1 Assim me disse o Senhor: Vai, e compra um cinto de linho e põe-no sobre os teus lombos, mas não o coloques na água.2 E comprei o cinto, conforme a palavra do Senhor, e o pus sobre os meus lombos.3 Então me veio a palavra do Senhor pela segunda vez, dizendo:4 Toma o cinto que compraste, e que trazes sobre os teus lombos, e levanta-te; vai ao Eufrates, e esconde-o ali na fenda de uma rocha.5 E fui, e escondi-o junto ao Eufrates, como o Senhor me havia ordenado.6 Sucedeu, ao final de muitos dias, que me disse o Senhor: Levanta-te, vai ao Eufrates, e toma dali o cinto que te ordenei que o escondesses ali.7 E fui ao Eufrates, e cavei, e tomei o cinto do lugar onde o havia escondido; e eis que o cinto tinha apodrecido, e para nada prestava.8 Então veio a mim a palavra do Senhor, dizendo:9 Assim diz o Senhor: Do mesmo modo farei apodrecer a soberba de Judá, e a muita soberba de Jerusalém.10 Este povo maligno, que recusa ouvir as minhas palavras, que caminha segundo a dureza do seu coração, e anda após deuses alheios, para servi-los, e inclinar-se diante deles, será tal como este cinto, que para nada presta.11 Porque, como o cinto está pegado aos lombos do homem, assim eu liguei a mim toda a casa de Israel, e toda a casa de Judá, diz o Senhor, para me serem por povo, e por nome, e por louvor, e por glória; mas não deram ouvidos.12 Portanto, dize-lhes esta palavra: Assim diz o Senhor Deus de Israel: Todo o odre se encherá de vinho; e dir-te-ão: Porventura não sabemos nós muito bem que todo o odre se encherá de vinho?13 Mas tu dize-lhes: Assim diz o Senhor: Eis que eu encherei de embriaguez a todos os habitantes desta terra, e aos reis da estirpe de Davi, que estão assentados sobre o seu trono, e aos sacerdotes, e aos profetas, e a todos os habitantes de Jerusalém.14 E lhes farei em pedaços atirando uns contra os outros, e juntamente os pais com os filhos, diz o Senhor; não perdoarei, nem pouparei, nem terei deles compaixão, para que não os destrua.15 Escutai, e inclinai os ouvidos; não vos ensoberbeçais; porque o Senhor falou.16 Dai glória ao Senhor vosso Deus, antes que venha a escuridão e antes que tropecem vossos pés nos montes tenebrosos; antes que, esperando vós luz, ele a mude em sombra de morte, e a reduza à escuridão.17 E, se isto não ouvirdes, a minha alma chorará em lugares ocultos, por causa da vossa soberba; e amargamente chorarão os meus olhos, e se desfarão em lágrimas, porquanto o rebanho do Senhor foi levado cativo.18 Dize ao rei e à rainha: Humilhai-vos, e assentai-vos no chão; porque já caiu todo o ornato de vossas cabeças, a coroa da vossa glória.19 As cidades do sul estão fechadas, e ninguém há que as abra; todo o Judá foi levado cativo, sim, inteiramente cativo.20 Levantai os vossos olhos, e vede os que vêm do norte; onde está o rebanho que se te deu, o rebanho da tua glória?21 Que dirás, quando ele te castigar porque os ensinaste a serem capitães, e chefe sobre ti? Porventura não te tomarão as dores, como à mulher que está de parto?22 Quando, pois, disseres no teu coração: Por que me sobrevieram estas coisas? Pela multidão das tuas maldades se descobriram as tuas saias, e os teus calcanhares sofrem violência.23 Porventura pode o etíope mudar a sua pele, ou o leopardo as suas manchas? Então podereis vós fazer o bem, sendo ensinados a fazer o mal.24 Assim os espalharei como o restolho, que passa com o vento do deserto.25 Esta será a tua sorte, a porção que te será medida por mim, diz o Senhor; pois te esqueceste de mim, e confiaste em mentiras.26 Assim também eu levantarei as tuas saias sobre o teu rosto; e aparecerá a tua ignomínia.27 Já vi as tuas abominações, e os teus adultérios, e os teus rinchos, e a enormidade da tua prostituição sobre os outeiros no campo; ai de ti, Jerusalém! Até quando ainda não te purificarás?

1 Thus said the Lord unto me, Go and buy thee a linen girdle, and put it around thy loins, and lay it not in water.2 So I bought the girdle, according to the word of the Lord, and put it around my loins.3 And the word of the Lord came unto me the second time, saying,4 Take the girdle that thou hast bought, which is around thy loins; and arise, go to the Euphrates, and hide it there in a cleft of the rock.5 So I went, and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord has commanded me.6 And it came to pass at the end of many days, that the Lord said unto me, Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there the girdle, which I commanded thee to hide there.7 And I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and took the girdle from the place where I had hidden it: and, behold, the girdle was spoiled, it was useful for nothing.8 Then came the word of the Lord unto me, saying,9 Thus hath said the Lord, After this manner will I destroy the pride of Judah, and the pride of Jerusalem, which is great.10 And this bad people, who refuse to hearken to my words, who walk in the stubbornness of their heart, and have followed other gods, to serve them, and to bow down to them, shall even be as this girdle which is useful for nothing.11 For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so had I caused to cleave unto me all the house of Israel and all the house of Judah, saith the Lord,––to become unto me a people, and to be for a name, and for praise, and for honor; but they would not hear.12 Therefore shalt thou say unto them this word, Thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel, Every bottle shall be filled with wine: and when they will say unto thee, Do we not know full well that every bottle shall be filled with wine?13 Then shalt thou say unto them, Thus hath said the Lord, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that sit after David upon his throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness.14 And I will dash them one against the other, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the Lord: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, so as not to destroy them.15 Hear ye, and bend your ear: be not proud; for the Lord hath spoken.16 Give unto the Lord your God glory, before he cause darkness, and before your feet strike upon the mountains of twilight, and where, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and change it into gross darkness.17 But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places because of your pride; and my eye shall weep sorely, and run down with tears, because the flock of the Lord is driven away captive.18 Say unto the king and to the queen–mother, Sit down very lowly; for sunk down are your head–attires, the crown of your ornament.19 The cities of the south are shut up, and there is no one to open them: Judah is carried away into exile altogether, it is carried into exile completely.20 Lift up your eyes, and see those that are coming from the north: where is the flock that was given thee, thy splendid flock?21 What wilt thou say when he will punish thee? since thou hast accustomed them to be over thee captains, and chiefs? shall not pangs seize upon thee, as on a woman in travail?22 And if thou wilt say in thy heart, Wherefore come these things upon me? For the greatness of thy iniquity are thy skirts laid open, thy heels are made bare violently.23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.24 Therefore will I scatter them as the stubble that passeth away before the wind of the wilderness.25 This is thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me, saith the Lord; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood.26 Therefore do I also strip up thy skirts over thy face, that thy shame may be seen.27 Thy adulteries and thy loud shoutings, the lewdness of thy incest, thy abominations on the hills in the fields have I seen. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! thou wilt not be made clean after ever so long a time.
