1 Naqueles dias não havia rei em Israel; e nos mesmos dias a tribo dos danitas buscava para si herança para habitar; porquanto até àquele dia entre as tribos de Israel não lhe havia caído por sorte sua herança.2 E enviaram os filhos de Dã, da sua tribo, cinco homens dentre eles, homens valorosos, de Zorá e de Estaol, a espiar e reconhecer a terra, e lhes disseram: Ide, reconhecei a terra. E chegaram à montanha de Efraim, até à casa de Mica, e passaram ali a noite.3 E quando eles estavam junto da casa de Mica, reconheceram a voz do moço, do levita; e dirigindo-se para lá, lhe disseram: Quem te trouxe aqui? Que fazes aqui? E que é que tens aqui?4 E ele lhes disse: Assim e assim me tem feito Mica; pois me tem contratado, e eu lhe sirvo de sacerdote.5 Então lhe disseram: Consulta a Deus, para que possamos saber se prosperará o caminho que seguimos.6 E disse-lhes o sacerdote: Ide em paz; o caminho que seguis está perante o Senhor.7 Então foram-se aqueles cinco homens, e chegaram a Laís; e viram que o povo que havia no meio dela estava seguro, conforme ao costume dos sidônios, quieto e confiado; nem havia autoridade alguma do reino que por qualquer coisa envergonhasse a alguém naquela terra; também estavam longe dos sidônios, e não tinham relação com ninguém.8 Então voltaram a seus irmãos, a Zorá e a Estaol, e seus irmãos lhes disseram: Que dizeis vós?9 E eles disseram: Levantai-vos, e subamos contra eles; porque examinamos a terra, e eis que é muitíssimo boa. E vós estareis aqui tranquilos? Não sejais preguiçosos em irdes para entrar a possuir esta terra.10 Quando lá chegardes, vereis um povo confiado, e a terra é larga de extensão; porque Deus vo-la entregou nas mãos; lugar em que não há falta de coisa alguma que há na terra.11 Então partiram dali, da tribo dos danitas, de Zorá e de Estaol, seiscentos homens munidos de armas de guerra.12 E subiram, e acamparam-se em Quiriate-Jearim, em Judá; então chamaram a este lugar Maané-Dã, até ao dia de hoje; eis que está por detrás de Quiriate-Jearim.13 E dali passaram à montanha de Efraim; e chegaram até a casa de Mica.14 Então responderam os cinco homens, que foram espiar a terra de Laís, e disseram a seus irmãos: Sabeis vós também que naquelas casas há um éfode, e terafins, e uma imagem de escultura e uma de fundição? Vede, pois, agora o que haveis de fazer.15 Então se dirigiram para lá, e chegaram à casa do moço, o levita, em casa de Mica, e o saudaram.16 E os seiscentos homens, que eram dos filhos de Dã, munidos com suas armas de guerra, ficaram à entrada da porta.17 Porém subindo os cinco homens, que foram espiar a terra, entraram ali, e tomaram a imagem de escultura, o éfode, e os terafins, e a imagem de fundição, ficando o sacerdote em pé à entrada da porta, com os seiscentos homens que estavam munidos com as armas de guerra.18 Entrando eles, pois, em casa de Mica, e tomando a imagem de escultura, e o éfode, e os terafins, e a imagem de fundição, disse-lhes o sacerdote: Que estais fazendo?19 E eles lhe disseram: Cala-te, põe a mão na boca, e vem conosco, e sê-nos por pai e sacerdote. É melhor ser sacerdote da casa de um só homem, do que ser sacerdote de uma tribo e de uma família em Israel?20 Então alegrou-se o coração do sacerdote, e tomou o éfode, e os terafins, e a imagem de escultura; e entrou no meio do povo.21 Assim viraram, e partiram; e os meninos, e o gado, e a bagagem puseram diante de si.22 E, estando já longe da casa de Mica, os homens que estavam nas casas junto à casa de Mica, reuniram-se, e alcançaram os filhos de Dã.23 E clamaram após os filhos de Dã, os quais viraram os seus rostos, e disseram a Mica: Que tens, que tanta gente convocaste?24 Então ele disse: Os meus deuses, que eu fiz, me tomastes, juntamente com o sacerdote, e partistes; que mais me resta agora? Como, pois, me dizeis: Que é que tens?25 Porém os filhos de Dã lhe disseram: Não nos faças ouvir a tua voz, para que porventura homens de ânimo mau não se lancem sobre vós, e tu percas a tua vida, e a vida dos da tua casa.26 Assim seguiram o seu caminho os filhos de Dã; e Mica, vendo que eram mais fortes do que ele, virou-se, e voltou à sua casa.27 Eles, pois, tomaram o que Mica tinha feito, e o sacerdote que tivera, e chegaram a Laís, a um povo quieto e confiado, e os feriram ao fio da espada, e queimaram a cidade a fogo.28 E ninguém houve que os livrasse, porquanto estavam longe de Sidom, e não tinham relações com ninguém, e a cidade estava no vale que está junto de Bete-Reobe; depois reedificaram a cidade e habitaram nela.29 E chamaram o nome da cidade Dã, conforme ao nome de Dã, seu pai, que nascera a Israel; era, porém, antes o nome desta cidade Laís.30 E os filhos de Dã levantaram para si aquela imagem de escultura; e Jônatas, filho de Gérson, o filho de Manassés, ele e seus filhos foram sacerdotes da tribo dos danitas, até ao dia do cativeiro da terra.31 Assim, pois, estabeleceram para si a imagem de escultura, que fizera Mica, por todos os dias em que a casa de Deus esteve em Siló.

