1 Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:
2 Thus said the LORD that made you, and formed you from the womb, which will help you; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and you, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour water on him that is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground: I will pour my spirit on your seed, and my blessing on your offspring:
4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.
5 One shall say, I am the LORD'; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand to the LORD, and surname himself by the name of Israel.
6 Thus said the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them show to them.
8 Fear you not, neither be afraid: have not I told you from that time, and have declared it? you are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yes, there is no God; I know not any.
9 They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.
10 Who has formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing?
11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.
12 The smith with the tongs both works in the coals, and fashions it with hammers, and works it with the strength of his arms: yes, he is hungry, and his strength fails: he drinks no water, and is faint.
13 The carpenter stretches out his rule; he marks it out with a line; he fits it with planes, and he marks it out with the compass, and makes it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.
14 He hews him down cedars, and takes the cypress and the oak, which he strengthens for himself among the trees of the forest: he plants an ash, and the rain does nourish it.
15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yes, he kindles it, and bakes bread; yes, he makes a god, and worships it; he makes it a graven image, and falls down thereto.
16 He burns part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eats flesh; he roasts roast, and is satisfied: yes, he warms himself, and said, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:
17 And the residue thereof he makes a god, even his graven image: he falls down to it, and worships it, and prays to it, and said, Deliver me; for you are my god.
18 They have not known nor understood: for he has shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.
19 And none considers in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yes, also I have baked bread on the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
20 He feeds on ashes: a deceived heart has turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
21 Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for you are my servant: I have formed you; you are my servant: O Israel, you shall not be forgotten of me.
22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, your transgressions, and, as a cloud, your sins: return to me; for I have redeemed you.
23 Sing, O you heavens; for the LORD has done it: shout, you lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, you mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the LORD has redeemed Jacob, and glorified himself in Israel.
24 Thus said the LORD, your redeemer, and he that formed you from the womb, I am the LORD that makes all things; that stretches forth the heavens alone; that spreads abroad the earth by myself;
25 That frustrates the tokens of the liars, and makes diviners mad; that turns wise men backward, and makes their knowledge foolish;
26 That confirms the word of his servant, and performes the counsel of his messengers; that said to Jerusalem, You shall be inhabited; and to the cities of Judah, You shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed places thereof:
27 That said to the deep, Be dry, and I will dry up your rivers:
28 That said of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, You shall be built; and to the temple, Your foundation shall be laid.
1 ORA dunque ascolta, o Giacobbe, mio servitore; e tu, Israele, che io ho eletto.
2 Così ha detto il Signore, tuo Fattore, e tuo Formatore fin dal ventre, il qual ti aiuta: Non temere, o Giacobbe, mio servitore; e tu, Iesurun, che io ho eletto.
3 Perciocchè io spanderò dell’acque sopra l’assetato, e dei rivi sopra la terra asciutta; io spanderò il mio Spirito sopra la tua progenie, e la mia benedizione sopra quelli che usciranno di te.
4 Ed essi germoglieranno fra l’erba, come salci presso a’ rivi delle acque.
5 L’uno dirà: Io son del Signore; e l’altro si nominerà del nome di Giacobbe; e l’altro si sottoscriverà di sua mano del Signore, e si soprannominerà del nome d’Israele.
6 Così ha detto il Signore, il Re d’Israele, e suo Redentore, il Signor degli eserciti: Io sono il primiero, ed io son l’ultimo; e non vi è Dio alcuno fuor che me.
7 E chi è come me, che abbia chiamato, e dichiarato, e ordinato quello, da che io stabilii il popolo antico? annunzino loro que’ dii le cose future, e quelle che avverranno.
8 Non vi spaventate, e non vi smarrite; non ti ho io fatte intendere, e dichiarate queste cose ab antico? e voi me ne siete testimoni; evvi alcun Dio, fuor che me? non vi è alcun’altra Rocca, io non ne conosco alcuna
9 Gli artefici delle sculture son tutti quanti vanità; e i lor cari idoli non giovano nulla; ed essi son testimoni a sè stessi che quelli non vedono, e non conoscono; acciocchè sieno confusi.
