1 Then spake Jesus to the multitudes and to his disciples, 2 saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat: 3 all things therefore whatsoever they bid you, these do and observe: but do not ye after their works; for they say, and do not. 4 Yea, they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with their finger. 5 But all their works they do to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 6 and love the chief place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 and the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called of men, Rabbi. 8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your teacher, and all ye are brethren. 9 And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, even he who is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your master, even the Christ. 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled; and whosoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter. 14

15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is become so, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves.

16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, that say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor. 17 Ye fools and blind: for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that hath sanctified the gold? 18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, he is a debtor. 19 Ye blind: for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? 20 He therefore that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. 21 And he that sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. 22 And he that sweareth by the heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe mint and anise and cummin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, justice, and mercy, and faith: but these ye ought to have done, and not to have left the other undone. 24 Ye blind guides, that strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel!

25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full from extortion and excess. 26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the platter, that the outside thereof may become clean also.

27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but inwardly ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and garnish the tombs of the righteous, 30 and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we should not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 Wherefore ye witness to yourselves, that ye are sons of them that slew the prophets. 32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. 33 Ye serpents, ye offspring of vipers, how shall ye escape the judgment of hell? 34 Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them shall ye kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city: 35 that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous unto the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar. 36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! 38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. 39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

1 Siis rääkis Jeesus rahvale ja Oma jüngritele

2 ning ütles: „Moosese istmel istuvad kirjatundjad ja variserid.

3 Kõike nüüd, mis nad iganes teile ütlevad, seda tehke ja pidage, aga nende tegude järele ärge tehke, sest nad ütlevad küll, aga ei tee;

4 nad seovad kokku raskeid ja ränki koormaid ja panevad neid inimeste õlgadele, aga ise nad ei taha sõrmegagi neid liigutada.

5 Kõik oma teod nad teevad selleks, et inimesed neid näeksid; sest nad teevad oma palvekaukad laiad ja oma rüüde tupsud suured.

6 Nad armastavad ülemat paika lauas võõruspidudel ja esimesi istmeid kogudusekodades,

7 ja teretusi turgudel ja et inimesed neid kutsuksid „Rabi!"

8 Aga teie ärge laske endid hüüda rabiks, sest üks on teie õpetaja; aga teie kõik olete vennad.

9 Ja ärge te kutsuge kedagi maa peal oma isaks, sest üks on teie Isa, Kes on taevas.

10 Ja ärge te laske ka endid kutsuda juhatajaks, sest üks on teie Juhataja — Kristus!

11 Aga kes on ülem teie seast, see olgu teie teenija.

12 Sest kes ennast ise ülendab, seda alandatakse, ja kes ennast ise alandab, seda ülendatakse.

13 Aga häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, et te sulete Taevariigi inimeste eest! Ise te ei lähe sisse ega lase sisse minna neid, kes tahavad sisse minna.

14 Häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, et te sööte ära leskede hooned ja loete silmakirjaks pikki palveid! Sellepärast te langete seda raskema kohtu alla.

15 Häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, et te käite läbi mered ja maad, et saavutada ühegi, kes heidab teie usku; ja kui ta on heitnud, siis te teete tast põrgulapse, kaks korda hullema kui te ise olete!

16 Häda teile, te sõgedad teejuhid, kes ütlete: Kes iganes vannub templi juures, sellel ei ole sest midagi, aga kes vannub templi kulla juures, sellel on kohustus!

17 Te jõledad ja sõgedad! Sest kumb on suurem, kuld või tempel, mis kulda pühitseb?

18 Ja: Kes iganes vannub altari juures, sellel ei ole sest midagi; aga kes vannub annetuse juures, mis on seal peal, sellel on kohustus!

19 Te jõledad ja sõgedad! Sest kumb on suurem, ohver või altar, mis ohvrit pühitseb?

20 Seepärast, kes vannub altari juures, vannub tema juures ja kõige selle juures, mis tema peal on.

21 Ja kes vannub templi juures, see vannub tema ja Selle juures, Kes seal elab.

22 Ja kes vannub taeva juures, see vannub Jumala aujärje juures ja Tema juures, Kes sellel istub.

23 Häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, et te maksate kümnist mündist ja tillist ja köömnest ja jätate kõrvale, mis on tähtsaim käsuõpetuses, õigluse ja halastuse ja ustavuse! Seda tuleks teha, aga teist mitte jätta tegemata.

24 Te sõgedad teejuhid, kes kurnate sääski, aga neelate alla kaameleid!

25 Häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, et te karika ja vaagna teete puhtaks väljastpoolt, aga seestpoolt on need täis röövi ja aplust!

26 Sa sõge variser! Tee esmalt karikas puhtaks seestpoolt, et see ka väljastpoolt saaks puhtaks!

27 Häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, et te olete lubjatud haudade sarnased, mis kull väljastpoolt on nägusad, aga seestpoolt on täis surnute luid ja kõike räpasust!

28 Nõnda olete ka teie küll väljastpoolt näha õiged inimeste ees, kuid seestpoolt te olete täis salalikku meelt ja ülekohut.

29 Häda teile, kirjatundjad ja variserid, te silmakirjatsejad, et te ehitate prohvetite haudu ja kaunistate õigete hauasambaid

30 ja ütlete: Kui me oleksime elanud oma esiisade ajal, ei meie küll nende osalised oleks olnud prohvetite verd valamas!

31 Nõnda te siis tunnistate iseeneste vastu, et te olete nende lapsed, kes tapsid prohveteid!

32 Et täitke siis ka oma vanemate mõõt!

33 Te maod, te rästikute sigitis, kuidas te põgenete põrgu hukatuse eest?

34 Seepärast, vaata, Ma läkitan teie juure prohveteid ja tarku ja kirjatundjaid! Ja muist neist te tapate ja lööte risti, ja muist neist te piitsutate oma kogudusekodades ja kiusate neid taga ühest linnast teise,

35 et teie peale tuleks kõik vaga veri, mis on valatud maa peal alates õige Aabeli verest Sakarja, Berekja poja vereni, kelle te tapsite templi ja altari vahel.

36 Tõesti Ma ütlen teile, see kõik tuleb sellesinase sugupõlve peale!

37 Jeruusalem, Jeruusalem, kes tapad prohvetid ja viskad kividega surnuks need, kes sinu juure on läkitatud! Kui mitu korda Ma olen tahtnud su lapsi koguda, otsegu kana kogub oma pojukesi tiibade alla, ja teie ei ole tahtnud!

38 Vaata, teie koda jäetakse teil maha!

39 Sest Mina ütlen teile: Nüüdsest peale ei saa te Mind näha, seni kui te ütlete: Õnnistatud olgu, kes tuleb Issanda nimel!"
