to banishment, or to a fine on goods, or to imprisonment.27 Blessed be the Lord the God of our fathers, who hath put the like of this in the heart of the king, to glorify the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem;28 And who hath extended kindness unto me before the king and his counsellors, and before all the mighty princes of the king: and I strengthened myself according to the hand of the Lord my God upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel principal men to go up with me.