10 Chi ha formato un dio? e chi ha fusa una scultura? Ella non gioverà nulla.
11 Ecco, tutti i compagni di un tale uomo saranno confusi, e insieme gli artefici, che son fra gli uomini; aduninsi pure, e presentinsi tutti quanti; sì, saranno tutti insieme spaventati, e confusi.
12 Il ferraiuolo adopera la lima, e lo scarpello, e lavora col carbone, e forma la scultura co’ martelli; ed anche, mentre la lavora con la forza del suo braccio, ha fame, e le forze gli mancano; egli non beve acqua, e si stanca.
13 Il legnaiuolo stende il regolo, disegna la scultura con la sinopia, la lavora con asce, e la disegna con la sesta, e la fa alla somiglianza umana, secondo la gloria dell’uomo; acciocchè dimori in casa.
14 Tagliando de’ cedri, egli prende un elce, ed una quercia, e li lascia fortificar fra gli alberi di una selva; egli pianta un frassino salvatico, il qual la pioggia fa crescere.
15 E quegli alberi servono all’uomo per bruciare; ed egli ne prende una parte, e se ne scalda; ed anche ne accende del fuoco, e ne cuoce del pane; ed anche ne fa un dio, e l’adora; ne fa una scultura, e le s’inchina.
16 Egli ne avrà bruciata la metà al fuoco, col mezzo dell’altra metà egli avrà mangiata della carne, ed avrà arrostito l’arrosto, e si sarà saziato; ed anche, dopo essersi scaldato, dirà: Eia! io mi sono scaldato; io ho veduto il fuoco.
17 Poi impiega il rimanente a fare un dio, in una sua scultura, alla quale egli s’inchina, e l’adora, e gli fa orazione, e dice: Liberami; perciocchè tu sei il mio dio.
18 Essi non hanno conoscimento, nè intendimento alcuno; perciocchè i loro occhi sono incrostati, per non vedere; e i lor cuori, per non intendere.
19 E non si recano la cosa al cuore, e non hanno conoscimento, nè intendimento alcuno, per dire: Io ho arsa col fuoco la metà di questo, ed anche ho cotto del pane su le brace di esso: io ne ho arrostita della carne, e l’ho mangiata; farei io del rimanente di esso una cosa abbominevole? m’inchinerei io davanti ad un tronco di legno?
20 Essi si pascono di cenere, il cuor sedotto li travia; e non rinfrancano mai l’anima loro, e non dicono: Questo che io ho nella destra, non è egli una cosa falsa?
21 RICORDATI di queste cose, o Giacobbe, e Israele; perciocchè tu sei mio servitore, io ti ho formato, tu sei mio servitore; Israele, non dimenticarmi.
22 Io ho cancellati i tuoi misfatti, a guisa di una nuvola; ed i tuoi peccati, a guisa di una nube; convertiti a me, perciocchè io ti ho riscattato.
23 Cantate, o cieli; perciocchè il Signore ha operato; giubilate, luoghi bassi della terra; risonate grida di allegrezza, monti, selve, e tutti gli alberi che sono in esse; perciocchè il Signore ha riscattato Giacobbe, e si è reso glorioso in Israele.
24 Così ha detto il Signore, tuo Redentore, e tuo Formatore fin dal ventre: Io sono il Signore, che ho fatta ogni cosa, che ho distesi i cieli solo, ed ho appianata la terra, senza che alcuno sia stato meco;
25 che annullo i segni de’ bugiardi, e fo impazzar gl’indovini; che fo andare a ritroso i savi, e rendo stolto il loro conoscimento;
26 che confermo la parola del mio servitore, e adempio il consiglio de’ miei Angeli; che dico a Gerusalemme: Tu sarai abitata; ed alle città di Giuda: Voi sarete riedificate; ed io ridirizzerò le sue ruine;
27 che dico al profondo mare: Seccati; e che asciugherò i suoi fiumi;
28 che dico a Ciro: Mio pastore; e fo ch’egli adempierà tutta la mia volontà, per dire a Gerusalemme: Tu sarai riedificata; ed al tempio: Tu sarai di nuovo fondato
