Hebrews 4

1 Let us fear therefore, lest haply, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed we have had good tidings preached unto us, even as also they: but the word of hearing did not profit them, because it was not united by faith with them that heard. 3 For we who have believed do enter into that rest; even as he hath said,

As I sware in my wrath,

They shall not enter into my rest:

although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For he hath said somewhere of the seventh day on this wise, And God rested on the seventh day from all his works; 5 and in this place again,

They shall not enter into my rest.

6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some should enter thereinto, and they to whom the good tidings were before preached failed to enter in because of disobedience, 7 he again defineth a certain day, To-day, saying in David so long a time afterward (even as hath been said before),

To-day if ye shall hear his voice,

Harden not your hearts.

8 For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day. 9 There remaineth therefore a sabbath rest for the people of God. 10 For he that is entered into his rest hath himself also rested from his works, as God did from his. 11 Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, that no man fall after the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

14 Having then a great high priest, who hath passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but one that hath been in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace to help us in time of need.

1 Craignons donc que quelqu’un d’entre vous, venant à négliger la promesse d’entrer dans son repos, ne s’en trouve exclu.

2 Car elle nous a été annoncée aussi bien qu’à eux; mais cette parole ne leur servit de rien, parce que ceux qui l’ouïrent, n’y ajoutèrent point de foi.

3 Pour nous qui avons cru, nous entrerons dans le repos, suivant ce qu’il a dit: C’est pourquoi j’ai juré dans ma colère: Si jamais ils entrent dans mon repos; et cela après avoir achevé l’ouvrage de la création du monde.

4 Car l’Ecriture parle ainsi en quelque endroit, touchant le septième jour: Dieu se reposa le septième jour, après avoir achevé tous ses ouvrages.

5 Et encore dans cet autre endroit: S’ils entrent dans mon repos.

6 Puis donc que quelques-uns doivent y entrer, et que ceux à qui il avait été premièrement annoncé, n’y entrèrent pas, à cause de leur incrédulité;

7 Il détermine de nouveau un certain jour, par ce mot: Aujourd’hui, disant par David, si longtemps après, comme il a été dit ci-devant: Aujourd’hui, si vous entendez sa voix, n’endurcissez point vos cœurs.

8 Car si Josué les eût introduits dans le repos, Dieu ne parlerait pas après cela d’un autre jour.

9 Il reste donc encore un repos pour le peuple de Dieu.

10 Car celui qui est entré dans son repos, se repose après ses œuvres, comme Dieu se reposa après avoir achevé les siennes.

11 Efforçons-nous donc d’entrer dans ce repos, de peur que quelqu’un de nous ne tombe dans une semblable rébellion.

12 Car la parole de Dieu est vivante et efficace, et plus pénétrante qu’aucune épée à deux tranchants; elle atteint jusqu’au fond de l’âme et de l’esprit, des jointures et des mœlles, et elle juge des pensées et des intentions du cœur;

13 Et il n’y a aucune créature qui soit cachée devant lui, mais toutes choses sont nues et entièrement découvertes aux yeux de celui auquel nous devons rendre compte.

14 Puis donc que nous avons un grand et souverain Sacrificateur, Jésus, le Fils de Dieu, qui est entré dans les cieux, demeurons fermes dans notre profession.

15 Car nous n’avons pas un souverain Sacrificateur qui ne puisse compatir à nos infirmités, puisqu il a été tenté de même que nous en toutes choses, si l’on en excepte le péché.

16 Allons donc avec confiance au trône de grâce, afin d’obtenir miséricorde et de trouver grâce, pour être secourus dans le temps convenable.