1 In those days there was no king in Israel; and in those days the tribe of the Danites were seeking for themselves an inheritance to dwell in; for there had not fallen to their share up to that day among the tribes of Israel a sufficient inheritance.2 And the children of Dan sent from their family five men from among themselves, men of valor, from Zor’ah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land. And they came to the mountain of Ephraim, as far as the house of Micah, and lodged there.3 They were just by the house of Micah, when they recognized the voice of the young man the Levite; and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what doest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?4 And he said unto them, Thus and thus hath Micah done unto me; and he hired me, and I became his priest.5 And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way on which we are going shall be prosperous.6 And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the Lord is your way on which ye will go.7 And the five men departed, and came to Layish, and saw the people that were therein, dwelling in security, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and no one inflicted any wrong in the land, as hereditary ruler; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no concern with any man.8 And they came unto their brethren to Zor’ah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What news bring ye?9 And they said, Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and you keep still! be not slothful, to go, to enter to take possession of the land.10 When ye enter, ye will come unto a secure people, and the land is roomy; for God hath given it into your hand; a place where there is no want of anything that is on the earth.11 And there went from there of the family of the Danites, out of Zor’ah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men girded with weapons of war.12 And they went up, and encamped in Kiryath–ye’arim, in Judah; wherefore they called that place Machaneh–dan until this day; behold, it is behind Kiryath–ye’arim.13 And they passed thence unto the mountain of Ephraim, and came as far as the house of Micah.14 Then commenced the five men that had gone to spy out the country of Layish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there are in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven and molten image? and now consider what ye have to do.15 And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, unto the house of Micah, and asked him after his welfare.16 And the six hundred men who were of the children of Dan, girded with their weapons of war, remained standing by the entrance of the gate.17 And the five men that had gone to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest stood in the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men that were girded with the weapons of war.18 And these went into Micah’s house, and took the graven image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest said unto them, What are ye doing?19 And they said unto him, Be still, lay thy hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and become to us a father and a priest: is it better that thou be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?20 And the priest’s heart became glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and came into the midst of the people.21 And they turned and went away, and placed the little ones and the cattle and the heavy things before them.22 When they were at a distance from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah’s house were called together, and they overtook the children of Dan.23 And they called unto the children of Dan, who turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou hast called out thy people?24 And he said, My god which I made have ye taken away, and the priest, and are gone away; and what have I more? and what is this ye say unto me, What aileth thee?25 And the children of Dan said unto him, Cause not thy voice to be heard among us, lest men of an embittered spirit assail thee, and thou lose thy life, with the life of thy household.26 And the children of Dan went on their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.27 And they took what Micah had made, and the priest whom he had had, and came over Layish, over a people that were quiet and secure; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and the city they burnt with fire.28 And there was no deliverer; because it was far from Zidon, and the people had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth–rechob. And they rebuilt the city, and dwelt therein.29 And they called the name of the city, Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: nevertheless, Layish was the name of the city at first.30 And the children of Dan erected for themselves the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Menasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the exile of the land.31 And they set up for themselves Micah’s graven image, which he had made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
