1 E sucedeu, depois da morte de Josué, que os filhos de Israel perguntaram ao Senhor, dizendo: Quem dentre nós primeiro subirá aos cananeus, para pelejar contra eles?2 E disse o Senhor: Judá subirá; eis que entreguei esta terra na sua mão.3 Então disse Judá a Simeão, seu irmão: Sobe comigo à minha herança. E pelejemos contra os cananeus, e também eu contigo subirei à tua herança. E Simeão partiu com ele.4 E subiu Judá, e o Senhor lhe entregou na sua mão os cananeus e os perizeus; e feriram deles, em Bezeque, a dez mil homens.5 E acharam Adoni-Bezeque em Bezeque, e pelejaram contra ele; e feriram aos cananeus e aos perizeus.6 Porém Adoni-Bezeque fugiu, mas o seguiram, e prenderam-no e cortaram-lhe os dedos polegares das mãos e dos pés.7 Então disse Adoni-Bezeque: Setenta reis, com os dedos polegares das mãos e dos pés cortados, apanhavam as migalhas debaixo da minha mesa; assim como eu fiz, assim Deus me pagou. E levaram-no a Jerusalém, e morreu ali.8 E os filhos de Judá pelejaram contra Jerusalém, e tomando-a, feriram-na ao fio da espada; e puseram fogo na cidade.9 E depois os filhos de Judá desceram a pelejar contra os cananeus, que habitavam nas montanhas, e no sul, e nas planícies.10 E partiu Judá contra os cananeus que habitavam em Hebrom (era porém outrora o nome de Hebrom, Quiriate-Arba), e feriram a Sesai, e a Aimã e Talmai.11 E dali partiu contra os moradores de Debir; e era outrora o nome de Debir, Quiriate-Sefer.12 E disse Calebe: Quem ferir a Quiriate-Sefer, e a tomar, lhe darei a minha filha Acsa por mulher.13 E tomou-a Otniel, filho de Quenaz, o irmão de Calebe, mais novo do que ele; e Calebe lhe deu a sua filha Acsa por mulher.14 E sucedeu que, indo ela a ele, o persuadiu que pedisse um campo a seu pai; e ela desceu do jumento, e Calebe lhe disse: Que é que tens?15 E ela lhe disse: Dá-me uma bênção; pois me deste uma terra seca, dá-me também fontes de águas. E Calebe lhe deu as fontes superiores e as fontes inferiores.16 Também os filhos do queneu, sogro de Moisés, subiram da cidade das palmeiras com os filhos de Judá ao deserto de Judá, que está ao sul de Arade, e foram, e habitaram com o povo.17 E foi Judá com Simeão, seu irmão, e feriram aos cananeus que habitavam em Zefate; e totalmente a destruíram, e chamou-se o nome desta cidade Hormá.18 Tomou mais Judá a Gaza com o seu termo, e a Ascalom com o seu termo, e a Ecrom com o seu termo.19 E estava o Senhor com Judá, e despovoou as montanhas; porém não expulsou aos moradores do vale, porquanto tinham carros de ferro.20 E deram Hebrom a Calebe, como Moisés o dissera; e dali expulsou os três filhos de Anaque.21 Porém os filhos de Benjamim não expulsaram os jebuseus que habitavam em Jerusalém; antes os jebuseus ficaram habitando com os filhos de Benjamim em Jerusalém, até ao dia de hoje,22 E subiu também a casa de José contra Betel, e foi o Senhor com eles.23 E a casa de José mandou espias a Betel, e foi antes o nome desta cidade Luz.24 E viram os espias a um homem, que saía da cidade, e lhe disseram: Ora, mostra-nos a entrada da cidade, e usaremos contigo de misericórdia.25 E, mostrando-lhes ele a entrada da cidade, feriram-na ao fio da espada; porém àquele homem e a toda a sua família deixaram ir.26 Então aquele homem se foi à terra dos heteus, e edificou uma cidade, e chamou o seu nome Luz; este é o seu nome até ao dia de hoje.27 Manassés não expulsou os habitantes de Bete-Seã, nem mesmo dos lugares da sua jurisdição; nem a Taanaque, com os lugares da sua jurisdição; nem os moradores de Dor, com os lugares da sua jurisdição; nem os moradores de Ibleão, com os lugares da sua jurisdição; nem os moradores de Megido, com os lugares da sua jurisdição; e resolveram os cananeus habitar na mesma terra.28 E sucedeu que, quando Israel cobrou mais forças, fez dos cananeus tributários; porém não os expulsou de todo.29 Tampouco expulsou Efraim os cananeus que habitavam em Gezer; antes os cananeus ficaram habitando com ele, em Gezer.30 Tampouco expulsou Zebulom os moradores de Quitrom, nem os moradores de Naalol; porém os cananeus ficaram habitando com ele, e foram tributários.31 Tampouco Aser expulsou os moradores de Aco, nem os moradores de Sidom; como nem de Alabe, nem de Aczibe, nem de Helba, nem de Afeque, nem de Reobe;32 Porém os aseritas habitaram no meio dos cananeus que habitavam na terra; porquanto não os expulsaram.33 Tampouco Naftali expulsou os moradores de Bete-Semes, nem os moradores de Bete-Anate; mas habitou no meio dos cananeus que habitavam na terra; porém lhes foram tributários os moradores de Bete-Semes e Bete-Anate.34 E os amorreus impeliram os filhos de Dã até às montanhas; porque nem os deixavam descer ao vale.35 Também os amorreus quiseram habitar nas montanhas de Heres, em Aijalom e em Saalbim; porém prevaleceu a mão da casa de José, e ficaram tributários.36 E foi o termo dos amorreus desde a subida de Acrabim, desde a penha, e dali para cima.

