1 Então Jerubaal (que é Gideão) se levantou de madrugada, e todo o povo que com ele havia, e se acamparam junto à fonte de Harode, de maneira que tinha o arraial dos midianitas para o norte, no vale, perto do outeiro de Moré.2 E disse o Senhor a Gideão: Muito é o povo que está contigo, para eu dar aos midianitas em sua mão; a fim de que Israel não se glorie contra mim, dizendo: A minha mão me livrou.3 Agora, pois, apregoa aos ouvidos do povo, dizendo: Quem for medroso e tímido, volte, e retire-se apressadamente das montanhas de Gileade. Então voltaram do povo vinte e dois mil, e dez mil ficaram.4 E disse o Senhor a Gideão: Ainda há muito povo; faze-os descer às águas, e ali os provarei; e será que, daquele de que eu te disser: Este irá contigo, esse contigo irá; porém de todo aquele, de que eu te disser: Este não irá contigo, esse não irá.5 E fez descer o povo às águas. Então o Senhor disse a Gideão: Qualquer que lamber as águas com a sua língua, como as lambe o cão, esse porás à parte; como também a todo aquele que se abaixar de joelhos a beber.6 E foi o número dos que lamberam, levando a mão à boca, trezentos homens; e todo o restante do povo se abaixou de joelhos a beber as águas.7 E disse o Senhor a Gideão: Com estes trezentos homens que lamberam as águas vos livrarei, e darei os midianitas na tua mão; portanto, todos os demais se retirem, cada um ao seu lugar.8 E o povo tomou na sua mão a provisão e as suas trombetas, e enviou a todos os outros homens de Israel cada um à sua tenda, porém os trezentos homens reteve; e estava o arraial dos midianitas embaixo, no vale.9 E sucedeu que, naquela mesma noite, o Senhor lhe disse: Levanta-te, e desce ao arraial, porque o tenho dado na tua mão.10 E, se ainda temes descer, desce tu e teu moço Purá, ao arraial;11 E ouvirás o que dizem, e então, fortalecidas as tuas mãos descerás ao arraial. Então desceu ele com o seu moço Purá até ao extremo das sentinelas que estavam no arraial.12 E os midianitas, os amalequitas, e todos os filhos do oriente jaziam no vale como gafanhotos em multidão; e eram inumeráveis os seus camelos, como a areia que há na praia do mar, em multidão.13 Chegando, pois, Gideão, eis que estava contando um homem ao seu companheiro um sonho, e dizia: Eis que tive um sonho, eis que um pão de cevada torrado rodava pelo arraial dos midianitas, e chegava até à tenda, e a feriu, e caiu, e a transtornou de cima para baixo; e ficou caída.14 E respondeu o seu companheiro, e disse: Não é isto outra coisa, senão a espada de Gideão, filho de Joás, varão israelita. Deus tem dado na sua mão aos midianitas, e todo este arraial.15 E sucedeu que, ouvindo Gideão a narração deste sonho, e a sua explicação, adorou; e voltou ao arraial de Israel, e disse: Levantai-vos, porque o Senhor tem dado o arraial dos midianitas nas nossas mãos.16 Então dividiu os trezentos homens em três companhias; e deu-lhes a cada um, nas suas mãos, trombetas, e cântaros vazios, com tochas acesas dentro dos cântaros.17 E disse-lhes: Olhai para mim, e fazei como eu fizer; e eis que, chegando eu à extremidade do arraial, será que, como eu fizer, assim fareis vós.18 Tocando eu a trombeta, eu e todos os que comigo estiverem, então também vós tocareis a trombeta ao redor de todo o arraial, e direis: Espada do Senhor, e de Gideão.19 Chegou, pois, Gideão, e os cem homens que com ele iam, ao extremo do arraial, ao princípio da vigília da meia-noite, havendo sido de pouco trocadas as guardas; então tocaram as trombetas, e quebraram os cântaros, que tinham nas mãos.20 Assim tocaram as três companhias as trombetas, e quebraram os cântaros; e tinham nas suas mãos esquerdas as tochas acesas, e nas suas mãos direitas as trombetas, para tocarem, e clamaram: Espada do Senhor, e de Gideão.21 E conservou-se cada um no seu lugar ao redor do arraial; então todo o exército pôs-se a correr e, gritando, fugiu.22 Tocando, pois, os trezentos as trombetas, o Senhor tornou a espada de um contra o outro, e isto em todo o arraial, e o arraial fugiu para Zererá, até Bete-Sita, até aos limites de Abel-Meolá, acima de Tabate.23 Então os homens de Israel, de Naftali, de Aser e de todo o Manassés foram convocados, e perseguiram aos midianitas.24 Também Gideão enviou mensageiros a todas as montanhas de Efraim, dizendo: Descei ao encontro dos midianitas, e tomai-lhes as águas até Bete-Bara, e também o Jordão. Convocados, pois, todos os homens de Efraim, tomaram-lhes as águas até Bete-Bara e o Jordão.25 E prenderam a dois príncipes dos midianitas, a Orebe e a Zeebe; e mataram a Orebe na penha de Orebe, e a Zeebe mataram no lagar de Zeebe, e perseguiram aos midianitas; e trouxeram as cabeças de Orebe e de Zeebe a Gideão, além do Jordão.

