1 Falou mais o Senhor a Josué, dizendo:2 Fala aos filhos de Israel, dizendo: Apartai para vós as cidades de refúgio, de que vos falei pelo ministério de Moisés,3 Para que fuja para ali o homicida, que matar alguma pessoa por engano, e não com intenção; para que vos sirvam de refúgio contra o vingador do sangue.4 E fugindo para alguma daquelas cidades, pôr-se-á à porta da cidade e exporá a sua causa aos ouvidos dos anciãos da tal cidade; então o tomarão consigo na cidade; e lhe darão lugar, para que habite com eles.5 E se o vingador do sangue o seguir, não entregarão na sua mão o homicida, porquanto não feriu a seu próximo com intenção, e não o odiou antes.6 E habitará na mesma cidade, até que compareça em juízo perante a congregação, até que morra o sumo sacerdote que houver naqueles dias; então o homicida voltará, e virá à sua cidade e à sua casa, à cidade de onde fugiu.7 Então designaram a Quedes na Galileia, na montanha de Naftali, e a Siquém, na montanha de Efraim, e a Quiriate-Arba (esta é Hebrom), na montanha de Judá.8 E, além do Jordão, na direção de Jericó para o oriente, designaram a Bezer, no deserto, na campina da tribo de Rúben, e a Ramote, em Gileade da tribo de Gade, e a Golã, em Basã da tribo de Manassés.9 Estas são as cidades que foram designadas para todos os filhos de Israel, e para o estrangeiro que habitasse entre eles, para que se acolhesse a elas todo aquele que por engano matasse alguma pessoa, para que não morresse às mãos do vingador do sangue, até se apresentar diante da congregação.

1 And the Lord spoke unto Joshua, saying,2 speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint for yourselves the cities of refuge, whereof I have spoken unto you by the hand of Moses;3 That thither may flee the manslayer that killeth any person unawares, without knowledge; and they shall be unto you for a refuge from the avenger of the blood.4 And he shall flee unto one of those cities, and he shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and speak in the ears of the elders of that city his words; and they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.5 And if the avenger of the blood should pursue after him, then shall they not deliver the manslayer up into his hand; because without knowledge did he smite his neighbor, and he was not an enemy to him in time past.6 And he shall dwell in that city, until he shall have stood before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high–priest that may be in those days: then shall the manslayer return, and come unto his own house, unto the city whence he hath fled.7 And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in the mountain of Naphtali, and Shechem in the mountain of Ephraim, and Kiryath–arba’, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.8 And on the other side of the Jordan by Jericho eastward, they appointed Bezer in the wilderness in the plain from the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gil’ad from the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan from the tribe of Menasseh.9 These were the cities assigned for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that thither might flee whosoever killeth any person at unawares, and that he should not die by the hand of the avenger of the blood, until he have stood before the congregation.