1 And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites at the first, to fight against them?2 And the Lord said, Judah shall go up; behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, and we will fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.4 And Judah went up; and the Lord delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they smote of them in Bezek ten thousand men.5 And they found Adoni–bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him, and they smote the Canaanites and the Perizzites.6 But Adoni–bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.7 And Adoni–bezek said, Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered food under my table: as I have done, so hath God requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.8 And the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and captured it, and they smote it with the edge of the sword, and the city they set on fire.9 And afterward did the children of Judah go down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the lowlands.10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron; now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiryath–arba’;and they smote Sheshai, and Achiman, and Talmai.11 And he went from there against the inhabitants of Debir; and the name of Debir was formerly Kiryath–sepher:12 And Caleb said, He that will smite Kiryath–sepher, and capture it, to him will I give ‘Achsah my daughter for wife.13 And ‘Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, captured it: and he gave him ‘Achsah his daughter for wife.14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What aileth thee?15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a dry land: give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.16 And the children of the Kenite, the father–in–law of Moses, went up out of the city of palm–trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is at the south of ‘Arad; and they went and dwelt with the people.17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they smote the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and devoted it. And the name of the city was called Chormah.18 And Judah captured Gazzah with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and ‘Ekron with its territory.19 And the Lord was with Judah; and he took possession of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses had spoken; and he drove out thence the three sons of ‘Anak.21 And the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem, the children of Benjamin did not drive out; but the Jebusites dwelt with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this day.22 And the house of Joseph, these also, went up against Beth–el; and the Lord was with them.23 And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Beth–el: now the name of the city formerly was Luz.24 And the watchers saw a man coming forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will show thee kindness.25 And he showed them the entrance into the city, and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but the man and all his family they let go free.26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called its name Luz: this is its name unto this day.27 Neither did Menasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth–shean and its towns, nor Ta’anach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Yible’am and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites succeeded to remain in this land.28 And it came to pass, when Israel became strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but they did not drive them out entirely.29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; and the Canaanites dwelt in the midst of them at Gezer.30 Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; and the Canaanites dwelt in the midst of them, and became tributary.31 Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of ‘Akko, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Achlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Chelbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rechob;32 And the Asherites dwelt in the midst of the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out.33 Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth–shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth–’anath; and he dwelt in the midst of the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth–shemesh and of Beth–anath became tributary unto them.34 And the Emorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain; for they would not suffer them to come down into the valley;35 And the Emorites succeeded to remain on mount Cheres, in Ayalon, and in Sha’albim; but when the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, they became tributary.36 And the territory of the Emorites was from the ascent of ‘Akrabbim, from the Rock upward.