1 Then Yerubba’al, who is Gid’on, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Charod; and the camp of the Midianites was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.2 And the Lord said unto Gid’on, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand: lest Israel should vaunt themselves against me, saying, my own hand hath saved me.3 Now therefore, do proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gil’ad. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and ten thousand remained.4 And the Lord said unto Gid’on, The people are yet too many; let them go down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I will say unto thee, This one shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee: and of whomsoever I will say unto thee, This one shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.5 So he caused the people to go down unto the water: and the Lord said unto Gid’on, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as the dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that bendeth down upon his knees to drink.6 And the number of those that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people bent down upon their knees to drink water.7 And the Lord said unto Gid’on, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thy hand; and let all the other people go every man unto his place.8 And they took the provision of the people in their hand, and their cornets; and all the rest of Israel he dismissed, every man unto his tent; but those three hundred men he retained: and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.9 And it came to pass, during the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Arise, get thee down into the camp; for I have delivered it into thy hand.10 And if thou fear to go down, then go thou down with Purah thy servant to the camp.11 And thou shalt hear what they will say; and after that shall thy hands be strengthened, and thou wilt go down unto the camp. And he went down with Purah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the camp.12 And the Midianites and the ‘Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like the locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is by the seaside for multitude.13 And when Gid’on was come, behold, a man was telling a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream, and, lo, a baked cake of barley bread was rolling round through the camp of Midian, and came unto the tent, and struck against it so that it fell, and it turned it bottom upward, and the tent thus tumbled down.14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gid’on the son of Joash, a man of Israel; into whose hand God hath delivered Midian, and the whole camp.15 And it was, when Gid’on heard the narration of the dream, and its interpretation, that he prostrated himself, and returned unto the camp of Israel, and said, Arise; for the Lord hath delivered into your hand the camp of Midian.16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put cornets in the hand of all of them, with empty pitchers, and torches in the pitchers.17 And he said unto them, What you see me do, do ye likewise; and, behold, when I am come to the edge of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.18 When I blow the cornet, I and all that are with me, then shall ye blow the cornets also on every side of all the camp, and say, For the Lord, and for Gid’on.19 And Gid’on, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the edge of the camp in the bcginning of the middle watch; when they had but newly set the sentinels: and they blew the cornets, and broke the pitchers that were in their hand.20 And the three companies blew the cornets, and broke the pitchers, and seized with their left hand the torches, and with their right hand the cornets to blow; and they cried, The sword for the Lord, and for Gid’on.21 And they remained standing every man in his place round about the camp; and all in the camp ran, and shouted, and fled.22 And as the three hundred cornets sounded, the Lord set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the camp; and those in the camp fled as far as Beth–hashittah to Zererah, up to the border of Abelmecholah, near Tabbath.23 And the men of Israel were called together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Menasseh, and they pursued after the Midianites.24 And Gid’on sent messengers throughout all the mountain of Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and seize from them the waters as far as Beth–barah and the Jordan. And all the men of Ephraim assembled themselves, and seized on the waters as far as Beth–barah and the Jordan.25 And they captured two princes of the Midianites, ‘Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew ‘Oreb upon the rock ‘Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued the Midianites; and the heads of ‘Oreb and Zeeb they brought to Gid’on from the other side of the Jordan.
