Philippians 1

1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus that are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 I thank my God upon all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every supplication of mine on behalf of you all making my supplication with joy, 5 for your fellowship in furtherance of the gospel from the first day until now; 6 being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Jesus Christ: 7 even as it is right for me to be thus minded on behalf of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as, both in my bonds and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers with me of grace. 8 For God is my witness, how I long after you all in the tender mercies of Christ Jesus. 9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment; 10 so that ye may approve the things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and void of offence unto the day of Christ; 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

12 Now I would have you know, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the progress of the gospel; 13 so that my bonds became manifest in Christ throughout the whole prætorian guard, and to all the rest; 14 and that most of the brethren in the Lord, being confident through my bonds, are more abundantly bold to speak the word of God without fear. 15 Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: 16 the one do it of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel; 17 but the other proclaim Christ of faction, not sincerely, thinking to raise up affliction for me in my bonds. 18 What then? only that in every way, whether in pretence or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and therein I rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. 19 For I know that this shall turn out to my salvation, through your supplication and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my earnest expectation and hope, that in nothing shall I be put to shame, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by death. 21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if to live in the flesh,—if this shall bring fruit from my work, then what I shall choose I know not. 23 But I am in a strait betwixt the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ; for it is very far better: 24 yet to abide in the flesh is more needful for your sake. 25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide, yea, and abide with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith; 26 that your glorying may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my presence with you again. 27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ: that, whether I come and see you or be absent, I may hear of your state, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one soul striving for the faith of the gospel; 28 and in nothing affrighted by the adversaries: which is for them an evident token of perdition, but of your salvation, and that from God; 29 because to you it hath been granted in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer in his behalf: 30 having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

1 Paul et Timothée, serviteurs de Jésus-Christ, à tous les saints en Jésus-Christ, qui sont à Philippes, aux évêques et aux diacres,

2 Que la grâce et la paix vous soient données de la part de Dieu notre Père, et de Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur.

3 Je rends grâces à mon Dieu, toutes les fois que je me souviens de vous;

4 Priant toujours pour vous tous avec joie, dans toutes les prières que je fais,

5 A cause de votre attachement à l’évangile, depuis le premier jour que vous l’avez reçu, jusqu’à maintenant;

6 Etant persuadé que celui qui a commencé cette bonne œuvre en vous, la perfectionnera jusqu’au jour de Jésus-Christ.

7 Et il est bien juste que j’aie ce sentiment de vous tous, car je vous ai dans mon cœur, parce que vous avez tous pris part à la grâce qui m’a été donnée dans mes liens, et dans la défense et la confirmation de l’évangile.

8 Aussi, Dieu m’est témoin que je vous chéris tous d’une affection cordiale en Jésus-Christ.

9 Et ce que je lui demande, c’est que votre charité augmente de plus en plus avec la connaissance et toute sorte d’intelligence;

10 Pour bien discerner la différence des choses, afin que vous soyez purs, et que vous marchiez sans broncher, jusqu’au jour de Jésus-Christ;

11 Etant remplis par Jésus-Christ des fruits de la justice, qui servent à la gloire et à la louange de Dieu.

12 Or, mes frères, je souhaite que vous sachiez que ce qui m’est arrivé, a même contribué aux progrès de l’évangile;

13 En sorte que les liens que je porte à cause de Jésus-Christ, ont été rendus célèbres dans tout le prétoire, et partout ailleurs;

14 Et que plusieurs de nos frères en notre Seigneur, étant encouragés par mes liens, osent annoncer la parole plus hardiment et sans crainte.

15 Il est vrai que quelques-uns annoncent Christ par envie et dans un esprit de contention; et d’autres le font avec une intention sincère.

16 Les uns annoncent Christ dans un esprit de contention, non pas purement, croyant ajouter un surcroît d’affliction à mes liens;

17 Mais les autres le font par affection, sachant que je suis établi pour la défense de l’évangile.

18 Mais quoi? de quelque manière que ce soit, soit par un zèle apparent, soit avec sincérité, Christ est toujours annoncé; c’est de quoi je me réjouis, et je m’en réjouirai toujours.

19 Car je sais que cela tournera à mon salut par vos prières et par le secours de l’Esprit de Jésus-Christ,

20 Selon ma ferme attente et l’espérance que j’ai, de ne recevoir aucune confusion en rien, mais que parlant avec hardiesse, Christ, qui a toujours été glorifié dans mon corps, le sera encore à présent, soit par ma vie, soit par ma mort.

21 Car Christ est ma vie, et la mort m’est un gain.

22 Or, s’il m’est avantageux de vivre dans ce corps, et ce que je dois souhaiter, c’est ce que je ne sais pas.

23 Car je suis pressé des deux côtés, mon désir étant de partir de ce monde et d’être avec Christ, ce qui me serait beaucoup meilleur;

24 Mais il est plus nécessaire pour vous que je demeure dans ce corps.

25 Et je suis aussi persuadé que j’y demeurerai, et même que je demeurerai quelque temps avec vous, pour votre avancement la foi, et pour votre joie;

26 Afin que vous ayez en moi un sujet de vous glorifier de plus en plus en Jésus-Christ, lorsque je serai de retour auprès de vous.

27 Conduisez-vous seulement d’une manière digne de l’évangile de Christ, afin que, soit que je vienne vous voir, soit que je sois absent, j’entende toujours dire de vous, que vous persistez à combattre pour la foi de l’évangile, avec un même esprit et un même courage, sans être intimidés en aucune manière par vos adversaires;

28 Ce qui est pour eux une preuve de leur perdition, mais pour vous une preuve de votre salut, et cela de la part de Dieu;

29 Parce qu’il vous a fait la grâce, par rapport à Jésus-Christ, non-seulement de croire en lui, mais encore de souffrir pour lui,

30 En soutenant le même combat où vous m’avez vu et où vous apprenez que je suis encore.
